Shafer's Stove Shop General 2024 "Revised Brightened Video"
I remember going through this as a kid in fortuna. I've been working in ferndale for the last 17 years at the Vi.
I was stationed at the Naval Facility Centerville Beach at the time of these 3 major earthquakes. The quake caused considerable damage to the barracks. A semi tanker full of fuel collapsed and ended up leaking fuel everywhere. The MWR club was destroyed inside with nearly every piece of dishware and glassware shaken off the counters and raw food everywhere. The gov't house I lived in had the LR floor sunk in about 8 inches from these earthquakes. These earthquakes caused the base to be shut down from the damage and it never re-opened. These 3 earthquakes that day/night were way worse than the 7.7 quake that happened when I was stationed in Adak, AK. Ferndale is such a neat town.
I LOVE this place. The people are good people and theres always something to do even if youre not playing poker. Friday night Karaoke is fun!
The best casino in California
I can't wait to visit 🥰
Lets GET IT!
I was abalone diving in Shelter Cove during the quake.
Cheapest house in Ferndale is 849,000 now.
Not True. Many houses listed for less than what you say.
I was there, terrifying! The sound of Valley Grocery going down was like a bomb landing. Huge windows burst out to the sidewalks, a miracle nobody was seriously injured
Avoid the Evil Empire (Providence). MRCH is your on and only true community hospital!
3 quakes in about 18 hours was insane! Then there were huge floods in ‘94.
Thank you for this nice video. Well put together. Just a couple months after your earthquake, we in the Morongo Basin were awakened by a Magnitude 7.3 earthquake which was followed a couple hours later by a 6.4 earthquake in the mountains. While Yucca Valley/Landers might have little in common, one thing we do share is community spirit. We are isolated in the desert. Los Angeles is about a 2 hour drive from us but it might as well be a million miles away. They couldn’t care less what happens to us out here so long as it doesn’t affect them. Within minutes of the first quake here, neighbors were rolling up their sleeves eager to help those who lost everything. It was hard to tell who was a fireman and who wasn’t since people were grabbing hoses and water to battle the several homes that caught fire. That evening, no less than 20 people brought barbecues to the park, others brought meat to feed anyone that showed up. That actually went on for several days. People don’t get it. Everyone is so worried about the big one from San Andreas. Its the small localized earthquakes that test people’s resolve- Ferndale, Morgan Hill, Coalinga, Yucca Valley, Ridgecrest, and others. We are all the real experts
I was stationed at the navy base up on the cliff outside town when this hit. Some of the cliff fell away and some buildings were damaged.
I was living near Hydesville at that time. My brother lived in Ferndale. Ferndale was the hardest hit from this quake. By the way. The music added to this video was kind of sucky. Just sayin. Thanks for making this video. I enjoyed remembering the time and recognizing some people.
Not a single cellphone anywhere to be seen! How I envy such simpler times.
Oh my gawd she's so fake!
Well we know this certainly wasn't an Intelligence Convention going on here.
Thank you for that story, Mr. Rigby. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to know you!!
PS: "Don't give up without a fight".
I am 61 years old, I contracted polio on my right leg when I was 10 months old (actually I contracted polio on both legs, but it developed just on the right leg), when young and as a teenager, it never stopped me from doing any physical activity, I did play football, baseball, riding bicycle, long walking and some swimming without any problem, I used to walk very long distances with two of my excellent friends (one died more than 34 years ago and the other one just lost contact with me), in my young age I also practice Taekwondo (ITF style), and I participated in full combat when there were competitions in the Taekwondo clubs, I couldn't kick with my righ leg, but I developed strong kick with my left one as the right leg could support my body wheigt in those days; I work different jobs, but from last 6 years I started feeling so much pain in my right leg, I had lots of falls (in one fall, I broke and dislocated my right shoulder), I split open my chin in anoother fall, crack my right elbow twice and a lot of head concussions in other times; now I have to use a walking stick to walk, I constanly have pain in my right leg (especially in the joins, knee, foot). the little strengh I had in my right leg is gone, and I hardly can sometimes walk 15 mts as the pain forces me to stop and sit down, I had to stop working as a site cleaning manager (I kept that position for 25 years, as it involved a lot of walking in the building where I was posted, but due to the long daily working hours (12 per day) and often the weekends as well, my leg didn't support my body weight anymore and the pain when walking all those hours was too much; now I must take pain killers all time and use those "pain relief gels" to help me to cope with the day; post-polio syndrome just had such impact in my life that my activities, that most of them, I had to stop them and limit myself to few exercises per day as too much movement, brings me more pain and a constant feeling of tiredness and exhaustion.
