    I thought the humor was funnier than most other Illumination movies. Maybe cause I like character humor and visual humor and I think the chatacters expressions and attitude had more personality than any Despicable Me character except maybe the Minions (which I sometimes really enjoy and other times I find them annoying).

    "Its one mistake". Hmm. Either the movie itself is one big mistake, or its a good movie and it has one and only one mistake that is big. Glad it was the latter. A very low-intensity mellow comedy. The description reminds me of "Sitting Ducks" which was also about ducks weirdly enough. The spiritual brother to Rock and Rule is en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Metal_(film) I'd wager the the R&R artist also did StarChaser which was another 1980s film but for the whole family. While animated movies in the US are for kids, the non-kids adult animation is booming. We have the hit Hazbin Hotel, the Fox line up, Adult Swim, South Park, Netflix, and Indie series Murder Drones and Digital Circus. Also 50% of anime.

    Two things I didn't credit - the orchestral score was really excellent. The hopping from place to place reminded me a bit of Voltaire's Candide (a very short book that I recommend to everyone) and there were a few jokes early on that did make me laugh. Especially the whole 'but that's our best bed' frying pan scene. Mostly the push pull humour that didn't work. Separately, the slightly more adult animated film I mentioned is called Rock & Rule. You can definitely tell this was made by an Englishman. The Brits should be banned from ever making anything about Napoleon again. They clearly have too much anti-French/Napoleon propaganda influencing their perspective and can't be trusted with anything about him again. It felt like a complete character assassination in film. Wasted $30 and two hours of my life on this complete pile of dog feces. Phoenix was terrible, but he seemed clueless in what he was doing. I remember reading a news article where he basically admitted he didn't know how he should be playing the character, and Scott had to work with him scene by scene and walk him through it. Kirby was better, but not by a ton. She wasn't bad at least. At the end of the day, the blame is fully on Ridley Scott for this complete debacle.

    • @masseysmoviemadness1411

    As I said before to other people, this movie shows more the vision of history the american mediocre middle class see history and European countries. A sort of fast food consumption of history, where everything is only surface level and characters are derived from a sort of fashionable cool trend of the moment. The depressed wrinkled Berlusconian Napoleon, who falls for the young virgin Queen. This film even shows the misoginy of Scott, who can't even accept to portray an old woman marrying a young men (Napoleon was younger than Josephine). Ridley Scott was never interested in portrying history and he even told us very clearly....

    Josephine by the time she met Napoleon was already a widow and tried to get her status up the society mainly through wh*ring around and this is pretty well documented! I won't argue whether or not she had some feelings or passion for Napoleon but i seriously doubt it as he was after all a perfect trampoline for her and she continued her way even after they got married! So don't be too quick to judge. Phoenix in my opinion was totally lost and just sleep walked through at least the first one hour of the movie. And by far he was one of the worst cast for this part as it brought even more melancholy to his character and more historic bs with him looking like a dad to Kirby even in early years while in fact Josephine was 6 years older. And it was him actually that did not change facial expression between crowning himself an emperor or conducting a battle. Anyway this movie is a total crap for so many reasons: castrating Napoleon making him look like a total loser who would simply bomb the pyramids to deal with his complexes after which would crawl back to his cheating wife...that's pure bs on so many levels. Not to mention the scene when he is back from exile that actually inflicts the idea that the french are a bunch of melancholy cry babies who would follow someone no by the measure of his skills, charm and leadership but because he's the most depressed guy in the whole world

    I am French, born and raised in Paris, and if you tell me this was supposed to be Napoleon, it feels to me like an English caricature puppet marinated in an English mild sauce. This Phoenix actor was wrong for the part, he had no passion, no charm. You can tell this was made by an Englishman, it was pure anti-French propaganda, pure junk. You gave a realistic review I think. The English actress, Barbie-Josephine, was pretty, like an icy English rose, but not as a warm blooded French temptress, and Josephine was born in Martinique on top of that - there is no chemistry between this actress and Napoleon, nothing. It’s hard to get into the Revolution spirit when the movie starts with Edith Piaf singing…Also, when Marie Antoinette was beheaded Napoleon was 24 years old. Phoenix looks 50 from the beginning to the end of the movie, just too old (plus Napoleon never saw that as he was not in Paris at the time, and Marie Antoinette’s hair had been cut…). It was bland and boring. Napoleon seen by a Brit - like if a Chinese director made a movie on President Lincoln and talked only about his relationship with his wife Mary, who had mental issues. The film shows a vulgar man, like an animal. Napoleon was a book worm, read thousands of books, was immensely intelligent and surrounded himself with competent generals - where are they in the film? No it was a tiktok movie made by a clueless Anglo director who should concentrate on his own British history and leave our French history alone, merci beaucoup.

    • @masseysmoviemadness1411
      @masseysmoviemadness1411 10 місяців тому

      I wouldn't suggest an Anglo director should focus on his own british history - just as I wouldn't suggest any french director should stick only to french history. Hitchcock was English and did no end of American stories for example. But in this circumstance it could have used a french expert/historian or something. Although Ridley Scott is generally cold in tone, which I suppose may be in part his englishness. It's an interesting perspective ❤

    I don't mind documentaries that focus on an aspect of a famous person's life for example using M.Ali. There's 1000 documentaries about his boxing style, technique, fights etc but a doco. about his gf's and his sexual appetites is interesting and fair enough for me. The problem I have with Napoleon isn't that they focused on his love life but they got the character of Napoleon himself so wrong. A movie about Napoleon and Josephine is interesting but you want to do the character of Napoleon justice and the story itself must be interesting or it's just gonna fail. I haven't seen the movie but I've heard enough from other reviewers to understand that Napoleon has been potrayed as uncharismatic, autistic and a complete simp. Look from the sounds of it, he was quite into Josephine in history. That's fair but at least show some snippets of his charisma. See Waterloo from the 1970s for reference.

