Bee Talks with Bill Hesbach - April 2023
On HiveHugger - there was a misunderstanding about the product. The main part of the HiveHugger insulation isn't the R7 side insulation. It is their R32 top insulation block. Peg Desanto is a proponent of condensing hives and that is really what HiveHugger is going for.
Also, you can find her and HiveHugger instructions in a few UA-cam videos.
Government over reach. Incompetent
Good to see you take the necessary protection. Oxalic acid can do serious harm to your lungs.
Is there any plans to provide in smaller packs?
Rumor has it they are being asked for smaller packaging.
Hi Bill, thanks. But now that you opened the package and didn't use all the strips the shelf life must be pretty short? I am guessing you can't save them for the next season. Seems like it might be expensive to use unless you have a matching number of hives/population to the package.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes, but Vita is saying you can put them in a sealed ziplock and they would be fine to save. Not sure why the label is so restrictive on reuse. I'm told it was licensed as a commercial product.
Hello Bill, first of all thanks for the invaluable information you provide to the beekeeping community. Product question - what date did you install the treatment? Instructions are 42-56 days then remove. From today that would take you into November. Is it safe to over-winter bees with this product installed - Darren
Hi Darren, I'm not sure why the day limit is a label requirement. I’ve overwinterd a similar product with no problem. But I’ll try to remove them as instructed. Some colonies will chew them in half and they then fall out to land on bottom board. In my case, they reacted with my galvanize screens and did some damage. I noticed it happening with evidence under one open screen

Wow! Thank you for this! may i ask how many hives you have?
Very informative! Thanks Bill 👍
Thanks for watching.
Nice video Bill , thanks 👍
Looks like you got nailed at 20:47. Perhaps the ladies were feeling a little squished - side to side there definitely wasn't enough room.)
Thanks for watching. I’m always getting hit.
All our goldenrod produces great nectar hear we Have a tall and a short I can get a few Supers of just goldenrod we have such a great flow in Nova Scotia it starts in may and don’t stop until mid September it’s full out
Lucky you. This year we were slow to build but now I'm noticing a stronger flow. Our fields have a variety of species that bloom until frost.
Golden rod is hot right now and asters we have the best fall flow in a long times
It’s about time OA Has been allowed in Canada for a long time but its so stupid that you guys can use things that we can’t and vice versa
You're missing the entire point. They're trying to get into the 2028 Olympics in the new category called, "Team Work."
I HAVE LEFTOVER QUEENS I 2 FRAME BOXES, HOW DO I OVER WINTER THEM? NUC THEM ?
Nice refractometer😂 I have the same model of extractor. Thanks for sharing.
What’s The dimensions of the box
Incredible
Самое умное насекомое на планете
Poor girl.
In July, Mountain mints (Pycnanthemum spp.) and Milkweeds (Asclepias spp.) are also attracting honeybees at my CT property.
Thought top bar beekeeping is for the tropical countries only!
Good
grateful for your video
Beautiful bee yard❤ from Meriden CT
Good information. Regarding the Chronic Bee Paralysis virus, i noticed it in a colony with a historically high mite load. I was surprised you didn't advise to check and possibly treat for varroa. Ive also heard requeening can help.
Thanks for your comments. Paralysis virus can occur without high varroa. We know very little about the pathology The colony was already treated I see single bees it in every colony
Great talk! Interesting practical and timely. Thank you Bill.
And the bee came back after the very next shake!
They can’t sting but can pinch the absolute shit out of u
We’ve had carpenter bees for years and they are harmless to people. They have a tendency to fly right up to our faces, we usually just stop and say hi.
He was simply licking the salt from your skin. They usually get the salt they need from natural sources, but if they find a source close, they will use it. Wasps, honey bees, and sometimes smaller species of hornets will do the same. As long as you don't swat at them, they are perfectly harmless. ❤
while salt is abundant in certain natural formations, its accessibility in the environment can be limited, leading animals, including insects like butterflies, to seek alternative sources like tears, sweat, and puddles to meet their nutritional needs.
Hands of a 70 yr old. Impressive you’re using UA-cam.
Carpenter bees are absolutely adorable
I bet he likes your salt haha
Probably after salt - unless there was some other interesting smell on your hand - any other guesses?
Im guessing it wanted salt
I agree.
Just let him bee 😂
I want to experience that 😭
That bee was trying to mate with your hand 🤣
I've done that a few times but then they get in on my porch with a screened in and I'll catch them and let them go outside
Probably a male.
=) amazing
Cute!!
Curious why you would use more than 1 Bee Escape
A guy told me having one on the top and one on the bottom helps them exit faster. He uses them in his yard and essentially makes a stack of honey supers from different hives up to four high with on bee escape on the bottom and one on top. He says if you only use one doing it his way the bees from the different colonies will fight eachother
@@TheFarminMusician why wouldn't they still fight each other?
@@mbagdescanning I don't know he's old and experienced. Main supplier of bees and equipment for a bunch of counties. His didn't work at all regardless won't be using them again. Checked in them after one hour. The spaces of the triangles were too large and didn't stop the bees at all.
Thanks Bill!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching and, if you want, share it on other social media.
Bees are so incredible
Thanks for watching!
Fascinating❤
Thanks for watching. Hopefully we can continue to make many more.
Beautiful swarm!
Thanks for watching. It was fun to hive that swarm.
Awesome
Thanks, swarm season is a lot of work and these moments bring pleasure and wonder.
thanks, very interesting!
looking forward to bee keeping