Thank you so much for sharing your story.
That part of California has a lot of sizable big earthquakes because of the Mendocino Triple Junction that's the because of the The Pacific, North American and Gorda plates (a subplate of The Juan Da Fuca plate). Ferndale, Eureka and the other cities affected by earthquakes can't get a break from them.
Hey center arts I love to subscribe to your program on my new device. Thank you I love the last summer outdoor shows awesome
I remember the '94 Northridge earthquake woke me up from my sleep.
from 1 to 10 how scared were you ?
13:22 on... really big community vibes and total characters, the cops are movie characters. And the Jim Morrison guy.
Such a snapshot as well... Hate that there was loss of homes and everything. But the gum-chewing cop and old school way of life was still there. Cool!! Hippie dippy mixed with town folk, so dang cool to see this era in raw form. Same went fo Loma Prieta and the Bay.
This is delightful!
Clever video from a terrific organization!
Can disability people use a lyft app for transportation to go to the shelter about adult abuse when people call 211,I'm living with disability.
This looks like the oldest, Whitest town outside of McClanleyville. My impressions of visiting Ferndale as a college student: frowns from the old folks. A 'get out of my town' vibe. Unless you have tourist money to spend, then its all smiles.
Ferndale has some of the kindest, wholesome, people on this planet. Your hate for the white race is sad. I hope one day you can leave this hate behind you and live in peace.
@gandorfstar5038 You are RIGHT about this town. Watching this, it's hard to believe this is in California, and not in Arkansas or Kentucky.
I’ve lived across the bridge in scotia &/or fortuna my whole life. & altho I have clients in Ferndale & some of my best friends live in Ferndale u r unfortunately VERY correct! Altho it’s not necessarily a race thing (tho for some it’s still a somewhat accurate description) but they definitely don’t take kindly to outsiders, no matter what race u r
It shook the heck out of us all the way up in Arcata. I was only eleven at the time. I loved seeing the fella who owned the blacksmith shop in this video. As a kid, one of my favorite things in the world was visiting his shop. He made blacksmith puzzles, you know horse shoes with chains connecting them and you tried to get the ring off. He made an assortment of more fancy ones as well. There was also another fella who had a shop with extravagant mini roller coasters that marble sized metal balls would roll through. I got to visit Hobarts sculpture shop and see all the half dressed monsters :)
Stan Bennett made the roller coaster maze creations with the rolling balls
😅😄😂
I didn't know this film existed! What a rough 24 hours! We lived in a duplex in Eureka. Coast Guard rescue swimmer and wife lived next door. When the quake hit at midnight, they both came over to our place -- too scared to go back to theirs! Then the 4am quake hit. We all wondered if this would ever stop! Was great seeing so many recognizable faces in this film. I didn't know Hobart wasn't in town! For months after these quakes, every time a vehicle would hit a pot hole in front of our house, our hearts fluttered .. Wondering if this is another quake. Quakes suck.
Great job, Ross and Peter!
Yay
Been to Ferndale a couple of times. Really magnificent small town Americana. That entire Eel River Flood Plain is so beautiful.
Wow
I want the 1990s back . 2010+ sucks
Very nice job! You have a great voice and it fits perfectly. Bravo.
And if Calfornia has an earthquake now there will be no help. From government
@michaelharris8421 Both California and Federal governments always help after Earthquakes. Trying reading some news sites once in a while.
@CoopyKat, The federal government is great after a disaster. Just ask the folks that survived hurricane Katrina.
You do great work!

Cool video 👏
Nice 2 C U getting face time on the news; enjoying these field interviews✌
I was thrown 10 feet horizontally out of my shower, living in Ferndale in the1992 earthquake.
I remember this 1992 I lived in Trinidad California thank you for posting
A wonderful artist. BTW, it’s spelled Harden.
The 6.4 that just hit Ferndale brought me here.
