Fantastic lesson. Thank you.
Hieno homma että tällaista tarjolla!
Tunnetaanko tätä millään muulla nimellä?
It's been a long time since you posted a video. I hope you are doing well.
Who are some of the fiddlers you would recommend? Also would you be able to direct me to some early field recordings of traditional folk music?
Hi Aidan! A very good question! There are certainly many fiddlers, who are worth listening to. Here is one list of Swedish fiddlers: sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kategori:Svenska_fiolspelm%C3%A4n One of my favourite traditional fiddlers from Sweden has been Björn Ståbi. He concentrated on a fiddle tradition from the middle of Sweden, although he lived mostly in the capital Stockholm. Here are a few of the most famous traditional fiddlers from Finland: Johan Erik Taklax, Kustaa Järvinen, Matti Haudanmaa, Erkki Metsäpelto and Otto Hotakainen. Most of those fiddlers can be heard on some complilation albums, but part of their playings can be found only in archives. I haven´t been listening or playing so much Norwegian folk music, but here´s some information in English: ofsdal.com/resources/22%20-%20The%20fiddle%20traditions%201682011.pdf I hope you got some help of this. All the best to you!
It's been a long time since you posted any new videos. I hope you're doing alright.
Very nice tune.... thank for sharing! Friendly, Mauro
Kiitos näistä videoista! Ovat 'nuotinlukurajoitteiselle' tosi iso apu kun näitä koittaa opetella.
Kiitos Saku itsellesi monista hienoista mandoliinivideoista! Niitä on hienoa katsella ja kuunnella!
You're back! Yay! A New Year's gift to your fans like me. That sounded great. I play octave mandolin, and sometimes capo it at the 5th fret to turn it into a mandola. One instrumental piece I composed with that set-up I named "Tapio's Mandola", after your old Finnish god of the forests. Anyway, so happy to see/hear you again!
Wow, I would definately like to hear that Tapio´s Mandola song!!!
I'm such a fan of these beautiful videos. I love the over-tracking of the mandolin parts, so tasteful and intricate. Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you so much again, C.A.T. ! I hope you, that I won´t disappoint you, because all of my up-coming videos in the future are gonna be solo-recordings :)
@@jarmoromppanen I dig your solo videos too, and look forward to your future endeavors! Best wishes from California!
Such a beautiful touch on the instrument... you really make the mandolin sing.
C.A.T. thanks you so much for the kind words!
Happy tune, happy musician! I also love playing this on mandolin.
And I use every one of your tips on making the music richer. Sound advice indeed!
@@fredericksemple6366 thank you so much! I´m filming and recording new stuff right now, so more triplet polskas are yet to come!
Beautiful. I want to play this tune!
Yes, this is a great tune. And it is not a Nordic one, but it has been very popular here as well as in many places all over the world :) I´m sorry I don´t have tabs for this one.
When do you use the low D strings? I see your mando sheet music has the standard 4 line tab notation. I love the music you shared and am excited to play a few of your tunes.
Hi Lorrie! Thanks for the message. Yes, it is a common mando tab. It won´t be too confusing for the others :) I use the low D when ever it is possible, as a drone note to make the sound a bit heavier. Common keys in Nordic folk (as well as in bluegrass) are G major and D major, so there are many chances to use the string.
Thanks so much for send us so many fantastic polkka, jenkka and mazurkas. I play it all 🙏👏👏😊
Great!! Thank for your feedback, Dany!
Is there such a thing as mandolin speed metal? If not, you could plug in and originate the genre yourself!
C.A.T. yes, indeed! I should grow my hair first 😄
Bravo!
Thanks for watching, Eric!
As impressive as your speed is your rock-solid sense of time. Kudos!
Thank you so much C.A.T. The faster it goes, the less kudos there will be :)
Bravo! Now I have some goals to work towards.
Thank you, Eric! Go for it!!
This sounds like Finnish-Appalachian fusion music, played as impeccably as always. I'm curious, though, why whenever I click on the net address you give I always end up at a site advertising motorcycle and tractor parts?
:) I think it has something to do with your YT-feed, not mine. Hopefully!
I'm curious about what's going on at the 2nd fret on the two lowest pairs of strings. It looks like there are pegs in the fingerboard as one sees on the "Swedish mandola"... is that right?
Wonderful video, full of great tips... thanks! As a rhythm octave mandolinist I particularly liked the "rhythmic accompaniment" part. So many videos on Nordic music focus on melody playing, but I wish there were more that broke down the strum patterns for polskas, slangpolskas and the other types of tunes for folks like me who like to play chordal accompaniment.
Yes, you’re absolutely right! I’m missing polskas so far, and there will be some great ones in the future, both for melody players and accompaniment players 😃 Polska is best!!
@@nordicmandolinbyjarmorompp7801 Thank you for your kind reply. I spent nearly forty years playing bass guitar in rock bands, although mandolin was actually my first instrument. Now I've some full-circle and am focusing on composing instrumental music on my octave mandolin, mainly influenced by Nordic music, just for my own pleasure. I've just recently discovered your channel, and am a fan now, and I thank you for posting these videos. (P.S. My sister had an ancestry test done last year, and it revealed that on our mother's father's Swedish side there is some Finnish ancestry as well, which makes me happy!)
