We are avid outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exploring our National Parks, fly fishing, camping, rock hounding, and hunting. We are blessed to live in Wyoming where we are minutes away from the great outdoors. We love to cook; sharing meals and a glass of wine with friends and family at home or on the trail. We are passionate about travel, the outdoors, and the outdoor lifestyle.
We feel many have lost their sense of adventure and are now disconnected from nature and from each other. By documenting our recipes and travel through photography and writing, we strive to compel our readers to experience new cultures and the world around them all while enjoying great food.

Our Pragmatic Travel Tool Kit

There are a lot of opinions on what makes up the "Ultimate Overland Tool Kit." Beau breaks down his thoughts on our current setup and its evolution over the years. What started as a large Craftsman toolbox has transformed into a simple canvas tool role filled with Toyota/Lexus-specific tools. We've ditched the bulk and weight of carrying nearly every tool we have in our garage tool cabinet in f...

I sense a wet mess in your future. Not the good kind
Thanks, Wouldn’t recommend Symmetry at all. They do not stand by their product. Failed to make it right after it having it in their possession for a year in total to repair. Still we are taking in water and the timbren suspension is being replaced with the proper heavy duty model by another over landing company. Good luck with your repairs and build. Safe travels
Hello, how’s the Symmetry trailer holding up? Looks brand new in this video. We were stoked with ours also, the first day. Everything went to shite quickly after that however.
Wow, we're sorry to hear that! We've had issues with doors not lining up quite right and a lot of dust getting into the compartment. I'll be adding some door gaskets in the coming weeks. The other issue was electrical, which I completely redid. Everything else has been work well.
I have a 3rd gen was looking at the borla i love the sound yours makes. Is yours a 4 cylinder or 6/8 cylinder? Wanna see if ill have the same sound
V6
Cut that pipe so the tip doesnt look so stupid.
Any extra spacers or less spacers needed when using existing holes for the front mount?
No spacers needed!
"Promo SM" ✨
I probably wouldn't carry a fencing plier, at least not in that kit, but would definately add a pair of locking pliers/mole grips and also a pair of 6" dykes... Screwdriver wise, i think that driver or a 6 in 1 is a good choice as a main, but I would add a small reversible stubby, plus a couple of small terminal screwdrivers. Socket set wise, I have about the same as you, but based around 3/8" rather than 1/2". I also have an extending/telescopic wheel lug wrench that lives with the jack ect... One thing I am not seeing is any form of tester for the electrics, which I consider essential. It would be something as basic as a 12/24v test screwdriver tester or test lamp, or a mini multimeter. I have gone the mini multimeter route, and have a cheap model that's smaller than many mobiles... Lastly, and I appreciate you probably have it outside the kit, I would think about some emergency lighting. I favour a head lamp and something like a small rechargeable magnetic work LED light to supplement it...
That is quite nice. I am just in the process of reducing my tool box in my Fiat Scudo Van. I never really needed to work on it on the trip but more for the peace of mind and to help other. For now I have scattered tool on separate pouches around the compartments in the vehicle. I will certainly try this approach all in one package. Keep it up. P.S. may I ask for dimensions of the tool bag? Looks like 10" long compartments. Asking because my tools are based on 25cm long stuff and below.
Each compartment is 11in long by 2.2in wide
I’ve always thrown in a piece of scotch brite pad & couple strips of different grade of sand paper 😎
Those are great suggestions!
Wow, you just be close to 7ft tall
6ft-6in tall!
I need an option for “walk away auto lock” . How can I do that with this unit?
Unfortunately, this is not a function with this remote start
I have the same camera and works great for the price. I mostly record footage on my rc airplanes and can attest that it takes on high g-forces without skipping a beat and the sound of wind is cool. If it was at least 1080p it would be great.
I’ve got a huge hole in my stock pipe, so I was thinking about doing this full system. Are you satisfied with it?
Yes, it was great
Nice video. What size is the rack
Size "N" - 84x54
We’re you able to reinstall your 7pin connector and oem hitch receiver?
