Flow gently, I'll sing thee a song in thy praise My Mary's asleep by thy murmurin' stream Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream Thou stock-dove whose echo resounds through the glen 哦,你們這些在荊棘巢穴裡狂野呼嘯的黑鳥 Oh, ye wild whistling blackbirds in yon thorny den 你這綠冠田鳧,你尖叫的祖先 Thou green-crested lapwing, thy screaming forebear 哦,我責怪你不要打擾我沉睡的集市 Oh, I charge you disturb not my slumbering fair 哦,多麼高聳、可愛的阿夫頓,你鄰近的山丘 Oh, how lofty, sweet Afton, thy neighboring hills 遠處清晰可見蜿蜒的小溪 Far mark'd with the courses of clear winding rills There daily I wander as noon rises high, oh-uh My flocks and my Mary's sweet cot in my eye How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow There oft as mild ev'ning sweeps over the lea The sweet-scented birch shades my Mary and me Oh, thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides And winds by her cot where my Mary resides How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave As gathering sweet flow'rets she stems thy clear wave 輕輕地流淌,親愛的阿夫頓,在你綠色的胸罩中 Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes 溫柔地流淌,甜蜜的河流,我的歌的主題 Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays My Mary's asleep by thy murmurin' stream So flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream
Beautiful voices!
A majestic masterpiece! Thank you for sharing!
Absolutely sublime! Thank you so much for uploading!
Watching the movie "The White Cliffs of Dover" brought me here tonight! Greetings from New Jersey U.S.A.
Excellent performance.
Never heard of this composer but you did this well. Beautiful. Just did a concert of composers from the manuscripts of Alamire...including a Salve Regina from Phillipe Basiron that is georgeous and this came up. Nice to learn of this baroque-ish composer (that sounds like renaissance Stile Antico style). Thank you.
My mother used to sing this song to me when she put to sleep at age 3.
Beautifully sung and played. Judging from UA-cam, it would seem that Purcell is appreciated and played more outside England than it is in his own country. i can think of three or four venues in the UK where you might expect to hear Purcell regularly, including Glyndebourne and the Wigmore Hall, but Purcell, along with other composers from the Age of Enlightenment, are a small part of the repertoire compared with the Classical era. I think it is a great pity, as that period set standards in music, art, literature, science and architecture that we don't even come close to matching in present times.
Learned it as a piano piece when I was10, 70 years ago, mother said it was her grandmother's favorite, it is beautifully sung here.🎉
Beautiful!!
Absolutely beautiful.
su-a-ra = voice = vox (Latin) Page 172 He was asked to write a piece in which the King could perform.
But the King had a very poor voice.
*50 years later* WAS THAT THE BITE OF 87?
My elementary school had this song in music class ( lyrics is translated to chinese , I am from HK). The songbook we used in the school days opens the door to world music.
I am also from Hong Kong and I remember singing this song in grade school. Of course the word were translated into Chinese. I was amazed that how close the translation is to the original.
Amen
.,Islam is a religion that calls for the worship of the One and Only God, there is no god but Him and that Muhammad is the Messenger of God Islam is a religion that calls for tolerance and non-racism, and Islam talks about the Prophet Jesus and his mother Mary in the Qur’an , it talks about miracles that are being discovered now. You can search for that. Islam forbids immoralities that science has discovered that cause diseases and pain. Islam is suitable for people, and it is a cure for the hearts and against racism. I advise you to enter Islam before the day of judgment comes. That day you will remember that I told you that , If you embrace Islam, you will find light in your heart and you will enter heaven in sky after death.---Islam is the religion of God and makes obedience to God alone and the Messenger Muhammad is the seal of the messengers, and to be a Muslim you must act according to what came in the Qur’an and Islam makes you pure from sins that enter the fire, and obedience and worship make you righteous in this world and the hereafter and Islam says that the dead will rise from the grave on the Day of Resurrection to be held accountable or They were good or evil. If they are bad, they will enter Hellfire, and if they are good, they will enter Paradise. I advise you to read the Qur’an. You will find copies in English, you will find the light, you will find the truth.
Danke
had to look this song up after i heard it being ''tried'' to be sung by the mayor's daughter on the andy griffith show. lol
Same here! Ha ha!
They are really good!
He’s a countertenor…
Hermoso!!!
Probably the loveliest performance of this charming piece I've ever heard! Thank you so much for a sublimely beautiful 3:50 minutes😊🙏 👋 from Australia 🇦🇺
I just discovered this beautiful song by watching Pursuit to Algiers 1943 One of many Sherlock Holmes films Made with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, who also sings Lock Lomond. Also very nice
Coincidence, exact for me also. I decided to find this song during the lady at the piano sequence .with Dr Watson listening on.
Me To
Would like to also recommend watching the 1944 movie "The White Cliffs of Dover" where the song is featured in a scene being played and sung at the piano. It was after watching the movie on TCM that brought me here.
SO beautiful and now my favourite version.
Beautiful Tune to "Afton Water" which I discovered first about 10-12 years ago. Many thanks. Charlie, Aberdeen, Scotland
THANKS FOR TAKING ME HEAVEN
Hello, friends! Nice job!
My mama sang this to my two sisters and I when we were small. What a beautiful performance! Thank you so much for sharing this!
Many thanks Katherine. We love singing this beautiful melody.
The Beautiful!!! =D
Glorious! Puts the standard versions into the shade.
This is the BEST version of the song. Jo Stafford gets the words wrong! I wonder why a church quire is singing the song Burns composed in tribute to one of his illegitimate lovers?
Hi Robert - many thanks for your comments. The King’s Counterpoint is not a church choir; this recording was taken from a concert the ensemble gave in a church in Charleston, SC a few years ago, entitled America’s Music - 1640-1899 ‘Choral Music that Shaped a Country.’
This was the most fun piece in the concert!
My favorite arrangement of this traditional Christmas hymn! The minor key and the gorgeous harmony meld into a hauntingly beautiful melody which just stays with you as you go about your day. I'm going to ask our choirmaster here if we can sing this next year on Christmas Eve as a Communion hymn.
Thanks so much! Hello from Yerevan!
Beautiful arrangement and beautiful singing. Thank you so much. xxx
Lovely performance, and what a contrast to all the breathy, self-indulgent solo performances on UA-cam.
So hauntingly beautiful! My favorite carol. I like the more bare and simple version without instrumental accompaniment. It's what I imagine many choral services were like in the New World.
A poem by Robert Burns set to music.
Beautiful.
Goosebumps......so beautiful!