C.A.T. WOW!! Thanks for sharing your story! Nordic blood, yes! I started with classical guitar myself, then changed to bass guitar and electric guitar and played hard rock, and finally found mandolin 😁
That rocked... absolutely stunning.
Thank you so much for listening and for the nice words!
Really nice version of Lokakuun.
Thanks Eric! I´ve been warming up, so there will be a speed challenge (for me) with Lokakuun polka, coming up after two weeks :)
Beautifully played. So many hours of practice.
Kenneth Van Thanet, thank you so much! It took a couple of takes too :)
Very nice !
Hey there do you have any song like medieval style?
Hello there, you play sound very lovely, im was going to buy a 8 string madolin price with 50 dollar but i wont sure will it be good or not, cause is cheap, so do you have any suggets for me i will be grateful for your help.
VIETCONG TOMATO thank you! It is ok to start playing with a cheaper mandolin, if it is in a reasonable condition. I did it too, and then I bought a bit more expensive one 😀
@@nordicmandolinbyjarmorompp7801 thank you for the advice friend
Smakfullt och bra spelat! Vad är det som sitter på greppbrädan vid det andra bandet förresten?
Stefan Dahl tusen tack!
Sounds awesome, now I have to go through your other videos! :)
Stefan Dahl thank you so much, and keep on picking!
Nice job dude, wish you had add some harmonica to the party though
Gunga , yes you’re right! Harmonica and two-row accordion sound great with a mandolin 😀
Well played. Did you add any effects to this in your daw or is it all natural?
Thank you! I always have a little bit of eq, some compression to get the punchier sound and some reverb as well. But I still want my playing sound natural in the end :)
Mielenkiintoisen näköinen mandoliini sinulla ! Onko tuo matalin kieli C, eli ikäänkuin tavallinen ja altto samassa paketissa ?
Lähes :) Olen virittänyt sen matalimman kielen D:hen, koska kansanmusassa sille on enempi käyttöä.
A 5 string mandolin, nice. Is that a custom made instrument or can you buy one like that?
Hi Patrick! Yes, it is a custom made instrument, made by a Finnish luthier Arto Pulkkinen. I got it 2002, at that time they were hard to find, but I suppose you can find 10-string mandolins more easily nowadays 🙂
Hi Jarmo! So cool to see someone play mandolin from Scandinavia! I'm a mandolinist! I'm sure there are loads, but you are the second person I've come across who play professionally! I love the sound of your playing, what mandolin do you have? I have a Paul Shippey A5 mandolin! :)
Hi Rory! Thank youfor the message! Yes, we don’t have too many mandolin-players here in the Nordic Countries. My mandolin is build by a Finnish luthier, Arto Pulkkinen. It has five courses, I have low D, not C :)
I really like your music and enthusiasm for the instrument. Please, tell us about your 10-string mandolin, who built it, scale length, string gauges, etc. Thank you.
Shelley Heard, thank you so much! The luthier is Arto Pulkkinen here in Finland. I will tell more about my instruments in upcoming videos and I will add the specs in the description too, but here they come anyway: 10-string mandolin Body rims, back: - thermo treated cherry wood Spruce top, x-bracing (thermo treated) Mahogany neck (thermo treated) Jacaranda peg head veneer/bindings Abalone inlays Schaller Mini tuners wearing Ebony knobs Jacaranda bridge Traditional truss rod Jescar Evo Cold # FW 37053-200 Scale 364 mm 16" radius The standard tuning plus low D (the fifth course) The strings: 11-15-26-39-E6 (nylon wound)
@@nordicmandolinbyjarmorompp7801 Many thanks for the information on the mandolin; I look forward to future videos. I was expecting the low course to be C, (mandola-esque) but D makes sense as both a drone and melody string; all the best.
Shelley, exact! That’s the point :)
Beautiful!
MrFair , thank you so much!
Wow !! It's beautiful, I listen to it again and again !! :)
Thank you so much! The winter is coming again little by little here in Finland :)
By the way, can you direct me to a good luthier that sells this type of mandolin?
Unfortunately I can’t tell you directly. It was a Finnish luthier called Arto Pulkkinen, who built me this 10-string mandolin. He’s not building anymore. But I’m pretty sure, there are some in Europe, who make these a-models with a bit bigger scale.
Thank you for the answer! I've been searching and I'm sure I can get there!
I just found your channel and it was a great surprise... I play Irish bouzouki but mostly play Scandinavian music, so I think I will learn a lot with your videos! Also I'm thinking about getting a mandolin to better work on melodies. I'll be sure to follow your videos!
Jaime, thank you for subscribing! I’ve had a summer break on my channel, but I will continue soon. And some octave mandolin stuff also coming in the future :)
Great stuff, Jarmo!
Thanks, Esa!
Onpas kaunista! Upea piisi ja hienot maisemat.
UkeEsa kiitos!
