Cucumber taste test
After a couple of years in the US, and half a year since being in the UK for a short trip, I find myself missing things, and one of the many things are English cucumbers, so I needed something to come as close as possible in the US to match it. I am in hope, but in the Phil way, I also want to find something that is weird, wonderful, and something I want to grow again and again. Have I found them? #cucumber #tastetest #taste

    Are you sure that it's cucumber beetles that are the cause? I had the same issue. Those spots appeared on my leaves after a couple of days of very heavy rainfall. It looks like downy mildew. I quickly got a copper-based fungicide, cut off all the spotty leaves, and sprayed the product on the tops and undersides of the leaves. It's been a week now. The plants are still alive and new little leaves are growing. Some leaves are getting spotty again, so it's time to reapply the fungicide. The instructions say to apply every five to seven days, so I guess I'm due. I also applied the product to my squash leaves that were suffering from the same thing in addition to powdery mildew, and also to my tomato leaves which were showing severe signs of blight. Like the cucumbers, they're all surprisingly still alive. Last week I thought I would lose everything in a flash. I wanted to go organic and not use any products, but this situation left me no choice. I'm very thankful I discovered the fungicide. Good luck!

    There is a consequence, for not using pesticide, and, for using pesticide. When I started to learn how to grow, I chose to not use pesticide with my plants, so my plants eventually got damaged. Sometimes in life we only have 1 opportunity to do something, and if we fail well this when we can lose something that is important to us. In my opinion I think the consequence is worse, for not using pesticide.

    • @parkerlings
      @parkerlings 16 днів тому

      It seems that I may have it under control at the moment (we made a natural liquid solution), however, while I understand pesticides may be useful in certain circumstances, I do try not to have to use anything unnecessary and definitely not anything that is not natural. This is my first year dealing with these beetles, so while extremely annoying, it is a moment for me to learn, so I will have the knowledge of what to look for and how to deal with things if the issue continues in 2025. Things like squash beetles are so much easier to deal with. I tell you, I was fine with the cicadas coming for the first time for me, but now they've gone, I really can see why people are not such fans of them. I have some more cucumber and courgette seeds started and hope I may get a little produce in the final couple of weeks before first frost. Wish me luck.

      @@parkerlings What happened to me was I grew strawberry plants, but it never got to the point of producing fruit. Because I made mistakes, and they were bad mistakes. The mistakes I made ended up me losing my strawberry plants. Currently I am trying to solve one of the problems I had, and I am finding it to be a pain in my a$$. Space is something I do not have too much of, and I am working on trying to buy my own property. My plants were eventually damaged when I left it outside, and it is because I chose to not use pesticide, so by me making this choice it ended costing the lives of all my plants! In other words I no longer have anymore plants! I eventually learned bugs can either be good, or bad, for plants. I am not concerned too much anymore with bugs, or animals wanting to eat my plants, but I do have other concerns. Good luck!

      Hi, thanks for your comment, it's good to hear about gardeners in different locations. Sadly not everything works for everyone. For me, I now have 11, and the originals are still in pretty much perfect condition (cleaned after full use). I start my seeds under lights indoors, and eventually take them in and out. I am near Chicago however, so while we have some extremes in winter and summer, they are not like Texas, Arizona, Florida, etc. I am using some of the black plastic trays (new and up to 2 years) and this year I have disposed of 3 already and have at least 2 more to dispose of once I'm done with them shortly. To be honest, I have just 2 issues with them. Firstly, for starting anything like a cucumber or courgette, you want to get the 16 cell unit which are a better size for them, and the other being the lack of a lid, though I have brought this up with them and say that they are in the process of designing something as they've had a lot of feedback on it. I bought a couple for my mum in England and she lives it, however if course England isn't known for it's hot weather. I really do appreciate your feedback on this product and having watched my video.

    • @parkerlings
      @parkerlings 5 місяців тому

      I was there fairly early and the queue was long, however it was badly planned. There was one line for all application types, no organisation at all. Luckily I heard some people talking about getting through, so within around 1 hour to get in for the first queue, though by the time I got out, the queue was well over double the length. There are further checks a and queue inside, followed by another building and a queue there for further checks, but they were much quicker. Word of advice is to keep asking where to go and have your papers ready at all times.

    I tried these Burpee silicon trays (36 and the XL) when they first came out. Unfortunately, if starting seeds outdoors in south Florida, they'll last just one year. The soft silicon bottoms were fine but the clear/white hard plastic tops all started to deteriorate and crumble off when picking up the trays. I've been using the "cheap" black plastic pots for many years. Burpee might try using black plastic or treat the clear plastic with UV protection. I imagine they would work fine if starting seeds indoors.

    I used these last year. I got my 16 XL Cell packs, on sale, at Tractor Supply. What I don't like is it doesn't come with a clear plastic dome, like other cell packs do!! I prefer to bottom water seedlings, which you mentioned. However, you have to either remove the whole cell tray, or leave a cell empty, to add water!! Give us a clear dome, and a lip to add water, and you have a hit right here!!

    • @parkerlings
      @parkerlings 7 місяців тому

      I have to agree on the dome issue, it was a tad odd not to get one. For watering, a hole in the center, or a simple spout would be good. I just use an indoor watering can to refill and just lift one side up. I have enjoyed using them and did get more for this year.

    Hi, I'm out doing research, and you've got me checking my pump for a clean return. The ball valve seized on me, so in my last search for answers to resolving this, I found out that USDA only supports stainless steel for food-grade metals, not brass. But the parts on the tubes connecting to both ends of that ball valve are brass, not stainless. So that brass is rusting. I clean my machine EVERY use. So I was shocked to see what I found when I took the ball valve off. All that rust and gunk building up around that ball valve was nasty and has me concerned about how healthy it is when it's opened and all that gunk is pulled back into the chamber? Have you checked that, too? I realize this video is almost a year old, but I wanted to know if you have experienced this.

    The edible part around the seeds was a slimy texture and not a pleasure on the palate. They were okay, but nothing to write home about.

    Yummy! I've seen these at Christmas with a red and green swirl, too. I suppose you can make any color combination for any season.

    I wonder what it would taste like with brown sugar, or half brown, half white sugar? Have you ever tried that? Also, you might want to try parchment paper on the bottom of the pan to avoid the bread sticking at the end.

    They remind me of the hill that Jack Skellington walked on in Nightmare before Christmas. Well done!

    Haha! I must admit, the plant is beautiful, but I really can't understand why anyone would bother with it. Is there a particular way to cook it or did we do something wrong with our growing and harvesting?

    Haha, I thought you were going to talk about your Phil's One tomato. Perhaps a future video.

    I love it that your nails are dirty, the sign of a true gardener! Thanks for the video.

      Glad you enjoyed it. I cannot understand how so many have shiny fingers after being in the soil ;)
