Paris 2024 Review of Team Jamaica Performance at #ParisOlympics #JOA #JAAA #TrackAndField
The Paris Olympics ended with Jamaica not reaching the 100 medal mark having earned 6 medals from track and field. Was this the nation’s worst performance or was it the average performance at an Olympics. In this video, Coach David Riley does a review of the team’s performance and gives his own suggestion as to what the problems were and how those can be solved going forward.

I am deeply disappointed by the assessment that Jamaica's Olympic performance was deemed acceptable simply because we secured six medals. Hearing this from a key member of Jamaica's track and field management organization leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. When evaluating performance, we must compare our actual medal count to the potential we could have achieved if the team had performed at its peak. We should closely examine and discuss the barriers that prevented us from meeting the projections based on the athletes' abilities. It is unhelpful for those knowledgeable about track and field to sugarcoat the results and gloss over our performance. Instead, we must take a deep dive into the root causes to truly understand what went wrong.

@@clarendonlube Please stop confusing Mr Riley's role. He is in no way a key member of Jamaica's track and Field management association (whatever that means). The Olympics is the responsibility of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA) and they are supplied with athletes and officials for track and Field from the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA). Mr Riley does not serve as an executive member or decision maker for neither of these organizations especially in relation to the Olympic Team. He has no direct nor indirect responsibility for the management of this team. Do not believe what is being said out there by persons who should know better.

Well the future should be better, in women sprinting shelly should be better next year, by now she must know that the hill training is not for athletes her age and that her fast time were because of shoe improvements nothing else. Shericka will have healed properly and her physical condition and internal support sytem will be back to normal. Kishane ackera and tia will be more experienced next year. There will also be other young female talent too. The jaaa needs to get some throw coaches to do workshops with our coaches and young local talent. Obviously we lack quality throw coaches. Jaaa need to serioualy look into getting coaches for discuss ánd shot putt in an effort to improve our existing coaches. A policy need to be created for extreme talent emerging from the ncaa competition. The standard should be at least in the top 5 world leading performances. My suggestion is for these athletes be allowed to rest and recuperate after the ncaa therefore not competing in national trials however they would resume training to maintain the level they were at the ncaa. Based on performances in 2 diamond league leading to the championships would determine their inclusion on the national team. There is no athlete who can maintain their peak from ncaa to natl trials then to championships, impossible. This is the only way. Mckenzie long couldnt do it, nickiesha pryce couldnt do it and the 100 gold medalist julien alfred couldnt do it last year where she had too many races. To be proactive is best, and if they dont perform at the diamond league races they are left of the team but if they do they are then selected on that basis. A winwin. The jaaa need to have an assistance programme for injured high school athletes to ensure that their injuries are managed properly as the schools may not be able to properly achieve this due to a lack of adequate funding, and not understanting The nature of the injury and recovery process and parents may or may not be able to afford it.

To suggest that Shelly's fast times were solely because of shoe improvements is disrespectful to her talent and hard work. Was she the only athlete who had access to those shoes? Wouldn't other athletes have benefitted from said shoes?

It would appear that the JOA and JAAA members all need to go and do a course on leadership. Each of these two agencies need to have the right people on board - members who have the right values, character and competence. To those of us looking in, it seems that decision making is not shared and voices are not treated equally. You all need to learn to share power. Operating with empathy is missing or is not being portrayed to the athletes and the public you serve. Trust is so lacking which then affects the athletes and they become disengaged from the governing bodies. Why is service not prioritized? Who missed letting Skylar know that she had to travel on a Jamaican passport and making sure she got one from the time she gave her intention to represent the country. Once again, a Nayoka situation in another form. Are you unpaid volunteers so these things are hit and miss because of lack of time and personnel? Both organization's need to work on their communication, trust, mutual respect and support and in so doing you will see better results from our athletes. Yes, six medals are great but no one seem to be addressing why the number two nation in track and field underperformed and is glossing it over because as a small nation we garnered so many medals in field events. Talent abounds and we will bounce back but the governing bodies need to address their issues and get things right as it affects the athletes, no more evident than in this past Olympics.

