HSCC 70s Roadsports Silverstone Finals Race 2 - TVR Vixen
A front row start for the first time and although my start was a little better, the green Lotus of Chris went flying by!
Managed to get back into second and chase down the Porsche while he was desperately trying to get heat into his tyres.
Howard in his Lotus Europa was flying and Mark, having changed over to the pther Lotus Elan, found way more grip than before. With his understeer cured, my advantage was gone.
After being passed I decided to just back off a little, calm the revs back down and bring the car home to fiinsh the season in 4th overall.

Nothing like stalling on the start line. Great skills from everyone to miss me! P9 on the grid back to 21st abd drove back up to 8th place overall. Was a fun race in the end! It was all going so well. P2 in my first race and after solving why my brakes were terrible (no material left on the front pads), I entered race 2 ready to go. Brakes were amazing and I cut my lap times by 1 second. Having an awesome time until BANG. The gearbox destroyed itself 2 laps from the end. #gearboxfail #damage #racingcar #tvr #lotus

After all my trouble with my engine and diff, the car was finally running in its sweet spot. It ran very well and grip levels were amazing. Engine Back Out - After one race the TVR race engine has to come back out with overheating issues

After a great couple of races at Snetterton, post race checks on the engine are not good. A melted spark plug indicating detonation and a possible worn piston ring. Hopefully the engine block will not have taken any damage. The engine is now back out while I sort out coolant air locking issues. A new alloy header tank is going in. I struggle around Snetterton but was very happy with the car! @@goorgert1364 To be fair my cars running the same bhp as the Lotus lot but I’m approx 70kg heavier. I can drop weight with lighter panels so probably a future upgrade
Outstanding effort, keeping up with the Porsche and keeping the lotuses at bay for a couple of laps. Looks so much fun!

What’s the deal on class? You at 1600 and then at at least 2500
So the classes are structured in cc but the Lotus lot are in a separate class on their own. My class is fibreglass cars up to 1600cc excluding Lotus
@@Tomkitek Limited to 1,600cc, surely you can't be running as much BHP as the twin cam's? They must be starting with around 30 bhp more in original factory build spec.
@@SteveThomas-r7u We’re allowed +60 thou overbore but restricted to 33 chokes on the Webers. I’m running 168bhp at the flywheel. A couple more bhp than the Lotus!

Really impressive driving on your part.Vixen appeared to have better handling on that circuit.lighter cars and a edge on bhp showed at begining ,but they fell back halfway through(?) Well that`s the way i saw it.
@@limjamrace Yeah the Vixen seemed to get grip earlier in the corner so could carry speed into the straight to make up for the lighter lotus lot. The elan was suffering from huge understeer and the Europa was hunting for the overall championship so didn’t want to be too crazy with me 🤣

Yeah I was having to push it in that race close to 8k rpm round the corners to try and get the drive out to keep ahead on the straights. It’s a brilliant motor 👍

Not sure how you could see anything at all with all that spray, I hope the camera is worse at seeing through it than your eyeballs! Shame it was such a short bit of racing but total understandable with the two crashes.
@@The_Cotswold_Engineer The camera looks better than I remember 🤣 Yeah it wasn’t great. Race 2 was better for visibility and a full 20 minutes. Hopefully have that up tomorrow 👍
That looks awful, no fun at all. I guess you were lucky to get away without being injured or having damage to your car.
Have to say it was as hard mentally as it was physically. Best thing about it though, is the 70s Roadsports lot are awesome people to race with. I have a lot of confidence in them all and we all have a lot of respect for each other so as long as you can control your own car, it’s as safe as racing can be 👍 Crazy conditions though

Are there gear sets available that have a shallower helix angle? They'd get you closer to the strength of straight cut ones, but still fit within the rules. Also, I remember reading about cryo treatments helping gears become more resilient.

