I eat surströmming every year. It’s an old tradition. My favorite market is “Röda Ulven”.

Using salt to preserve food before refridgerators and freezers.Simple as that. Not a culinary treat, more like a trip throug human history.

Oh yeah, you'd not eat it like that. Swedish thin bread, potatoes, red onin, butter and a tiny piece of surströmming. And also, snaps. And a nice song :)

Daaamn! the Aussies are more versatile and open-minded than many people in the world that had tried and failed to eat herring! This is gansta "shit" in Scandinavia :) just lite fermented whale in Iceland! We just have fermented herring old delicate food, just a food to separate men from the boys! It´s usually opened in underwater like in a bucket of water, to get rid of excess smell and gas! i personally ate it first time when i was 16 and liked it :) Just some people don´t have the stomach for it. I recommend to have a stiff vodka afterwards! And remember to give a kiss to the missus ;)

Its rotten fish, some poor Scandinavians several hundreds years back were probably starving and all they had acess too was rotten fish, threw a bunch of salt on it and made a rotten fish stew and live too tell the tale. 200 years later people pretend too like it all over the world x)