      Yea that's the thing. There's isn't just 1 Ali documentary. There's heaps but I'll agree with you. If there was one, I'd want it to be about his boxing. That's essentially the problem. Scott has tried to show everything and he's ended up showing nothing. Everything he's shown is wrong. Character, battle set pieces, political intrigue etc etc. There's been loads of Napoleon films where they have done the smart thing and focused on 1 thing example Waterloo is about the events around Waterloo and it's probably the best Napoleon movie there is.@@masseysmoviemadness1411

      Would never have thought to compare napoleon with trump. I did make a full vid/documentary on trump if you're interested (not on this channel.) Was tonnes of work unlike this vid. I wouldn't suggest never seeing Napoleon on my account. It is largely tripe, but if possible to view it with the sound off, the action scenes and costumes and camerawork is good on the big screen. But as an overall film, a fail

    I don't understand how you can blame the actress. Napoleon himself seemed to be the problem to me, and Phoenix's acting was way more irritating.

    Keep in mind, Napoléon was 5’6” and of average male height for the time. He was bullied at a prestigious French 🇫🇷 Military Academy because he was… 1. Corsican and didn't speak French well. 2. Focused on his academic military studies. The scene in Egypt where Napoléon is given a stepping stool to see Cleopatra is pure cinematic fabrication. However, England in particular used these cartoonish propaganda images to alleviate the fear of Napoléon being the “God of War.” We don't get to see how Napoléon became a great military strategist, leader, and statesman; his childhood, education, and the Italian Campaign. Everything feels truncated. This should have been a 4-6 episode mini-series. Love to see a well-financed French 🇫🇷 Film Production of Napoléon. 1/5 or 2/10 And, that's being merciful to this PowerPoint Presentation excuse for a movie.

    1:21 TRUE. Even "back in the day" you had Princesses that were mermaids, Arabs, Chinese, Native American, and even French. Maybe that they are tall and pretty? Same art style? 2:32 Bit too far dude. Little kids can totally be racist. They absolutely can so racist. And that's before they get on XBOX live. 9:56 Wait, so is each ethnicity a racial stereotype (Asian guy knows Kung Fu and wears a rice farmer hat) or a trope stereotype (Asian guy is wacky)? Because the first one is racist and not-woke, and the other is.... nothing. Wait... so how is it woke? Because they had non-white characters that were underdeveloped? Almost all movies have underdeveloped background characters.

      Before they get on XBOX live cracked me up 😂 The psychology of humans (studied by professionals who aren't me) is that no child is born racist. A parent/negative influence can make them so, but put a white baby in china, I guarantee they will never grow up hating chinese people based on skin colour. Impossible. The woke thing was quite secondary in this film, although when the line 'Never trust a handsome face' was spoken with as much sincerity as snow white's 'never eat the poison apple' it did trouble me. I would say (in partial crit to myself) that if every character was white, they would have been just as dislikeable and undeveloped. But it feels almost like the writers are afraid to just make a person a person. They have to be a (add culture here) person. I loved your crit though :) honestly. Even if it was of me, you raised some great and valid points 🙏

      @@masseysmoviemadness1411 True that nobody is born racist but then their parents, media, structural forces make then racist blah blah, I have seen a ton of racist little kids. Disney's Mulan was nothing but Woke (Feminism good) and beloved. But Black Christmas 2019 had the same Woke message (Feminism good) and was viciously reviled from both sides from being annoying, over the top, toxic, and super sexist saying all men are rapists 24/7. But I still don't get how Wish is Woke. How is it Woke? And why is their Woke stuff bad? Other than being set in the Kingdom of New York. Its full of bland characters but that isn't Woke. Also: thank you for the reply.

      @@endplanetsJust cos a kid says racist things doesn't mean they're racist. A child can make no end of racist jokes but it doesn't mean they actually feel genuine ill feelings toward any other race. Eddie Murphy made fun of italians, chinese, white and more in his standups but I doubt there's any racism in him at all. Woke... I suppose what's your definition of woke?

    • @endplanets
      @endplanets 10 місяців тому

      @@masseysmoviemadness1411 I agree with the first part. Hard to tell legit racism from edgy jokes, and half the kids that tell edgy jokes stop telling them as jokes and it becomes legit racism but still. With adults its way less likely for them to convert via edgy jokes. Words change over time. Originally it was a forum term for people who "woke" up and realized that racism and inequality is real. Then it became a catchall for "be inclusive" (which is how I would use it if I used it routinely). Then it was turned into "be annoyingly / way too inclusive" for some people after it was weaponized by the media for clicks. Weirdly enough White Supremacists have almost the same thing. Around a decade ago when I was wandering white hood websites for personal research, a group on the forum used the term "awakening" which is when they had an "awakening" and realize white is best, that various genocides didn't happen (they did), and minorities should be removed with violence. And then they ditched their minority friends. Never really caught on because there are fewer racists than non-racists, its too awkward to turn into clickbait, and certain sectors of the media hadn't become that racist yet. What is your definition? Is it bad and if so how? And how is the movie woke?
