Improvisation is being able to sit down at the piano and create a melody that sounds like a real song......and be creative. This is easy to do with a few simply steps. Also, learn about the C major scale and its relative minor, A minor. Knowing these scales can help create different kinds of melodies that sound either happy, calm, peaceful, scary, sad or joyful.

This student is learning about what steps and skips on the piano look like, and how to recognize if they go up towards the top of the piano (right) or down towards the bottom of the piano (left). We use a game called "Hill Hike" through "Vibrant Music Teaching."

This student has never been in a recital playing alone before. In preparation, we talk about how to sit at the piano and how to work on memorizing her piece. Memorization does not mean just playing over and over again all the way through. Breaking it into chunks will help....and Penelope Penguin helps too!

Going through a brand new piece can be hard- but it is made easier with focussing on patterns in the left hand. This student struggled with knowing where, when and how her hand should move in the left hand. Check out how much easier it is for her at the end when she was focussed on the patterns instead of picking and choosing each individual note.

This student is new to piano but still was able to play an awesome duet with me in a new key- the key of G. He also learns the G scale- his first scale ever!
