I am not entirely sure why they thought that. Maybe the thought of Jesus needing his diaper changed was too much for the church to accept at the time. Apparently, most babies were eventually drawn like little adults to pay tribute to the adult baby Jesus concept that was popular at the time. I am sure I am missing some details, but basically it had to do with the religious beliefs of their time.

They absolutely deserved to be bullied for this, mainly because basically at the bottom of their hearts they wanted everyone except them to burn in hell for not sharing their beliefs. But also from a religious perspective, they all gave in to sin as soon as they thought the world was going to end. They should have sticked to a God's will lifestyle to the very ends even if they knew when the end was gonna be. So even by their own standards they should be shamed for their actions.

Yes the uk has less murders than a single american city. This is why british cops dont carry guns. Theres also less than 30 deaths per year due to guns in the uk.
