No idea why the engine suddenly started to sound like it was running under water, sounded OK to my organic ears :-) Back on the case. my Life ECU and wiring guru has spent a couple of days sorting out wiring mistake made by the company that made the loom and writing a basic MAP so we could start the car safely. Another wiring issue I have yet to fix is the loom to the alternator has two wires b...
New trailer

After months of looking, including sifting though all the scams on FB I finally found what I have been looking for. The bonuses are that it is local and I know the sellers father-in-law so confident that it is legit. Apologies for the shakiness of the video and my out of breathlessness but I have only just started walking again after around 4 weeks in bed with a damaged Sciatic nerve bundle. Th...

AND I saved 100gms :-) Not sure what to call it as it is neither a wing nor a spoiler, although most drag racers call it a wing.

Apologies for the wind and traffic noise. Sound quality is even worse than my normal rubbish stuff.
Unwrapping wet lay carbon side skirt sheet.
Переглядів 278 місяців тому
I have run out of prepreg, so have reverted to wet lay as I have plenty of carbon cloth. MUCH prefer prepreg: easier to cut and shape in the mould, less consumables required, much quicker to cure, no messy resin to mix up and spill or brushes and spreaders to clean. Prepreg parts are also, generally, lighter.
Carbon fibre angle using the proper release agent.

