    SC remastered does have control groups. Also the real area in which OG Starcraft shines is in the multiplayer "use map settings" and competitive scene, the action all over the map, the way victory makes the winning race look crushingly imbalanced only to look crushingly imbalanced the complete opposite direction the next game. It's so impossibly difficult to master, with so many ways to express your creativity and skill with where you decide to allocate your attention, It's brilliant! "Use map settings" or UMS games are super fun too, tower defense or RPG games all day long. The single player is just a sad, dated appendage to the multiplayer game where it really shines.

    I can't even play the game because it's so buggy. I couldn't complete the building tutorial because it wouldn't let me build or shoot, and it would randomly look straight up and start firing on its own. I played an online match and all I could do is throw grenades, melee, and refill turrets. It was entertaining to listen to my teammates discussing me beating bugs to death. I've played a lot of buggy games over the years, but this is the first that wouldn't allow me to shoot when that's the main thing you do. I've been playing games since the early 80's, I've never had one that was so broken I couldn't complete the tutorial. Mass Effect Andromeda wasn't this broken on release day, let that sink in

      The context I was going for was a little different, but that's fair. I was really meaning that there are over 400 games on PC game pass, which can make finding games time consuming, and the attention tends to be on the newer / larger titles. It's unlikely anyone would think to play the original Plants vs Zombies even if they had never played it. And to an extent, that is the same for the others on the list. People will be focused on Black Ops 6, Persona 3 Reloaded, Diablo IV, etc.

    I just finished the game for the first time myself, and I felt exactly the same about the combat. The game was very good on other areas, but the combat system and character progression felt quite barebones for me. Most of the time you can just wipe everyone with an aoe spell, or turbo auto mode through with basic attacks. That said I do get the hype for the game, especially if you have nostalgia for it. But it could have been even better.

    Looking through the lense of a 12 year old today, I dont think they would like it very much. I grew up in the golden age of RTS and this was my gateway into the wonderful world of basebuilding goodness. My children have no interest in playing a single map for 30+ minutes and not getting showered with stupid loot boxes or flashy lights. Lets make one thing perfectly clear, this game is absolutely a masterpiece, but it is also a relic of its time. 1998 10/10 no questions needed 2024 5/10 still fun but slow slow slow And for the record, I watch tastosis on a daily basis so i know exactly how fast paced and intense this game can be if played by the right player.

      @davevsgames2071 3 місяці тому

      So I did find a speed setting after re-installing. It speeds up EVERYTHING which is a pro and a con, but you are 100% right on that. Control groups though, do not exist as far as I can tell. Had tried it and just re-tried it again. Even switched up the key modifier several times to make sure it wasn't something other than ctrl + a number.

      Alright, yep, my mistake on both. As mentioned, for the speed, didn't realized it was in the options. It could be both. So Diablo is, IMO, the best APRG ever made. It started the genre. It atmosphere is amazing. YET, for someone that has never played it, it may not be worth playing today for them. The combat is incredibly simple by modern standards. It's slow. It's still a masterpiece, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone today unless it was just to experience it. Starcraft luckily, holds up much better... but it has aged.

    CORRECTION : Two very important points that I was mistaken on. Control Groups - These are in fact in the game. You select your units and can use ctrl + num to bind those units. Unfortunately, there is no visual indicator that this has happened (similar to SC2) so I didn't realize it had worked. I had just assumed that because I didn't see it show up on the UI similar to SC2, nothing had been bound. Speed of the Game - Turns out their IS a speed setting that I didn't realize was there in the options. It isn't exactly the solve I would be looking for, as it speeds up everything, not just build time and such. But it absolutely would have improved my experience. Installed the game again to confirm it's existence. 100% my mistake on both of these. Will try to do some more creative google searches in the future. I did search, but unfortunately most results are still for Starcraft 2. Original comment : So, I fully expect this review to upset some people and to reiterate what I said in the video. This is based on how the game plays today, in a world where Starcraft 2 exists. In a world where Age of Empires IV exists. We all only have so much time and that is the lens that I view games through, and how I tend to review a game. Plenty of older games still hold up fine (Chrono Trigger being an extremely good example). Others, struggle (Max Payne as an example). But there is no question both were great games when they were released. I am not saying Starcraft wasn’t an amazing game, and Starcraft Remastered is a wonderful remaster, but for anyone that does not have nostalgia for this game, particularly if they played Starcraft 2, this may be tough to play through. At least in my opinion. Also, I should have called out the fantastic music. It is absolutely wonderful.

