Thank you, very informative!
Did he drop the Simpsons theme in there?
Where do you buy your cotton?
+5 for background Baroque nudity! 🙂
Great video, very helpful
Good video and info
The treble clef for octave shows an A not a G, example at 19:19 in the video 😉 otherwise great information presented here 👍
Very helpful !
That helped a lot. Thanks ✌️
Love the instrument and I love cats. Please try another metaphor brother.
I'm interested in buying an electric Hurdy Gurdy... more to use w/ elfx pedals and vocoder etc. How hard is the flywheel on the strings and for electric Hurdy Gurdys are there flywheel materials and string materials (+ maybe lube) that can extend the life. Like instruments I'm into cars though know next to nothing about the engineering / maintenance for both. Like a fluoro metallic purple restomod Mazda 808/RX-3 wagon Wankel engwnined masterpiece why don't Hurdy Gurdys have more that one rotor (at least stock)?
How about F/Bb Tuning? It would be G/C but moved down a whole step.
Thank you for this. I'm a beginner gurdy player. I am confused about something - when you talk about C/G tuning, the strings are both tuned to Gs and you are talking about the keyboard being a "C" keyboard. Similarly, when you talk about G/D tuning, the strings are both tuned to Ds and you are talking about the keyboard being a "G" keyboard. I don't understand this. A piano keyboard is a piano keyboard - we don't have any concept of a "C" keyboard or a "G" keyboard. Could you help me to understand this, please? Thank you!
Yes exactly! Although they start on an open 'g' note, it's a c scale
Open G string, note the third button is a C. So lowest open string is G, the top button is also a G, but it is a C scale with a few notes above and below the Cs... that's how I think about it as a guitar/keys player 😊✌️
Hi there: Could you discuss left hand(Melody hand) finger positioning for the pegs please?
What are these small strings next to the trompette strings are they more drone strings or more melody strings
Those are sympathetic strings Cheers
Dislike twice huh?
Brilliant, finally I understand what this is. Thanks!
Looks like I will be custom making an adjustable leather strap for my new gurdy.
which sound string you used aLower G and D and higher B and E let me know
I want this ensturment
i want to make a hurdy gurdy (because where i'm from its either really difficult to get or too expensive), i love the trumpette sound but didn't get how it works, so thank you!!
it's activated by how you crank the wheel , with your cranking hand.
I wonder how a bass gurdy would sound, like, with only 3rd and 2nd octaves for melody/drones
Haha, nice video. Thanks I'll be grabbing a Ukulele strap for my new gurdy.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I'm not a musician, but rather looking at the Hurdy Gurdy from the mechanical "How does it work?" POV, and this really helped my understand. Love the sounds it makes. My mind if boggled at how you can keep all the actions straight.
Thanks for showing the sound when cotton goes bad... exactly what I was wondering about
You are so wonderful! I’m very grateful that I got my hurdy from you!!!
Thanks for the kind comment :)
You make it look simple and straightforward, as well as pointing out all the pitfalls to watch for. Excellent demonstration.
Thanks for the kind comments :)
Thanks for keeping it simple and explaining it well, very hard to find a good gurdy instructional video, cheers man you just made my day, now off to practice this some more 👍👍
Thanks Tony!
Very interesting! Great design.
Great, that answered my question, how hard should the string rest on the wheel. :o)
George. you are building a symphonie for me, but I have zero musical background and the one thing that would help people in my boat would be music. There is precious little of that online now. And I don't mean the kind with music notes and lines. I mean the kind with numbers any lump can follow. HAHAHA. Need more of that from simple to more complex
Hi Mitch! We include a lesson book which uses a play by number system, so you can get going right away
@@hurdygurdyworld8674 Great, I knew about the book in the order, but wasn't sure what was in it. That'll work for me.
Have been enjoying these brother! Well produced and entertaining. Hope to get my hands on one Of your instruments in the coming year! I think the Handpans and Rav I play would sound fantastic with hurdy gurdy! Stay well 🎶🙏🌱
Thank you for this
Do you also need a strap for the Symphonie?
ideally yes, it's more comfortable to play with one
Fantastic lesson. Thanks George for the scientific notation too. God bless you ...
I have been looking at gurdies for months with an eye to buying. I had already decided on an Altarwind, but this video has made me feel much better about spending my money. I can see the fine detail put in to building this gurdy and it's impressive. I am today, just waiting for your store to open, [i'm central time zone] and I was looking hard at the moncur but have finally settled on The 'Madeline'. Money is not the decider, the early medieval design and your enhancements struck a chord. :o)
Thanks George. Great info.
Thanks George, this is helping me for sure.
George, the trompette buzz is the hardest thing for me to understand, probably because my Gurdy hasn't been ordered yet. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush kind of thing. So, is the dog activated from change in speed of the crank, or the force you use at that instant?
Hi Mitch! A little of each. If you crank nice & steady & even, it won't buzz. It's subtle little gyrations of your cranking hand that makes it buzz. The action of it is also adjustable, so you can make really super sensitive (requiring the slightest of effort to make it buzz) or go the other direction.
Great tutorial, thanks for your effort on that topic! -Flo
Dislike... twice! Genius!
Love that LOW C
Thanks for the heads up, I was going to break off a peg for sure. Any suggestions for a tuner you can't find the sweet spot. It is either too tight or unwinds, mainly on the drones.
Thanks George.
Nice video ! One question werre can i buy a hurdy gurdy ?
we make them, you can check out our work at www.altarwind.com
Sébastien, Did you get one?
tha video quality is really awefull, your sheets are ok.... why is that?
