By doing the "sink test" (seed sinks in water) the seed is said to be viable. Does this also mean that the dormancy has been broken and the seed will germinate given the right conditions? I'm trying to work out if I need to stratify my spruce seeds, even if they have sunk in water. I'm also just interested to know if there are any rules that can be applied to determine if the seed dormancy has been broken? e.g. seeds swell/sink when put in water, thanks.

I have done research on this topic during my PhD in wheat. The mother plants tolerated heat stress during germination and early seedling growth and their seeds showed better tolerance when planted in field. The plants were strong and showed better and uniform germination

Phenotypic plasticity of seeds is a very true phenomena. And seeds could be an excellent source to fight the climate change.