      Yeah exactly. Everything, including combat, really helped with that immersion and Henry's skills felt appropriate for this background. Really curious if in the sequel, he is a bit stronger and a bit more capable. It would somewhat make sense given his combat experience by that point. Another great video! Very concise! I love Mega Man as a series, but the thing that keeps me coming back is always the music. MM2 may not be the best representative for that music, but it definitely does have some great tracks in there. I'd say that MM4 and 5 have better music overall, even if the gameplay of those are usually considered to be worse compared to MM2. MM2 definitely isn't perfect, though, despite all of the praise it gets. As you said, its biggest issues are the difficulty and the final boss. Personally, I wasn't bothered much by the boss, but I also already had heard about the weakness before getting to that point. The fight is kinda a bummer if you don't know the necessary weapon ahead of time. While the rest of the NES Mega Man games are pretty solid, I'd definitely recommend Mega Man X before any of those. It's just a little overhyped, thanks to the many videos about its game design, but even still, it's an excellent title. If you thought the music in MM2 was pretty alright, you'll probably really enjoy the music in MMX. The game design and difficulty curve is also a lot more refined. Btw, if you're looking for some really well-made NES music, I'd look into anything made by Sunsoft. Their games aren't always the best, but the music is always fantastic. Of the top of my head, I'd recommend "Batman: The Video Game", "Journey to Silius", and "Gimmick!". There's also always Tim Follin, if you've heard of him :)

    • @davevsgames2071
      @davevsgames2071 8 місяців тому

      Hadn't thought about Batman The Video Game in years. Guessing I would have been about 5 when I actually played it. Don't remember anything about the music so may be something I would revisit at some point. Feel like that will be true of a fair number of NES / SNES / Genesis games since they are typically short and work well as palate cleansers and also shorter games / videos in between larger ones. I think Mega Man X will be the next Mega Man for sure. And then I will likely revisit some others here and there. And yeah on the difficulty, it was tolerable and it wasn't overly hard as a whole, but those spikes... From what I have read, seems like I should plan on more of that when / if I play through more NES Mega Man games, but I enjoyed 2 enough that I probably will after X (or I will end up stuck on the X series). Thanks as always for the discussion. Really appreciate it. Discussions like this is really what I hope the series eventually grows into (at a larger scale). Eventually with a discord where there would be more back and forth, and conversations as I (and anyone else that wanted to tackle the game at the same time) played through it. BUT, it's a bit idealistic, and who knows if / when we will get to that point. For now, enjoying the discussions here and playing through all these games that have spent far too long on my backlog. Oh and I did lookup Tim Follin. Couple games on there that could make their way into the backlog at some point :)

Will give it to the end of the day but yeah the 30-60 min I played definitely had me interested. Great horror vibes and atmosphere even that early.

    The issue is that TWW3 was not a straight upgrade from TWW2. It is the same game, arguably worse eg seiges and bad AI.

    Nice video. I've been playing Total War since 2006ish, after Medieval 2 Total War was released. I have loved this series ever since, and have played every entry except for the recent Pharoah release, which just looks like a thrown together cash grab. Totalwar Warhammer 3 has been out for a while, and it includes everything from Warhammer 1, 2 and everything added for 3 for a massive and amazing experience in the Immortal Empires campaign. The game has come SO FAR since Warhammer 1. If you wait for a sale you can get Warhammer 3 and DLCs (some races require a separate DLC purchase to play them). Anyhow, it was cool to hear a fresh perspective on this game from someone new to the series. If

      @@davevsgames2071That is a very real issue. I took around a 1 year break from this game, and came back to it around 4 months ago, and am now in my 7th consecutive campaign! I started with Archaon (WoC), then switched to Karl Franz (The Empire), then Eltharion (High Elves), then to Ikit Claw (Skaven), then Be'lakor (more WoC, they are my favorite race), next to Vlad Von Carstein (Vampire Counts), and I am currently more than 100 turns in as Thorgrim Grudgebearer (Dwarfs). And, it's not out of the realm of possibility that I could go for an 8th campaign -- but not sure who that would be yet. I play with a handful of mods to enrich the experience, like the Legendary Characters mod which adds 50+ legendary lords and heroes to the game. And another mod that adds new factions to the unplayable areas of the current WH3 Immortal Empires map (i.e. Ind, Kuresh, Nippon, etc).

