Thank you, my mom passed 20 years ago but her birthday is May 1 and my Sister and I are the only 2 left in our family of 6 and she always writes a nice tribute to each one on their birthday. We have a brother who would have celebrated a birthday on April 30 and Mom May 1 so I asked her to put this in her annual tribute to our mom. I really appreciate your kind thoughts and I am sorry for your loss as well! 👍👍
I joined the Air Force on May 19, 1960 and went to Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas. Tommy Sands also joined a week after me and while I was at the "Green Monster", also known as the processing center, filling out papers for my Top Secret clearance the Sgt. In charge asked if we wanted to see Tommy Sands get his hair cut. So just outside the room we were in was a door with a window in it to the barbershop. Sitting directly in front of us was Tommy Sands and we observered him get his full haircut in front of the media. After we finished our task a fellow airman who was in my unit and I went to the outside soda machine to grab a drink before returning to our unit. There were a lot of brass all around us and civilian women who worked in the center. We realized that the unit gathering outside was Tommy Sands unit who just went through quarter master which is where you get your uniforms and other gear. They were still in civilian clothing and a Colonel walked over to Tommy Sands and picked up his duffle bag and brought him over to the ladies who were anxious to meet him. A few minutes later the Colonel apparently gave Sands permission to go get a soda. He approached 3 of us standing there and said hi to us and we had small talk for a few minutes before he returned to the Colonel. My next assignment was at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, Ms. and I had mentioned the Sands incident to some of my fellow airmen. One night one of these men came into my room with a magazine and said "hey, this is you and Tommy Sands at the soda machine. It sure was! Unfortunately I never got the picture from that magazine.