I’m not aware of anything like that and with our regs it has to be standard gears so not much I can do…
It’s managed 60 minutes of racing so far. Not much option other than chancing an original set….
@Tomkitek i wouldn't use Quaife.......but BEST of luck
Would be better using Sonoco Fuel....chemically stable......unlike SHELL....V-Power loses Octane every day.
I tend to buy the V-Power the week of racing and add an octane booster. Being on a very tight budget, Sonoco (or dolphin tears as we call it) it’s very expensive
@Tomkitek But You have not fixed the problem with the FUEL. Pump FUEL ,absorbs Air like a Dry Sponge absorbs water
@@gj91471 Yeah agreed. Our regs restrict what we can do to the engine so work well on pump fuel. They are only ever set up on Vpower or BP Ultimate
@Tomkitek Shell V-power is very chemically unstable........it was not Shell's idea to put Nitrogen in fuel.....they stole that idea.
No Air Filters ? Unfiltered Air and Rubber picked up on a race track....= massive engine wear. A Performance Filter Set Up doesn't effect Engjne Output.....not even a tenth of a horsepower
Yeah I’ve been looking into this. In the past the carbs were burning the filter backfiring but I think this was an engine issue at the time….

What engine/state of tune in your TVR?
It’s a 1658cc Ford Crossflow. All steel with twin 40 carbs but regs restrict us to 32 chokes.
Great racing. I was willing you past but not to be. Out of interest what clutch are you running?
It’s an AP racing clutch. It’s either on or off which is a bit of a pain.
@@Tomkitek OK thx. I'm running std std 7.5" Helix which lasts approx 6 events, so two clutches each season. Thinking of fitting Lotus Twincam 8.5" clutch & flywheel this winter to see if that improves longevity. As you say the AP race clutch is a bit too off/on for road use. 👍

Felt sorry for poor Woody in the Anglia at Redgate on lap 3. Plastic to the left of him, plastic to the right of him, plastic right behind him! Fantastic race and a great drive by you.

Not sure how the Lotus pulled away some times, seemed to have an extra boost. On the last corner before the grandstand straight, you both took different lines, how come? Could you not follow directly?
@@stuartnaylor3969 The Lotus is twin cam so smoother power delivery and he is approx 70kg lighter which always helps. I was forcing him to go defensive on the last corner so I could take a wider line and get earlier on the power so I could try and stick with him down the straight.
Cracking race there, you were all over the back of that Elan! Guess lap 10 was were the power dropped off a little, then the filling fell out of the sandwich 😂. Some might say a rose between two thorns...😁🙃! But probably only us TVR nutters

Certainly getting Mark rattled a bit.Impressive acceleration from 60 to 100 mph ... What do you reckon taking weight off the Vixen somehow. Pity they didn`t market it with the Twin /Can unit.
@@limjamrace Yeah made him sweat a bit! I’m actually 40kg overweight. Would need a new bonnet and doors to lose that. Power wise we are actually very similar. The twin cam just picks up revs smoother

Great recovery drive. That engine just seems to keep pulling, good job.
The engine is great. I can apparently rev it even more but prefer to shift at 7k rpm to hopefully keep it in one piece for longer 🤣
Super aggressive comeback drive! What do you think caused the stall? Sticky tyres on a hot track? Anyway, it produced an exciting video seeing you carve your way up through the field. Your personal adrenaline tank was clearly full, but a shame that your GoPro cameras couldn’t capture the “red mist” that was probably affecting your view! 😅 It was great to meet you last Sunday at Croft and I look forward to the video of Race 2. Hi Tony. Great to meet you. The clutch on the car is incredibly aggressive. It’s either on or off. As a race driver excuse, after putting the engine back in the clutch pedal biting point is a little different but I think it was driver error more than anything.

Yeah it was great to meet you. Nice to see so many TVRs on display. Car ran well. It’s was crackling a lot in the second race which you’ll see and I lost a backplate on one of the Weber’s so the fuel mix was out. Luckily over fuelling so no engine issues! I’ll show it in a video 👍

Why do they not allow you to use a different gear cut? Not being allowed to use a different gearbox from stock altogether makes sense, but specifically a gear cut?
@@jimmydesouza4375 The regs are intended to as much as possible keep cars to their ‘factory’ specification. Adds a bit of a challenge for people but it also stops people with deep pockets ‘buying’ race wins with a heavily developed car

Yeah I’ll show people the gears out the box in the next video. Yeah something went wrong in my video edit, that music was meant to be over a part showing me remove the engine but when I’ve saved it, it all seemed to get muddled up and I didn’t watch it back until it had uploaded to UA-cam 🤦♂️

Haha. Our race was merged with Historic Touring cars. The Anglia I think was a pre crossflow car? Was very quick and really well driven

I was desperate to see if the engine was ok and if so let it tick over for a little while to cool down
