It's Lancashire's biggest paving slab.its not THE biggest....Colne had 1 of the first workers riots and the first policeman to be killed in the riot.Wallace Hartley did not drink and some people are offended that his name was given to the pub which was formerly The Kings Head..The CHurch is one of the oldest in England and has an unmarked Witches grave ..😊 Bonny Colne upon the HILL..

As a 17/18 year old in the early 80’s I lodged and worked in Shipley. Part of my training included a 2 week secondment to Salts Mill, then a working mill. I worked with the managing director of the mill, a lovely man called Edward Stanners and also on the shop floor, cutting rooms etc. What an amazing place, it employed so many people, from weavers to designers. The cloth was sold all over the world. I went with the Managing Director to London, we visited fashion houses and M&S to gain orders. Sadly cheaper alternatives caused the mill to close. My landlady’s elderly relatives lived in Saltaire in one of the ‘back to back’ houses. Back to back means the houses are terraced, but also attached are an identical row of houses joined at the back so there’s only one outside facing wall. One room upstairs and one room down, adapted to have an inside toilet and curtained off kitchen. I’ve returned to Yorkshire and plan a trip to see the mill as it is today so thank-you for this video.

At 8.21 is a shot of a white building - the club house for the cricket club based at Robert's Park. The Park is important as it is where the great right arm off-spinner Jim Laker began is career. Laker is still in the record books as the highest wicket taker in a single test taking 19 of the 20 wickets in an Ashes test at (I think) Old Trafford in the 1950's. Unfortunately for Yorkshire he played most of his career for Surrey and needed special permission at the time to leave Yorkshire and play for them.

Cistercian, normally pronounced "SIS STIR SHUN" but should be "SIS STIR SEE AN" .....think "politician". A private road may be on a public right of way. A private road is simply one that the residents have to maintain (not adopted by the local authority as a public road). Residents often put up intimidatory signs to try to discourage the hoi polloi. They rarely have any legal meaning. Ordinance Survey will usually show "rights of way" for pedestrians and bridleways but they are not as good about it as they used to be. Local authorities maintain definitive maps. I could claim to be the Shah of Iran. I can claim it as much as I like but it just ain't so. Same with intimidatory signs. Such a road MAY be actually private (as someone's private driveway) but rarely so. Again, nice little video. Thanks for pronouncing "Whalley" I've never been there or met anyone from there and always thought that it was "WAY LEE".

Thanks for the pronunciation tip 😁 Yeah you come across all sorts when you try and follow the ordnance survey maps don’t you. Chained up gates, branches and other obstacles trying to block the rights of way. Can be frustrating at times. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊👍🏼

The band on the Titanic numbered only eight including Wallace himself. They played at teatime and after supper FOR THE FIRST CLASS PASSENGERS ONLY. They rarely played as a single band but took turns playing as a trio or a quintet. Whilst some of them may have hoped against hope, I suspect that the majority of them resigned themselves to meet their maker somewhat earlier than they had suspected only hours before, and, as musicians, in the circumstances, what else would YOU have done ? It has certainly earned them a place in British and American history. It is a fine story, stiff upper lip and all that, but, 90% of those who died that night went to their deaths without ever hearing a single note from the band. After all, only the first class passengers had paid for the band in their tickets and in those class-conscious days, why SHOULD those who had paid less be permitted to listen to them ? Even in those circumstances, propriety must be maintained. This was a tragedy that need not have happened. The ship had been well built by the shipwrights of Harland and Wolff but the design was flawed. If you are to claim that a ship is unsinkable then the design should ensure that that is so. Although what happened was the heighth of improbability, it DID happen and to cut corners in the design in that it had bulkheads only going so far up amounted to, in my view, CRIMINAL IRRESPONSIBILITY. To make it unsinkable, it was necessary for the ships to have water-tight compartments of sufficient volume to keep at least part of the superstructure above water as a refuge for all on board regardless of catastrophic damage to the hull. In less than 28 months, the First World War was to begin. The threat from King Edward's spiteful and bombastic nephew, Kaiser Willy was well understood when plans for the Titanic were first being drawn up, and if they weren't understood then, they were clearly understood in the early years of George's reign and in time for modifications to be made during construction. Lack of sufficient lifeboats might not have been illegal at the time but was irresponsible almost beyond belief. I say, you either have lifeboats for everyone, or, save the money and have no lifeboats at all. What gross moral turpitude lead the designers to think that saving the lives of SOME of the passengers, would, in the event of a disaster, enable the owners to spin the news to thanking God for those who would be saved ..... and hoping that no-one would notice that the majority of passengers had drowned ? This dereliction was worse in that all three of the Olympic Class ships (Olympic, Britannic, and Titanic) and Cunard's Lusitania and Mauritania were all built in cooperation with the Admiralty so that, in the event of War, the ships would be turned over to the Navy and be battle ready in double-quick time. The design of the Lusitania was so sea-worthy that when attacked in 1915, she went down in 48 minutes taking 1,197 souls with her. Nice videos. Nice little gems in all of them.

I like Saltaire, though I've not been for about 10 years. When the weather is fine, it's a lovely walk from Saltaire to Shipley Glen, and even though the funicular tramway is not very long, it's an interesting ride up......we always walked back down. Titus Salt Jnr, in 1869, started building a mansion called Milner Field, which overlooked the mill. No expense was spared, and from what I've read in the book, even Royalty were visitors at the mansion. Sadly, the mansion became a white elephant, and by 1955, the mansion was a derelict building with no roof. The mansion was later demolished. Ferniehurst, which was built by his brother Edward Salt, suffered the same fate, along with many other magnificent mansions in England. At least Salts Mill, and the lovely buildings in Saltaire still stand.

Thanks so much again for sharing your knowledge 😊 It really is a privilege to have such a well preserved gem in the North of England but as you say, it’s a shame so much has been lost over time.

It's a lovely walk walking all around, up to the strid and over the other side of the river. I remember first going there 65 years ago (I was only 5 and we got warned to never try jumping across the strid), and have been many times since. Has become more commercialised over the years.

So nice to hear your personal experience with Bolton Abbey and The Strid! If we’d known just how dangerous it was we’d have been more careful 😅 They say it has a 100% fatality rate if you fall in. And you’re right, so many lovely walks and views but it is more commercial now. I’d have loved to have seen it 65 years ago 😊

@exploringthenorth with regards to the Strid, if you're interested, a photographer has some youtube videos on his channel......he put a video camera down into the water to investigate and film why the Strid is so dangerous. Sorry, off the top of my head, I cannot remember the name of his channel, but if you search for the strid at Bolton Abbey, I'm sure you'll find it.

I like the ringing tree the best, because of the sounds that it produces. Yeah, it's a shame that vandals decide to ruin things that have been erected for others to enjoy 😢

Thanks for sharing! It’s a great sculpture isn’t it and one we visit every 6 months or so for an easy short walk with the dog. The sound is great but it’s so hard to capture on camera as it’s always windy when the chimes are ringing 🤦🏼‍♂️😂

Found your channel (now subscribed) whilst searching for local places that I can access on my mobility scooter. To say that I only live a couple of miles away, I've never actually been in Ball Grove. Good capture of the deer and the robin 👍

Great to have you aboard and yes it’s one of those places you can easily drive past. Should be good for a mobility scooter though as the paths are pretty good, especially when it’s dry 😊 I’m sure they’ve also gravelled other paths recently too down by the river, so that might allow you to go further than you could before. Thanks again for subscribing 😁
