Random videos I create that are probably not worth your time, but you are going to watch them anyway.
Is The Fuji GW690 Medium Format Rangefinder Just a Texas-sized Leica M3?
The legendary Fuji GW690 has been described as a "The Texas Leica", but I think it is more akin to a Texas Yashica.

In this short film I try to load some 400 speed film into a Minox B spy camera from the 1960s. I think this might wind up being a great easy to carry point and shot camera. I got the film from bluemooncamera.com. Like always, they have no idea I am making this video, I just think the camera is cool and needed some film for it

That app sounds uselessly arcane. Just show me how long the shutter was open. That's all I need to know.
Great video! You mentioned doing a follow up but it's been a while. How are the results from the minox? Do you have a microscope to view them?
I caught your sleigh of hand loading the film but hey,I can keep a secret.
How does it charge? Does this camera have a power source?
It does not have a battery- the meter has a sensor that doesn’t need one. Selenium, if I remember correctly. Which means there’s a pretty good chance that the meter is probably off and you might want to use an external meter to set the exposures.
Hello! I was wondering if this monitor and with the Leica Sl, that it works in "stills" mode or only in video mode on the Leica SL?
Would have been a good video without the stupid music
Actually, while they’re about the same size, it actually uses 357 silver oxide batteries which have an ever so slightly higher voltage. You can use LR-44 but the light meter might not work as well as it could and/or your batteries might not last as long as the silver oxide will.
They never had a f2.0 aperture, would be nice though !
Old school, here. I can attest that it's a lot cheaper if one shoots black and white and does one's own darkroom work
Does it auto stop after advancing each exposure? Is it multiple cranks per exposure and you look at the exposure counter to know when its advanced?
It stops when advancing to the next frame, but it does take more than one crank of the film advance lever.
3:05 something I did because my solenoid meter WAS working, but it wasn't accurate. What I did was use a light meter (or digital camera etc) and find what the exposure should be. So let's say I'm pointing at a tree and I'm using 400 speed film in the Minox (which has a fixed aperture of 3.5). Let's say my digital camera reads that tree for 500th of a second at f/3.5, 400 iso. I now don't worry about setting the Minox to 400 ASA but only to make sure that when I aim it at the tree, the needle on the minox is reading 1/500th of a second. Neat little trick. (I haven't developed a roll yet since I did that trick LOL... so take it with a grain of salt. Can't see why it wouldn't work though. Unless the solenoid fails in an exponential way, where maybe super intense light or super low light will still be out of wack?? who knows. I think it's better than just setting it to the ASA though, unless you know your solenoid meter is working accurately).
That’s good advice. I going to try that with mine the next time I take it out.
I just found a minox b camera in my dad's stuff. Did you ever post the video where you took pix? Who develops the film for this camera?
I did not do the other video, maybe this spring. You can get the film developed at Blue Moon Camera and Machine (bluemooncamera.com). They even sell film.
I got one too. The description in the video is correct. It will give satisfactory results for a hobbyist to see if his old cameras are somewhat accurate.
Good day to you 😭 love ut
😢arms in the way ?
I had their album (Cassette) "Green thoughts" years ago. Smithereens was a good band in my opinion. House we used to live in, a girl like you, and drown in my own tears, were among my favorite songs by them. Be nice if they had a reunion. 🎙🎸🎶🎵🎼🎼🎼🎼
Yeah, got myself a PhotoPlug and the app just to take some measurings, the disappointing part is that their app leads to belive it will measure up to 1/4000, but not really. Frankly they should give a good update on the app, or at least make it open source for those who'd like to contribute to such project. Say if you got an old camera and want to find out the ballpark to where the shutter speed is after all the years, it's a rare option. Lastly, instead of having to attach a light sensor, it would've been nice it the app could use the phone's camera instead or as an option.
I agree. If the app would use the camera phone would be great.
Thanks to people like you👏👏…UA-cam has everything 👍
Thanks
I tried that app. and I couldn't get on with it, so I decided to put a film in a camera that I knew worked and fired off a shot of a Kodak grey card and grey scale. Removed the film and loaded into the camera that I wanted to test, wound the film past the previous shot then fired of test shots of same grey card and grey scale at all shutter speeds with corresponding apertures. The comparison of grey scale patches to the first shot will indicate any degree of error in 1/3 stops - after development of the film. Under my enlarger I used an enlarging meter with 1/100 stop sensitivity to measure densities. I'm thinking of using my Canon 5Diis' sensor to do similar for my Hasselblad lenses using lightroom to compare densities.
That’s an excellent idea. A lot of work, but worth the effort. Thanks for sharing.
Actually good with some mistakes, cus it makes you more aware or details, hehe. Great tutorial!
Thanks
texas leica were the g690 or gl690 with interchangeable lenses.
they're all Texas Leicas buddy.
The D represents the best of the knob wind Yashicas. The more "advanced" series is the crank wind. I have both, but prefer the D because its is lighter and has an accessory shoe on the left side, which lets me place a small light meter in it (or a flash gun, though I seldom use flash). The crank series does not have this shoe, but instead has built-in meter, which aren't very good. It's dead only Yashica Mat LM. My F has an f2.8 viewing lens, which gives a brighter view than my LM, which is f3.2. The D also has double exposure capability, which the crank series does not. Be careful!
I use the Nikon rubber eyepiece, the Nikon DG-2 2X Eyepiece Magnifier, and the Nikon DR-3 Right-Angle Eyepiece Viewer on my Nikon SLR cameras and on my Fuji medium rangefinder cameras.
Great video. I love this camera. What type of rubber eyepiece (viewfinder) is that? I would like to buy one for my GW690, but I can't find one that fit.
I don’t know - it was on the camera when I bought it and I haven’t tried to take it off out of fear of breaking it.
IIRC the eyepiece thread is compatible with Nikon F (found googling that FM/FE/FA). Nice video! I agree, and made the decision in 2014 before increases of everything that this was a good camera bang/buck. IMO on paper the Mamiya 7 and GF670 better it for travel, but it's a lot of 6x9 frames with the cost difference!
Does the counter set automatically?
I believe it does. The manual doesn’t even mention the counter when loading film. Probably why I forgot to mention it in the video. Thanks for the comment.
@@joeheptn I ended up just clicking it 50 times until it was close.
You have to advance the camera with no film loaded until the red spot is opposite the index mark. No need to release the shutter each time when doing this. The dial then counts upwards the number of frames taken.
@@richardbrown1189 Thanks for the advice. I have only shot 1 and half rolls through mine - still learning about it and info like this is good to know.
Thanks for this! I recently acquired my late grandfathers Minox and am excited to use it.
Just got mine in the mail. Still struggling to get an actual reading instead of a line that looks like a square waveform going wild. Thinking mine might be broken
I hope you figure it out! Good luck!
Thank you dear❤
Good video

