Shotguns are better at dealing with mutants, all versions of Stalker I always use a shotgun for any mutants and a sniper rifle for hostile npc.

I found an interesting guy in Zaton once. First I hear bullets from afar, a lot of bullets. Naturally, I go to see what was up and see a rusted out ship under attack by mercs; all professional and higher rank. Before any of them notice me running towards them the band of mercs rushed inside the ship in a hail of gunfire. By the time I get there they are all already dead and no one is in the ship except a single free loner stalker, crouched on the floor over one of the bodies. Scanned him to see his rank and his name is only Sparticus, the Rookie. I tried talking to him and he didn't offer any dialogue, only to say he was busy and to leave him alone. He didn't let me loot any of the bodies so I left him to his business. I've never since returned to that ship

Gets more scary when your stalker ranks is high enough where bloodsuckers, chimeras, and psuedo-giants become a common occurence in every map you travel through. Makes you feel on edge no matter where you travel.