The Dobinsons bumper does not allow for the reinstalling the OEM Class IV receiver. Dobinsons does have a Class IV receiver option, you'll need to contact them directly for details. We opted for the Curt Class 3 on our GX, although we are contemplating shifting to an OEM 4runner Class 3 since they don't sit as low. As for the 7-pin mount, I'll need to look up the part number for the mount plate you'll need purchase.
We are looking at Toyota part number 5190935011 for a receiver on our GX. Unfortunately, I am having a heck of a time finding the part number for the 7-Pin bracket
How much louder is it compared to the stock system
I'd say it is 25-30% louder outside at high revs (above 3k) otherwise, no major difference. That said, it does tend to drone and resonate in the vehicle stating at 2500RPM and gets to the point where it is difficult to carry on a conversation at 4500RPM
With this on the factory cross bars, do you have problems with sagging under load? Any damage to your roof?
We never experienced any issues connecting the platform to the factory load bars.
Hi, great video! I have a 2023 luxury model with the power folding 3rd row seating. Do you know if this installation can be done with the power folding 3rd row?
It can. Although we've never done it ourselves, I know of a couple folks who have installed them in the Luxury. You'll just disconnect the wiring harness that connects to each seat.
@@LivingOverland thanks for the quick reply!
I have this same exhaust system installed on my 02 4runner 4x4, but my only issue is the exhaust system the pipe that go over the differential seems to hit the bottom of the car every time i drop in a hole or ride over bump. Do you or anybody have the same experience?
We never experienced that with ours. The routing was spot on with the factory layout. We tortured our old 4Runner without any issues with the exhaust. Sadly, we sold our 4Runner (June) three years ago, otherwise I run out and snap photos of the layout.
The M10 bolts supplied from Dobinsons don’t seem to have the same thread pitch. Where did you get you rivnuts?
I purchased them and bolts from a local vendor.
What size rivet nuts you are using?
10mm
Question, do you need to remove the tow and trailer plug adapter to only remove the bumper? I only want to remove my bumper, and reinstall a new one, not sure if I need to remove receiver or adapter as well. Thanks!
You will need to remove the factory receiver in order to install the Dobinsons rear bumper as the bumper's mounting brackets will interfere with the receiver.
Can you store a 10’ euro fly rod in this?
Yes, the upper tubes can accommodate up to a 10ft fly rod.
Btw is there any recovery points or ability to add a tow hook?
Yes, both the standard mounting brackets and the receiver version have a recovery point on each side.
Hey man, I was wondering if you could tell me the clearance the passenger side door has to the tailgate when it’s opened. I have a victory 4x4 tailgate table and I want to make sure it clears it when it’s all folded up. I reached out to dobinson to get this measurement for me and they were utterly useless. I’m hoping you can help me out. Thanks!
Unfortunately, I cannot. Pearl was rear-ended and Pearl was totaled. We are looking to replace her and can take measurements when we can
Their kit must have been simpflied. You no longer need to attach anything to the obd2 connector and no removal of fuses. There are two connection points that you plug in. And that's too much trim to be removed, you only need to remove the bottom trim on the steering column and PULL BACK not remove the left trim above the obd2 outlet. Super easy instal and programing. Mine is also a 2016 460
With all the holes in the back of that car from those unnecessarily compmcaued seats, you guys couldn’t find existing holes to use instead of making people drill through the floor of their luxury SUV?
We addressed your concerns in this update video: ua-cam.com/users/shortsU7-cK9Chtv0?feature=share
Ain’t nothing but a Mole Hill for a Mountain Climber. 🤣👍
$2000 for a bumper that doesn't even fit its not worth it
What’s the suspension setup?
We're running the Dobinsons heavy coils and nitrogen-charged shocks/struts
What kind of landing pad did you have to use for the towers? Also, did you have to remove the factory rails?
does the box sit flush with the 2nd row seats?
Very nice rig and great install video. The channel is 100% my kind of stuff. I'm in to see what you do next.
Thank you, I appreciate the feedback
Thanks for making this video! I have been contemplating doing one of these in my LX570. Wanted to see roughly what I was getting into first. Awesome.
I am glad we could help!
