Ductile Iron 'Y' Strainer from Waterworks
"Hi team! In this video we will look at the Ductile Iron 'Y' Strainer available here at
Waterworks.
It’s an essential component for your water distribution systems. This strainer protects
your pumps, flow meters, valves, and regulators from damage caused by sand and
other solid particles which may otherwise pass through the pipeline. Let's explore its

Construction and Design
The strainer body is manufactured from ductile iron which has a higher tensile strength
than standard cast iron. The fusion bonded epoxy coating provides protection and
corrosion resistance to the strainer ensuring exceptional strength and durability. In
short, we call this an FBE Coated Ductile Iron body.
It is designed to operate effectively between 0 to +80°C, with a pressure range of 0 to
16 Bar or 232 PSI.
We currently stock the strainers in nominal diameters from 50 to 200mm.
Sizes 250 to 600mm are available on indent. Just contact our team to discuss this
option.
The flow direction arrow on the side shows the direction of flow which liquid is to pass
through the strainer.
The bolts and metal components are stainless steel.
Internal Components
At its core is a 304 stainless steel screen. The perforation size in the screen varies
depending on the strainer size. For example, a 50mm strainer has a 2mm hole perforation, and
200mm strainer has 5mm hole size. This screen is precisely fitted to prevent larger particles
from entering the pipeline.
The strainer seating is EPDM rubber.
Efficiency and Installation
The strainer's smooth contours and fine finish reduce pressure drop, ensuring efficient
operation. It's designed for easy installation in both vertical and horizontal pipelines,
maintaining effectiveness in either orientation. It’s recommended to keep the drainage
port facing down to facilitate easy maintenance and cleaning of the strainer. Regular
scheduled cleaning of the screen ensures the strainer’s ongoing optimum performance.
Standards and Compatibility
The strainer features flanged ends to a AS2129 Table E or AS4087 PN16 flange
configuration.
It is the WRAS approval and is manufactured in compliance with ISO 9001 best
practises.
It is also tested in accordance with API 598.
