love the ornament explanation, didn't know I could do that! :D sounds so exotic to my american ears
I love your teaching style!
lovely, thank you for sharing what you know and honoring the traditions.
thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! i'm so excited to sing in this style!!
Thank you for doing this! Wish I could attend the livestream. Unfortunately will be out of town for Thanksgiving, and I don't think my in laws want to hear my singing 😂 I will definitely be watching the recording though!
Thanks for the video! Learning about balkan singing for my own passion.
What you said about the vulnerability of breathing in singing really hit home to me. My mom died of a cancer-related pulmonary embolism, and her last words were "I can't breathe." Shortly after this, I was diagnosed with MS, and ever since I've had episodes where I feel like I can't breathe. Singing sometimes allows me to forget this, but other times, I panic and start to feel like I've lost control of my ability to breathe. It's oddly comforting to know this is a common human experience.
I've been following this series and having a blast. Thank you so much for these resources! Only issue I've had pop up is after a few days of singing in this style, I've developed a sinus headache when bending over, and I'm pretty sure it's from all that vibration going on in the sinuses inflaming them because I'm not having any issues with congestion. Can anyone tell me if that's normal and if it's something the body will adapt to or possibly something to be concerned about?
Lovely
Beautiful. Thanks for posting, Michele. I used to dance this.
what a beautiful song, than you very much. I would love to know what the lyrics mean.
So glad you like it! here's the translation: Radka was left widowed at seventeen. She knotted a black scarf under her fair face and grieved for her true love. Mother said to Radka: “Hush, Radka, don't cry. You’re still young and beautiful. You’ll find someone else to love.” Radka said to her mother, “Hush, Mother, don’t say such things. There’s no one like my true love, neither in Turkey or beyond, nor in all of Macedonia.”
Wonderful!!!
That's one of the best warm ups on youtube ❤
body, mind, spirit, Soul
Very Lovely. Thank for posting.
Thanks for listening!
Lovely. Thanks
thank you!
Thanks for posting!
thanks for listening!!! (and doing the board...)
This song brings back great memories, very nice!
hey juan how sweet! hope you are well!
really enjoying this content... I want to learn the song properly but struggling to find the word? Michele could you add the words in the caption or even in a comment?
Hi Isabel - thanks for the suggestion! The lyrics are now in the video description. Enjoy!
your lessons are amazing❤
Thank you for this wonderful lesson! :- ) And I really like your end quote, it's a good mantra
you are so welcome!!!!
I'm a Bulgarian. Oddly enough, we don't learn this at school and I happened to live in an age, where my grandparents were too much looking to the future, in order to transmit what was in the past. I have had some musical training in my youth, but I've never been able to sing a folk song properly. I'm pondering going to lessons, but since I'm with a small child, I can't do it now. So these lessons are my greatest joy now! Thank you for making these and being so interested in our culture! 🥰
thanks for this sweet message! I have gotten so much from Bulgarians and Bulgarian culture, so it feels good to be able to repay just a little bit...I'm glad you're singing - keep it up!
@@michelesimonsimplyvoice The pleasure's mine! I went through lesson 2 and you can't believe my amazement, when I managed to sing it like it should be sung. I was in tears, I kid you not! Your explanations are perfect, so easy to follow and they give me answers to questions I've had for years. I will be forever thankful! This is the beauty of the transmission of cultural heritage - it can transcend time, space, land, nationalities - it only needs to be from the heart! ♥ Thank you!
❤❤❤❤❤ thank you, you are amazing
Lovely! Thank yOu!
How beautiful! Are you still singing together? I would LOVE to join!
thanks so much for this! sorry you can’t make it
I wish I could go, but alas I cannot. Michele is a wonderful teacher and every time she is in the Kitka lineup I am thrilled. Also, this camp which started out as a CCC built camp in the 1930's is beautiful. I spent many summers in the farthest camp in which in those days was YWCA camp Timbertall. The camps are deep in the Redwood Forest by a river. You won't be sorry if you go.
This is wonderful. I've used it for my UCLA class. Thank you so much!
you’re very welcome! what class?
FANTASTIC!!! BRAVO!!!
This was amazing, I can't wait to do the rest! Thank you so much!
Thank you for this! I’ve been searching for Bulgarian vocal ressources because the layers of harmonies have really interested me and there’s little information :)
Thank you!!😍🌹🙏 Especially in this Covid Times was Hard to meet People/Teachers needed some work like this before my first Recital after 2Years!!!I will be singing a Bulgarian Song as well
This is gorgeous. Is it Macedonian?
it is!!
So beautiful. I'm going to sing with you next time as I have this song in my Kitka song folder. Can anyone recommend how to get people to synchronize? I teach a simple class one evening a week on Zoom, but we can't sing together as it doesn't synch. I'd love to be able to have us be able to hear and sing w/each other as our group has been going since 1974.
Can you give the name of the songs you use? You are a great teacher, Michele. Because of time constraints I can only do about 5 minutes at a time. But you are so clear and you repeat, so I get what I can. Thanks.
hi Sandra - I use many different songs; the song in this class is Ajde Red Se Redat
Great, Michele. Glad to know that Stockton Folkdance Camp is still going. I had a scholarship to attend back in the 1960's. Passed out from the heat and we all stayed up till 3AM dancing. When I came home I felt like I could fly; I could elevate so much farther than when I arrived. Great experience. We also sang every day. Aloha from Sandi in Oakland 2022.
Michele Simon is a marvelous singer with Kitka for years. anything she teaches is well worth learning.
ah shucks! so sweet!
Oh, how wonderful. Thank you all.
Wow! Respect.
thank you!!!
Благодаря ви много.
my pleasure!
I love learning this because I love to do a cover versions of pop songs that will incorporate this vocal style. Glad to learn a lot from you.. thank you.
Oh my gosh, your lesson is so enjoyable and helpful, and the comments so nice, I wish we could all gather for some tea and chat and sing :)
woudn't that be nice.....I wish!
Yes me too
OMG Michele, I am looking for such a long time to learn singing Bulgarian music, which I adore🥰. THANX for this marvelous session. i am singing for more than 40 years, but this was so good to reach this forward area sound room. and because I am used to learn mainly by listening, brilliant!!🙏
so glad it's useful!
When I was a in high school in Serbia our music teacher was teaching us these techniques when we were learning our ethnic singing. Etncis singing used to be performed by women in village's when they gathered for some socialising. Usually they would tread the wool or do some needle work or knitting. All Slavic countries use this type of signing.
yes - this type of sound can be found throughout the Balkans and Eastern Europe, sung by women sewing, also working in the fields...
June 2021 and practising along with you, thanks so much
Really fun!!
Lovely lesson, thank you! Greetings from Romania 🤗
you are most welcome!
This was an incredible lesson!
Thanks! your fans are also looking for Zabava Kolo Festival set 1
it's on the California Kolo Festival You Tube Channel, but I'm going to be putting both sets on this site - thanks Susan!!!
Thank you very much for your lessons! I watched all the videos. This is very valuable information and you explain it very well. I sing Russian and Balkan folk songs and teach traditional singing. Your workshops were very helpful, thank you!
