I joined to protect family and country, so joined 82, Special Forces, MAC SOG, and CIA MAC, PHOENIX, Was proud until I came home I cannot forgive how we were treated and how the VA was shitty with no help. I'm still angry, hard to talk hard to forgive, hard to associate.

I also served in Vietnam, 1st Cav Div. Tay Ninh, 69 & 70. I came home in Aug. of 1970 and I first learned why I was the way I am in 2003. I got into the mental health part of the VA and I'm glad that I did. I have been going to war trauma group sessions for 20 years and it has helped me tremendously. I am so glad to see that you made it home, welcome home brother.

I can't explain why but seeing my fellow Vietnam vets as old graybeards like myself seems weird. In my mind's eye I see post war Vietnam vets as a scruffy longhair 20 something dressed is his old army fatigue jacket/shirt which was a common sight for several years.

My father was only kid from his block that got sent to Vietnam and come back alive... He lost 4 friends he grew up with (including Charles Buckey Mason one of his best friends who was killed days before getting sent home) and he was never able to drink that pain away. He only told me a few stories, the night he was getting flow in for his deployment the Tet offensive began, as he was landing a ammo dump got blown up... He said, "They've been us we were winning, this doesn't look like winning!"

It's like you were on my team Tom ... I'm 75 and still have the nightmares, I figured that they were just part of being a Sniper and combat solder, the VA Rep said we spent just over 330 days in the Jungle Top told me at a medal ceremony where I got my Bronze Star and a "Brave Eagle" award that with 25 cents and those medals I could get a cup of coffee in the "world" ... he was just joking, but after I got home I realized he was spot on. We were even ordered not to wear our dress uniforms off base as it might upset the locals? Thanks for telling your story ... Ken; 2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne ... Agent orange has taken all my VN Veteran friends, I hope you got lucky .... by the way there is no cure for PTSD. The VA rep told me that they tested 71 mood stabilizers and non work permanently ... Also both my parents were orphans, and like you I made a commitment I wouldn't be like my dad with my 3 sons. I paint (I have a degree as a teacher in fine arts) and paint the story of war. I haven't seen my sons in a few years, I never raised a hand to them and never told them what I did over there. I have tried to bury it, without any luck. I miss those boys and because of Agent Orange and birth defects ... I have no grand children. When ever they asked me for money or help, I ALWAYS gave it to them. They blame me for the birth defects issues and my wife left me 43 years ago. The worst is these holidays, again I spent it alone with my pets and my art studio. Sadly i can no longer walk without a wheeled walker. I hope all this ends soon.

I’m 70 years old. I never served, even though I had always dreamed of being a Paratrooper like my Dad had been. My older brother had joined in 69, and had gone to Vietnam in70. When he came home he told me to forget about that foolish dream. It wasn’t what I’d been programmed to believe. His exact words, as he pinned me to the wall and said ( nose to nose), “David, this ain’t no goddam John Wayne movie!” That was a real turning point in my life. I realize now, the depth of his PTSD. He too had experienced the awful and fruitless sacrifices that this man relates. I loved my Brother. Much respect to this man for stating the futility of war. ✌️
