Mohan Gopal’s main area of work is the institutional framework for law and justice. Prof. Gopal has been working in the field of law and development for some 24 years, and has served in the World Bank in Washington DC (between 1986 and 2004) and the Asian Development Bank (1983-1986). In these organizations his responsibilities included various projects and programmes on law and development in numerous
countries. In 2003, Prof. Gopal led the development of a global strategy on legal and judicial reform at the World Bank.
Prof. Gopal headed the National Law School of India University between 2000 and 2003 (while on leave from the World Bank). Since 2006, he heads the National Judicial Academy, India. India’s ‘think tank on justice’, NJA, whose Governing Council is chaired by the Chief Justice of India, is responsible for judicial education, research and policy
development on the administration of justice in India. Prof. Gopal has developed and taught courses on law and development in Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC; and at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. Prof. Gopal has a doctorate in law (SJD) and Masters in Law (LL.M.) from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Law from Delhi University.