Minox. Made in Germany
Invented by an Estonian, first made in Latvia, later in Germany. I think Leica own them now.
thanks for this - i haven't used mine in a long time and when i recently pulled it off the shelf for a project, I ruined a roll of film because I'd forgotten how to load it. I have a Rollei TLR that I use a lot more often and had tried to load the bronica up in that same way. Glad I found your video before trying again!
I hope the pictures turn out great!
Zensa the sister of Sensa and mother of Cenza and grandmother of Zenza.
I am the lucky owner of a Leica IIIf as well and use it quite often for b&w only. It's equipped with an Elmar 5cm f3.5 and I got the Elmar 3.5cm as well that performs better on street photography. They are pretty good lenses, however, mounting the filters on these lenses is a pain because then, you can't easily access to the aperture ring
Cool. I am looking into the polarizing filter Leitz made for that camera- it’s an interesting contraption. When the weather breaks, I’ll do a video for it.
5:20 so for the first shot it doesn’t give you the “cuchunk” sound? It just fully stops and then does that camera breaking sound for the rest of the shots?
Right. I think the "cuchunk" sound is from the mirror being reset into position for the next shot and when loading it was already reset from the last shot taken with the previous roll of film. That's my working theory at least. I haven't shot enough rolls to know for sure.
@@joeheptn just shot my first roll with my S2 and quickly learned it can in fact fire with the dark slide in. I made this mistake twice but still got 10 good photos. Gonna send them out go get developed tomorrow!
That’s good to know. I’ve only ran o e roll through mine so far. I have an ETRsi and one of my big hang ups with it is forgetting to take the dark slide out to take a picture.
Can I upgrade the 4g iMac with wireless and bluetoth. And a blue raydvd player
Lost me with "... keep your mouth shut" . . . not a way to endear viewers. P.S. Ever wonder why you get so few views and subscribers. Get smart.
I haven't used my Yashica D for a few years. I'd like to shoot with it again. I had a vague recollection that you had to keep that button pushed in every time you winded on the film which I found to be a drag. It required a fair amount of pressure and if it was mounted to a tripod, it could potentially shift the camera's position slightly. Other than that, it's a fun camera to use. I brought it out of storage recently and noticed the shutter is sticking with some of the slow shutter speeds. B is fine though. I'll shoot some long exposures of the local creek and small waterfall as we've had so much rain here. It's been an incredibly wet winter. I'll load some Fuji Velvia 50 film and wait for an overcast day and whip out my 3 stop ND filter.
Sounds like it needs a CLA mine had issue with shutter stickiness which the CLA cleared up. I sent mine to a person Atlanta, but that was several years back so I don’t know if they are still available.
Just push the button once, then wind. Stops automatically at next frame.
@@alfredbarten4901 Oh yea I figured that out some time ago. It certainly makes life easier. Now it's a more enjoyable camera to use.
How'd the rest turn out?

Perfect & straightforward, no annoying yammering or music. Thank you!
I had a Sony 7II. You made a good choice. I’m shopping for a used SL right now. What’s your take on the overall performance? Focus speed, colors….
So far, I’m really digging the colors. With the Sony I never really felt that I got an image that was what I was envisioning when I pressed the shutter button and that hasn’t been the case with the SL. One of the lenses I traded in for the Leica was the E mount version of the Sigma lens that I paired with the Leica so I feel I can make a pretty good comparison. I always use the EVF when shooting and sometimes I have found that it appears that focus is hard to find and I wonder if the image I took is in focus, but it always is in focus. That could mean that I need to get the diopter dialed in better. Thanks for watching and good luck with the search.
Nice camera enjoy I look forward to seeing some images from it a Leica is one my wish list

there was version with an F2.0 aperture. The viewing lens was f2.8 but taking lenses were all f3.5. The later models had the same Yashinon 80mm F3.5 lens that is in the Yashica mat 124G. The early models have the Yashikor lens.
I misspoke when when describing the aperture. Being the worlds worst UA-cam photographer means those kinds of things happen.
