2022 Grumman Mallard Kimberley Safari
It's 2022, many years after P.G Taylor's dream of running flying boat expeditions had passed. But today, we are igniting that fire again, taking groups of people through the untouched Kimberley region of Western Australia on a journey in a classic flying boat, the Turboprop Grumman Mallard operated by Paspaley Aviation.
Starting in Broome, the group travel to Kuri Bay Pearl Farm, Kimberley Coastal Camp, Berkeley River Lodge, and finishing their 5 night, 4 day safari in Darwin, Northern Territory.

Valley Approach and Water Landing
Переглядів 9382 роки тому
Kuri Bay is a small bay exposed to winds from both the east and west. Normally, seasonal winds aren’t enough to stop us landing outside the bay, however when strong winds exist, use of the small bay area which is surrounded by high terrain is a pilots only option. The valley approach allows pilots to have a go around available to them, approaches into the bay are forbidden due to the single eng...

360 Mallard Mooring Pickup viewed from Head Mount!
Переглядів 5303 роки тому
One of the most unique aspects of flying the Mallard is entering the nose bay from under the copilot instrument panel in the cockpit, and popping up out in front of the two PT6 engines roaring away in beta as you approach a mooring. I have captured what it is like to do this amazing manoeuvre including a water landing beforehand, with a 360 camera on a head mount!

How to Beach a Turbine Grumman Mallard

Watch as we beach one of our 1947 Turbine Grumman Mallard at nearby Rankin Point. The use of Beta and Reverse on the PT6A-34 engine helps us back the plane on the beach. Pitch locks on the props keep the props locked in the reverse position helping us move away from the beach easily.

Hi from France! I got my seaplane rating 3 years ago and have been flying PA18 and Cessna 185 amphibians. Yesterday I finally got to try a Lake Buccaneer, and watching your video was really useful during my preparation. My instructor told me to leave the flaps down for a water takeoff… I notice you retract them initially until the first rise, and then extend them. Any particular reason? Really enjoying your channel. Thanks!

That is brilliant. What a great initiative. The fact that you have made this of your own bat says a lot about the team at Paspaley aviation. Well done 👍🇦🇺

The camera angles and editing of this flight lesson make it super easy to understand and follow what is going on. Thank you for this! I am currently considering getting a seaplane for myself (Aero Adventure Aventura II, to be precise), so this lesson is very valuable!

Oh this is brilliant and beautiful-thanks so much! You hit on two of my favorite things here: Flying boats, and a treasured bit of family history; way back in early 1976, my dear old dad started flight operations across the Northern outback for JAARS, operating out of Darwin in a Cessna 210, not long after Cyclone Tracy flattened the place. This brings back very happy childhood memories of living in Berrimah and listening for him to arrive home at the end of those long days. How I would have loved to share this with him! Sadly, we lost him to cancer in 2020, but after not having thought of it for 40 years, I suddenly heard again clear as a bell, Darwin tower on the extra radio we had at home, saying “Mike Juliet Delta, you are cleared for landing”.

Excellent training video! Interesting how rougher water ie: hitting wave crests can easily begin to induce porpoise… instructor saying to catch it with a little forward pressure on the yoke… Interesting aileron position during step taxiing…looks like you re creating drag against the direction of turn in order not to plant the inner sponson or prevent unwelcome roll during the step taxi turn? I wonder how it handles in rougher conditions…. What about sloshing water in the airframe? Automatic bilge pump takes care of this? Hmmm Cheers