Thanks
I don't think you did this correctly. The Dobinsons instructions show the bracket attached to the seat mounting frame using rivnut/plus-nuts. This saves drilling through the body and needing someone underneath. Takes only 10 minutes to install the rivnuts. See page 24 for Prado install. Worked perfectly on mine. cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0029/2795/1981/files/Dobinsons_drawer_install_guide.pdf?v=1621527796
Thanks for the suggestion. I had discussed this option with Dobinsons USA and the decision was made to install as we have shown. Note that there are other differences between the Prado 150 and the GX 460 and it was this fitment difference that drove us to install it this way.
@@LivingOverland I have a 2019 GX460 without rear air and the kit installed perfect using the Rivnuts. Seems way easier than going through body and stronger.
Very nice setup. What did you end up using for a filler panel for the rear reverse lights?
I found some 1/8in plastic sheet to use as the filler panel. I'm still working on getting it installed and hope to have it done in the coming weeks
Is there room for the Yakima CBX 18 next to it?
It all depends on the vehicle and cross bars you are using. For us, with the N-size LockNLoad platform on out GX 460, there would be enough room.
What's all that loose metal clanging? lose inner tube?
With 250k miles, June had a lot of things that rattled, including heat shields and random bolts. It was a constant battle finding and tightening everything!
@@LivingOverland I see I was hoping that it wasn’t the nice exhaust. What do u know about flowmaster or magna flow
Both make great products. We're looking at the new Magnaflow setup for our GX
@@LivingOverland Thanks for the reply. i was curious.
I’m editing a video for my 2012 GX460 & will be uploading my version soon. There is a difference when it comes to trimming. Much respect to you for shooting and solo installing the bumper. Subscribed!
Thanks, it was an undertaking for sure!
I remember this removal!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👊🏼
Good stuff!

Great install video.
Thank you, Rob! I appreciate the feedback.
Great video with excellent detail!!
Thank you!!
HA! I sent a 911 Help Please email to Dobinson. They sent me YOUR video!! 😂😂 I have a 2012 Lexus GX460 Premium. My front wing brackets would not fit for nothing! The unit sat back from the rear door trim about 2.5 inches. This left the trim exposed and an ugly unfinished look. Now, it's all the way back, and looks fine... but the wheel hump wing caps will not fit at all. So, I have an unfinished gap. OY!!
Can you confirm they sent you the correct filler panels? I have heard of folks accidentally getting the 4Runner panels, which do not fit.
OMG! I'm having troubles!! Is yours a Base or Premium? I have third row AC. The forward wing brackets are not fitting at all.
Premium with rear air. Reach out to Dobinsons to make sure you have the right wings
@@LivingOverland Hmm. I have the same! Snooped around their web site. Looked at all options for all models. All RD80-1001s. BUT... the wing kits do have different model numbers! I have emailed them. Thanks again!!
Thanks for the great video on the install. About the rubber bumper install, exactly what holes did you drill by 1/8?
Hi Mark - Take a look at minute 18.49 - The two holes on the left side of the drawer in this frame are the two I am referencing. There are two holes on each side of the drawer.
Hello again. You don't know how helpful your video has been to me! How about the seat belts? Can you disconnect/remove them without an alarm going off constantly?
You know, we haven't even looked into this yet. The third-row seat belts stay out of the way for us and don't bother our dogs, so we haven't tried to remove them.
@@LivingOverland I'm adding a bunch of stuff, so I'm always thinking about weight. I thought, heck, all of that belt stuff has to weigh 5 - 10 lbs... so... I just removed the belt floor brackets. Then pulled the belt as far out as I could... Then Cut them (Yikes! Scary)!!! The belts then wound up in the lower assembly. "Zip"... then stopped winding! I tried to get the lower assemblies as well, but there's too much stuff in the way. Especially on the passenger side. Then removed the upper guide brackets behind where the belt went in. I have a 2012 Premium and it'll never again be a soccer mom SUV. Thanks again for a great video. I'm off to drill some holes now!
Why do you think you had to trim that one piece? Perhaps yours was for a 4Runner? Or, did they tell you to do that?
We ordered a setup for the GX 460, so I assume the wing mounts were originally designed for the Prado and there is enough of a difference to make a difference.
