Pathos: African meets Hindustani

Pathos: African meets Hindustani Agbekor layers build the groove in 12/8, and vocalized tabla compositions weave intricate designs inside the fabric of time. For decades, I have been developing contemporary compositions and teaching models that weave Indian repertoire and concepts inside African grooves, allowing the body to respond first to the groove with the mind discovering new layers and d...

Clavamba Clavé meets samba in this arrangement played on multiple Ewe drums, with a few twists and turns along the way. Using Ewe drums, the Yambu clave is played on the bell and low drum. On high drums, Son and Rumba clavé weave around the Yambu. An original clavé phrase (rotating the son to a different position) joins the series. The 4/4 sequence transitions to 6/8 for a profound shift in fee...

So very great! Thank you!!!
Groovy will try on my dundun and balafon
Interesting and cool
I've been interested in getting a drum like this for awhile. What is the difference between this and a Brekete drum? I love that snare sound.
this is very cool, I'll have to try this on my three Ekwe logs drums
really great stuff, thanks for sharing. If you orchestrate that bell pattern on a frame drum you would basically get a Maqsum. this would be cool way to give the maqsum a triplet feel by putting the 8 beats on the foot bell.
♥
So inspiring Jerry! What appeals to me about your approach is that it seems your focus is on how to play deeper with fewer notes rather than how to play more notes faster. I'm about to hop on the path you've laid out and see what kind of experience it brings me. Thank you for putting in so much time and thought and effort into making these superb videos for a wider audience of interested students who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to learn from you. Truly a noble public purpose.
Amazing

Beautiful!
Nice African drumming with horns line
Thanks!!!
Love it!
Very nice
I miss Abubakari so much! And Dave Locke! After 3 years of studying with them he offered me to go visit him in Dagban. “Come visit and we will live in the bush!” And the huge Abu laugh! Ive mostly stayed a broke Jazz saxophonist and never had the opportunity to tour or travel in Africa. Thank you so much Jerry for continuing this knowledge at Berklee (i was there 90-95)!
Hi Berklee really appreciate you video and love how your use different instruments. I am learning to play the moroccan frame drum. It is really fascinating.
Great insight
great to hear the melody of rhythm/rhythm of melody. thanks so much!
Wow... what a wonderful performance. Love it.
Nice job Jerry!
Nice to see some familiar names from my "wayback machine" on this track!
love the visuals Jerry, fantastic job.
Tremendous. Been a fan since 2010, good to see you're still kicking around
Life's Rhythm of the soul in action! My Heartbeat. Please Post Recordings Availability when possible
And you have 57 views. No wonder, for educational drumming...... Boring. Bring on crazy insane drumming patterns and show off with changing camera angles....with zooming in and out. And a girl in a bikini would also help a lot. 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
Drum on brother.
This requires effort. Nice work, Jerry.
Excellent, as some one who hails from the part of Ghana where this drum is traditional to, am exited to see this.
🤌🤌👌
African rhythms are forgotten in the western world. My friend Andy has been drumming for over 30 years and is teaching me. We are currently doing African rhythms and I found your channel when doing some research of my own. Very easy to follow, while containing tons of info. Thanks for the video!
healing.
incredible visuals Jerry, takes the music to the next level. so great! 💯🎶🎧🥁
Such a painful and beautiful video and song. Thank you and all the other artists who captured the absurdity of war so well, along with the human condition. There is no “us” and no “them”. What we do to one another we do to ourselves and is a statement of what’s been done to us. By being compassion itself we stop the cycle. Yet there’s profound hope contained in the content of this video behind all the surface pain, that we can see it and change to embrace our own humanity and invest in something more. Be solid and patient as Mother Earth, be ever embracing like mother sky, and shine your warmest, purest light upon all as father sun. Thank you Jerry for the ways your art inspires and moves us to be better!
Well done and inspiring as ever!
THIS IS SICK!!! Thanks for sharing!
thank you!! :)
Really thanks for this masterclass!!
Excellent! Carnatic training?
Did you transcribe this? If so, is there any music available? Amazing playing, thank you!
Thanks for the comment, Ty! No transcription. I found an interesting path into the tune and never thought to write it down.
@@JLBERKLEE That’s alright! I love it, I’m thinking about trying to play an arrangement for an upcoming recital
Hey! This video is sick! I am wondering if each drum serves a role? For example does the Kagan serve to just keep time or does it improvise, as well? Is the Kiri the most improvisational drum? Or do they all just play around that skeleton rhythm?
Bell, Shaker, and Kagan never change their patterns -- they are timeline grooves (like clavé). Kidi can ornament its basic groove a bit but must keep the main pattern clean. Sogo has lots of improvisation options built around its basic pattern. Both sogo and kidi respond to Boba master drum themes. They play response patterns in unison to form a dialogue with the Boba. Hope this helps...
Love that this is up here! Thanks, Jerry! Continuing on from our lessons <3
Jerry, you not only know how to make leather mallets you know how to make hope....
Thanks, Rich and bless you! Still loving the mallets and I am forever grateful for your wonderful help in creating them!
@@JLBERKLEE Jerry, wonderful to hear from you! Thank you for you comments! How close did you get to production?
@@RichmondCastano We got pretty close - Vic Firth (huge stick maker) was interested and we had a meeting, but then the pandemic hit and everything was off the table. Just as well, I would have had to make each and every mallet and that would be have a heavy load. How's fishing going in retirement? (even ice fishing : )