    So warhammer, warhammer 2 or 3?

    • @davevsgames2071
      @davevsgames2071 9 місяців тому

      This was very specifically covering Warhammer (1). I did make a note later in the video explaining that you can play the campaign from the first, in Warhammer 2 as long as you own the first game. I would assume the same is likely true for 3 but don't own the third so didn't want to say either way.

    • @marceror
      @marceror 9 місяців тому

      @@davevsgames2071Correct. If you own Warhammer 3 you will get access to the expanded map that includes all areas from Warhammer 1 (old world), Warhammer 2 (Southlands, Lustria, Nagarond, Ulthuan), and Warhammer 3 (expanded lands to the far east of the world. You can only play races that you own the content for, so if you want to play Dwarves in Warhammer 3, you need to own Warhammer 1. But even if you don't own that content, those races will be present in the world and you can interact with them. Some races are available from the base games they originated in, like the Empire in Warhammer 1 and Lizardmen in Warhammer. Some races require you to purchase a separate DLC to play them like the Tomb Kings or the Chaos Dwarfs.

    • @marceror
      @marceror 9 місяців тому

      @@davevsgames2071 One other reason to consider playing Warhammer 3 over Warhammer 1 is that even original races like the Empire and the Dwarves have huge updates that are not reflected in Warhammer 1. For example, the Empire in Warhammer 2 and soon to be further developed in Warhammer 3 have the Elector Count System and many added regions in their lands. The elector count system provides unique bonuses, a unique weapon and regional units for each of the Electors. Unite that empire as Franz or Gelt and you will gain access to all of these benefits. There is also a fealty system that aids in uniting the your empire and you can use prestige to further manage your realm. In short, it's a much richer and fleshed out experience in Warhammer 3. It is also a good deal more challenging, as Imperial Authority (another feature) will drop if your empire loses key lands to enemies, and that can give you some negative effects. Take them back and raise your imperial authority for new faction benefits. The Dwarfs have a number of new dwarf holds and starting positions in Warhammer3. They also have access "The Forge", which allows them to craft weapons, armor, and other gear by spending Oathgold. Lords and heroes can also equip dwarven ruins, which is provides 3 additional equipment slots for every character, with unique bonuses. Most races have more legendary lords and generic lord types in the later games too. The game has evolved *A LOT* since Warhammer 1.

      @@davevsgames2071Okay, 3rd and last post on this topic, but if you are interested in playing as Chaos you HAVE to play them in Warhammer 3 for the full experience. They were pretty bare bones in Warhammer 1, with just 3 Legendary Lords, a limited Chaos Undivided roster, and a clunky horde mechanic. In Warhammer 3 there are EIGHT legendary lords for the Warriors of Chaos, and you have access to units from all of the 4 Chaos Gods (Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch), and Undivided, which are warriors to do not follow any specific God, but embrace all of them. Dark Fortresses is a much better mechanic than the horde system, and Warband upgrades allow you to see your lowly marauders gain victories and ascend as Chaos Warriors, Chaos Knights, Chosen and even Aspiring Champions. You have full control over how you upgrade those units. You can summon Chaos Daemons into your armies, and raise your Lords into Daemon Princes. There is so much variety. In addition to the Warriors of Chaos, there are also Daemons of Chaos Factions for every Chaos God and Chaos Undivided. Be'lakor is my favorite Chaos Legendary Lord, as he gains easy access to Daemons from all Chaos Gods and mortal units from all Chaos Gods. He also can create Shadow Portals, allowing his armies to teleport around the map which is extremely useful. He can also confederate with the other 7 WoC factions (as can Archaon), for a lot of variety in legendary lords.

      100% agree. Where I am coming from though, is really, we all only have so many hours in a day (or life in general), and some games hold up better than others. Some games can more easily compete for your time with games being released today than others. Most games are special to someone and worth someone's time. But what I am trying to do is give someone an idea of how a game holds up now. Super Metroid, in my opinion, holds up well enough to easily be worth most people's time today, even when compared to other recent games they could be playing. As an example, I love Goldeneye 007, my early teenage years had hundreds, possibly thousands of hours in that game. And I could play it today and have fun. But would I recommend it to someone today that had no history with the game? Probably not. A lot of it really wouldn't hold up well in my opinion. But then again, my opinion would be biased by nostalgia, so it at least, would never been in the Operation Backlog series where I am really trying to take a fresh look having not played the game previously. Anyway, just some context on why I frame it the way I do.