While that is true I think the relay coaches need to stop taking out the better athletes out the relay just to give someone else a chance to get medal also. This mentality has costs us to lose gold three times now since Tokyo and not at all. Garbage is at the head of the stream and the only thing you do with garbage is throw it out.

The three big guns who would have bagged most of the medals were injured and had to sit out. In addition we dont have a deep pool of talent and a lot of the team consisted mostly young and very inexperienced members so couldnt really step up to fill the shoes of our injured athletes. So by that take the medal haul would be significantly impacted. By the next Olympics in 2028 probably by the World Champioships next year the team would have gained more international experience and I'm sure things will improve significantly

Mr.Riley, After watching your video and listening keenly and intently to your explanation, interpretation and understanding of the rules has enlightened me and all Jamaicans around the world of the incompetence of you a JAAA member and the entire body of the JOA and the Technical leader mourice "Willow" Wilson and his staff. These people (the technical leader and his staff) were sent to Paris to represent Jamaica and its Athletes interest and to secure and fight for what our athletes have earned both on the track and in the field. And our athletes were let down on several occasions by the lack of knowledge of the governing rules and the INCOMPETENCE of the technical leader. WORLD ATHLETICS rule 260.14 states that FOR THE PURPOSES OF MEDAL ALLOCATION TIMES ARE ONLY ROUNDED TO THE NEAREST HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND IN WHICH CASE BOTH ATHLETES TIME 9.784 AND 9.789 WOULD HAVE BEEN ROUNDED TO 9.79 SECONDS. JOA AND JAAA YOU IDIOTS FAILED KISHANE THOMPSON AND THE SAME RULE ALSO APPLY TO RASHEED BROADBELL IN THE 110M HURDLES. HE SHOULD'VE BEEN AWARDED A SILVER MEDAL. BUT INSTEAD OUR IDIOTS REPRESENTING JAMAICA'S ATHELETES AND THEIR INTERESTS WERE ASLEEP ON THE JOB. I BET MY LIFE THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED TO AN AMERICAN ATHLETE? @Technique Lab - Jamaica has a troubling habit of breaking valuable things. Many Jamaicans still look abroad for success, seeing the "white man" as the solution to our problems. This colonial mindset is a deep-rooted issue that will take generations to overcome. Unfortunately, the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAA) and the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), along with the mistrust of individual coaches, have significantly tarnished Jamaica's illustrious track and field legacy, culminating in a crisis in Paris. Congratulations to these organizations for diminishing Usain Bolt's legacy and the achievements of great athletes like Merlene Ottey and Asafa Powell. They have eroded Jamaica's world records in relays and sprints, both male and female. This is how leaders of headless, visionless, and corrupt countries leave their mark-by destroying their nation's history. When leaders lose sight of their purpose, they become the catalyst for revolution. The only way to address this problem is for the people of Jamaica to take action and remove the ineffective leaders of athletics. Jamaica, a small, so-called "independent" country, has experienced growing pains but has also achieved success, particularly in track and field. However, the current leaders clearly lack respect and vision for this legacy. It's time for revolutionary change. If we lose the one thing that brings us global respect, what do we have left?

Definitely not Jamaica's worst Olympics ever. In 1964 Jamaica didn't win any medals. In the 70s Jamaica was winning for the most 2 medals. So it must be realized this already surpases that. What happened is that since 2008 Jamaica not only went above 10 medals for the first time but was winning multiple gold medals in the same Olympics. Many thought it was just a fluke and they would return to the days of old of winning just a handful of medals without a solitary gold but Jamaica kept up performances in close proximity to that since then until now. So it's just that Jamaica is having a pre 2008 like performance. It's just that Jamaica has been spoilt with so many good perfomances since then that they expect it will always happen. Jamaica is still a pretty tiny island hitting way above it's size but sometimes not that they don't have a very solid system but sometimes people age and others still too young to replace the older ones and sometimes you're riddled by injury and all that is at the heart of Jamaica's poor perfomances.
