Horton Plains National Park is a beautiful and ecologically rich plateau located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, near Nuwara Eliya. Situated at an elevation of about 2,100-2,300 meters (6,900-7,500 feet), it is one of the country's most important national parks, known for its stunning landscapes, unique biodiversity, and cool, misty climate.
Breathtaking Scenery:
The park is renowned for its rolling grasslands, cloud forests, crystal-clear streams, and waterfalls. It offers a mesmerizing view of Sri Lanka's unique highland landscapes. The lush greenery, coupled with mist-covered forests and expansive plains, make it a haven for nature lovers.
World’s End:
One of the most famous features of Horton Plains is the World's End, a sheer cliff that drops about 870 meters (2,854 feet) and offers a breathtaking view of the lowlands below. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the southern coast of Sri Lanka. However, during the morning mist, the cliff appears as if it’s disappearing into the clouds.
Baker’s Falls:
Another popular attraction within the park is Baker's Falls, a scenic waterfall named after British explorer Sir Samuel Baker. The falls are surrounded by thick forest and beautiful wildflowers, providing an enchanting spot for photography and relaxation.
Biodiversity:
Horton Plains is known for its rich biodiversity, featuring a variety of endemic flora and fauna. The park is home to sambar deer, leopards, purple-faced langurs, and many species of birds, butterflies, and reptiles. Several plants and animals found here are unique to the region and are specially adapted to the cool, damp climate.
Flora:
The park has a unique mix of montane grasslands and cloud forests, where a variety of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants thrive. Species like Rhododendrons, Dendrobiums, and various mosses and lichens add color and texture to the landscape.

Horton Plains is a paradise for bird watchers. The park is home to many endemic and migratory bird species, including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, Sri Lanka white-eye, and Sri Lanka bush warbler. Bird enthusiasts visit Horton Plains to spot rare and beautiful species in their natural habitat.