I have one with a cross slide. Anyone interested?
Hi Steve, nice progress! can't wait to see the first road trials...
Fantastic O G
Hello what kind of heater is it? Is it using infrared or drying tubes? Thanks.
what a nice trailer! you're almost set to hit the road now... ;) Nic
Nice work. Can you tell me what kind of clothing you used under? I am making molds for two boat windshields.
How does this work?
Hi there. To have an angle that has the most resistance possible to twisting, (like one hand on each side of the part and twisting your wrists), we should have the fibers orientated in the 90/0 degrees, right? Thanks! :)
Preventing twisting is difficult as the stresses are in all directions. Using a bidirectional weave is, in my opinion, your best bet. Some people recommend that layers should be orientated at 45 deg to each other but, according to my carbon supplier, this will make very little difference and can result in increased material wastage.
That is the best 'diy' air curtain design I have seen. Well done.
Love it, no more excuses./
They are for underfloor panels
What in the world are these for
They are used to create vortices in the airflow which help to keep the laminar flow attached to the body for longer. Well, that's the theory.
It randomises the hold feature, you will see recesses in the yellow cams the gap can be adjusted to make the holds more or less frequent. my machine also has a switch to allow it to hold after a hold or win i couldn't see one in the vid
Cheers. It does hold after hold or win but that might just be random.
Hell yeah
It's a Vega
?
@@lotuselansteve Chevrolet offered their Vega with a Cosworth Twin Cam engine. Probably about 1974. I was 10, then.
@@andylowe2725 Same engine company but different engine.
cosworth motor?
Yup.
no wonder i did not recognize it@@lotuselansteve
Fantastic to see OG
Yes, about time :-) However, we have a couple of issues. One being the ECU, although top of the pile when purchased, doesn't support drive by wire. When we got it DBW wasn't 100% reliable so we stayed with cable. Since then we have updated to DBW. So a new ECU is required and has been ordered. The other issue has been trying to install the software on the PDM. Hopefully, we will be able to sort this out tomorrow with a Teamviewer session with the Danish manufacturers of the unit.
soon to hit the tarmak ? can't wait...
Very nice. Can you adjust the pivot friction in case vibration causes unlatching?
Thanks. Adjusting friction would be difficult, but I can adjust the clearance between lever and release cam with a file. However, the handle and shaft are so light that I hope this won't be an issue. pudding, proof, eat etc :-)
good move! any chance you'll get back on the carbon fiber project, possibly to get it on the tarmac ?
Hi. Actually, yes. Things are beginning to move forward after a couple of years hiatus. Looking to be out next season.
Dont count rich. Plastic (PC, PMMA) screens scratch easily due fine street dust and are hence not allowed by EU law for street use, hence not street legal. Allowed for concours and racing: OK.
For windshields that's true. For side windows more is possible. But here in NL the cars older then 50 years are exempt from the yearly mot technical check. So unless you make an accident where the windshield was the problem, nobody will ever care.
I know a small company in Serbia which made a new windshield for our truck , wasnt expensive . Ive just checked they are still in business. With cars I would rather go with that option . Anyway , you did a great job!
Love it! Go Julia :))
Thank you.
Why pneumatic gear shift do the Auto Down Lift, when solution?
What a tipe of lathe?
Only problem using poly for windscreen is that it scratches extremely easy. first time you use wipers in the rain it will scratch so badly you cannot see clearly through it.
I don't plan to drive in the rain :-) Poly isn't that bad. New wipers and a clean screen for the MOT will not be an issue.
Wow. Też mnie to czeka.
That is some modifications I would be worried about moving a sticker
That's how it starts, you move a sticker and then, suddenly, you are removing the body :-)
@@lotuselansteve I know just having a bit of fun When I was a very lad in 1976 I brought a 1971 k reg lotuselan sprint have it today
@@TheNigel55 I have had my '67 SE baby since around 1974 (when I was 21) so a similar time. Not a lot of the original car left now, though 🙂
may i ask how did u trim it? what tools you are using? thanks
Hi. A fine toothed jigsaw, then trimmed off the melted swarf with a knife and tidied up the edge with a file.
Great to see you working on the Elan, any chance of an update on Pistonheads? You are missed.
Let see how it goes..... And he is still struggle hard to finish the project....
how much does it weigh? to compare with glass
I guess something about half the weight of glass.
What thickness poly did you use?
can i ask if how big is the tank used?
OMG - this is incredible! I have fantasized about building a modern day Broadspeed Elan, but his is so much more. I’m confused though by the gearbox setup… is that some kind of SMG type arrangement?
Hi. The gearbox is an Elite 6 speed Sequential unit. I will be posting an update soon.
Is this for a UK road legal vehicle? I see very conflicting info about this topic, ie if you can or cannot (i'm hoping i can). It meets the main criteria i'd say of not shattering in accident, but the MOT does say glass with no other mention of alternative. Just need the right MOT tester who agrees?
My MOT tester said that as long as the wipers work then there is no problem with poly. MUCH safer than glass and around 250 times as strong with regard to shatter resistance.
nice little piece of tool you got yourself here Steve, hopefully playing with it won't take you too much out of the fastest elan on the planet, still looking forward to see that one on the tarmac...
Hi. Yes, it is a nice piece of kit, even better now that it is square :-) I have finally started back on the car after a 2 year hiatus, but the last 10% takes 90% of the time :-)
should not the rear lower corner stick out a bit, to be looking more original ?
Damn, you are right, I had better rectify that at once.
This guys listens to classic music while making experiments with a model miata. What a savage
I'm researching my options to make a new windshield for a 1968 Mark Twain 14 foot fiberglass runabout. It looks to me from what I have seen is the best approach is to create the form you want your acrylic/polycarbonate to assume, position it, gradually heat your oven, hold the temperature high enough for the plastic to fully drape over the form, then SLOWLY let the oven cool. I see so many cases where people are pulling their plastic sheet out of the oven into the cooler surrounding air and immediately the edges of the plastic begin to cool and deform the sheet, making it difficult to work with. This did not appear to happen here at all. Well done and thank you for the education!
Bad Chad should review this n finish a project👏👏👏
Hi Steve, what is that red material in the oven?
Hi. Felt.
tnx :)
Bad Chad needs to see this video lol
He will still not finish any thing anyway
The whole thing appears to be made from drillium.
I had no idea that polycarbonate needs drying, that's good to know.
Yes, it is very important to dry out both the poly and mould before the poly reaches its sagging temperature otherwise there is a risk of bubbles forming.
why 7 and 1/2 hours?
It was when I would finish breakfast the following day :-) Probably longer than necessary but no harm in extra time to dry the wood.
Nice to see that your still alive, had us worried over at the forum.
Cool, i'm thinking of making a poly windscreen too, which type of oven you using mate?
A home made unit (1.8m x 1.8m x 0.9m) and a digital controller so the temperature can be ramped up at whatever degrees/minute are required for the resin being used in the prepreg carbon. The controller also allows for any temp to be maintained for any length of time. The heat is provided by an old domestic oven element and fan.
Hi Steve, I have a Treyrx 1000 SXS and I’m going to put on my own polycarbonate windshield and roof. My question for you, would you put a short video on forming the windshield using a green dye or maybe Acrylic paint ? I was wondering if the water blemishes could be use to put color where you want. Thanks,Brian
