Fixing the Gearmatic 19 winch
There are a lot of these gearmatic winches out there these days. They don’t make them anymore but we still supply about 80% of the parts for them. The Gearmatic 19, 119, 28, and 36 all operated very similarly.

STOP “Before” your winch breaks

Winches on CAT, DEERE, Komatsu, and any other dozer are rated for maximum line pull. They do not have redundancy ratings like many crane, hoist, or marine winches. Having a sensor to tell you when you are getting close to that maximum load is key, especially on PTO winches.

A quick crash course on the H110 rebuild keys. This is a great winch for the Deere 850’s, CAT D7R’s, and some CAT D8’s. Caterpillar winch rebuild process for model CAT 58 on D8H, D8K, 583H, or 583K. This CAT winch rebuild is similar to the other CAT winch models like the CAT 55, CAT 56, and CAT 57 for other CAT crawlers.

The Hyster W8L has been in production for decades and an excellent winch choice for all CAT D7 class tractors. First released around the era of CAT D7G, but also available for the CAT D7H, CAT D7R, CAT D8N, and CAT D8R.
Hyster Winch Accumulator updates

Old style Hyster winch accumulators didn’t last long and cause performance issues. The new style accumulator updates used in late model and new winches are fantastic. Most common in winches like the Hyster W6F and Hyster W8L along with others.
Allied W3C winch repair

AKA the Hyster W3C, is a fantastic winch but no longer in production as many small dozers no longer have a PTO shaft. These W3C models offer fantastic performance on many small dozers before the mid 2000’s. Even better than most of the current small hydraulic winches. Hard to match performance of a PTO winch for line pull and speed.

Hey my winch on my tree farmer is about the same thing iv been pulling heavy hitches lately probably more then recommended when I release the lever started getting hard to get into position to the point where are I pulled on it so hard I broke the weld at the handle base do you think my problem is in the lever mechanism or in the winch

Is it possible to rebuild this on the tractor? Remove the drum with a fork lift?
You can rebuild it on the tractor, but we do not recommend this. It's much easier to lay the winch on its side for disassembly and reassembly. If you have any questions or need assistance feel free to call us at 503-287-9000.
Why won't my brake stay engaged?? It just slips and wony hold even a log. Lots of fluids and the system is bled.

Do you know what the Gearmatic 19 is rated at? Is it 30k lbs?
Depending on what you put it on, Gearmatic 19 is rated to 20k lbs, with a torque converter it can go up to 30k lbs. If you need more info give us a call 503-287-9000
Got a new model and it won’t disengage every thing else works great any idea why?

My gearmatic on our tree farmee c4 wasn’t pulling hard so we took the cover off and adjusted the clutch bands because the were pretty loose. But now it won’t pull at all. Try to bleed the line at the slave piston while holding the line pushed in. The piston is mooving a little and you see the band squeezing again the inside drum. Also before we adjusted the band it would pull a little twitch and when it would start to pull hard you could hear a clunk and it would stop pulling.Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Just have that seal surface turned down and have it industrial chromed, surface will outlast the winch.
Good afternoon. I have a #19 on my tree farmer. I’m having problems pulling the cable out and it’s always pulling in when the control is disengaged. Any suggestions
I'm having the same trouble with my gearomatic 19 right now it's doing the same thing you're describing. What did you find out for information to fix yours?
@@josephhanscom8306 I took the cover off, drained all the fluid. It seemed pretty clean inside. I think my tolerances are off probably caused by rust. I put the fluid back in hooked her back up. She pulls way better now, but I still can’t pull the cable out so at this point, I’m just hooking the cable to a tree to get it to freespool The cable does come out a little bit easier since I changed the brake fluid and played with the master cylinder but it’s not perfect for now. I’m just leaving it because it still works.
If “cdl weight” was based off of weight of the trailer, people who drive/pull motor homes, travel trailers, or horse trailers all would need a cdl. Which obviously they don’t. You need a cdl if you are doing commercial work and unless you are only doing this on your property/getting paid to do this for people, you need a cdl.

Do you have any smart shackles in stock? Are they maranized? You're using some sort of dielectric paint to interact with the sensor nodes. Will this function and salt water application for Marine salvage work? Do you offer one in that line? I appreciate from hearing from you thank you very much.

Bad news….. those are nearly impossible to find in working condition that are complete with all the install parts. Might be one out there somewhere but we don’t have one unfortunately

How much pressure does the acumealater take
System pressure on most allied PTO winches is 220 +/-. There are several accumulator updates and there is a testing procedure we can send you. Email parts@thomsonequipment.com
System pressure is 220 psi usually but the accumulator pre charge is 120 psi. Make sure you don’t overcharge. There is also an accumulator update for most Hyster and early allied winches. The good accumulators are shaped like a softball and not the old twin torpedo design.
Were any of these 19's ever set up to use hydraulic oil and valves? I've only ever seen the brake fluid variety.
I have a gearmatic 19 that is leaking fluid very bad around 4 hex head bolts on the side. Any help would be appreciated.

Good way to get that gear with the ridge repaired would be to have a machinist spray weld and machine it.
Yes, that's part of what the video is trying to show. We wanted to show how a winch that stopped production around 40 years ago works since it's different than the competitors. Also issuing a caution that any hard part failures will probably result in significant downtime and cost as you'll likely be making parts or scrapping it as only a few of these models are not worth anything these days. We recently got a call from someone who put 15k into a cat winch only to find out the specialty pump required for install was no longer available. He had to either walk away or find a way to jerry-rig a pump from a belt drive to try and run the winch. For most of these models, it's unwise to spend anywhere close to 15k as you should have jumped ship way before 15k and changed over to a modern winch with an internal pump etc. PS - We prefer chrome/grind for light seal grooves. Huge headache

Hydraulic winches are normally cheaper to buy, and more costly to install. It really depends on the model and tractor configuration though.
