What's It Like To Own A Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) - Breed Information
Yorkshire Terriers, or ‘Yorkies’ for short, are toy sized pooches that have bundles of charisma and are cute enough to get away with almost anything. They are often seen as the ultimate companion dog.
But are they all they're cracked up to be? Is there more to the Yorkie than a sweet little companion that keeps your grandma company on dark nights? Are they a good breed for first time owners and will we ever see the Staffy beaten on our leaderboard? What are the problems you might get and how do you live with a Yorkie?
Our aim is to give everyone the tools and information they need to raise a puppy or adopt a rescue dog. Helping out will be our Staffordshire Bull Terrier Freddie (a Staffie we've had since 8 weeks old) along with a whole cast of his friends.

Fallout - Which Dogs Will Help You Survive AFTER The Apocalypse?
Переглядів 2202 місяці тому
With the release of Amazon’s Fallout TV Series, based on the amazing Fallout computer games, it got me thinking about what we always seem to take with us on our adventures. From Fallout, to Mad Max, to I Am Legend we always take The Dog. Highly trained and highly specialised German Shepherds and Australian Cattle Dogs can take on anything that the new world has to throw at them. But what if we ...

How Dogs Help Our Mental Health

Looking after our mental health is becoming more and more important. With so many sources of stress on our lives, it can be hard to find ways to get through the day and find reasons to get out of bed. I truly believe that a great way to help with any mental health struggles or if you are neurodivergent is to get yourself a dog. Raising a dog or a puppy is never plain sailing, but the rewards, b...

    One of the best things we've done for our dogs is going to obedience schools together, so we learned the same structures and boundaries (as well as commands). Your comment about 'training the personality out' rings true, as we saw a noticeable dialling down of our first dog's character. However, she was a much better companion and a better citizen as a result. Dogs do respond positively to boundaries and rules, and every rescue we foster and adopt out gets the same routine given to the adopter. Works (almost) every time.

      @@SkoolDoggery I always tell our rescue adopters that the dogs we save need safety, love and boundaries. They aren't tragic cases that need coddling; they are dogs that need love, rules and a job to do. Dogs with these three things are the happiest and best companions.

    I agree, the attitude we have has a huge impact on how our dogs behave. It sucks that you've had that experience. I've seen the "nervous" leash wraps etc be really helpful for some people who've had others just come up to their dog and try to pet it without asking. I had a person I was working with who had an adorable little dog who was VERY uncomfortable with people. The owner had some people downright ignore her saying "no, please don't come over, he's not friendly." The leash wrap helped make those situations happen less so they could work on their training!

    I use one of those "nervous' leads/harnesses. Over the last two years, we've gotten our rescue from outright dog aggressive, to reactive, to now just nervous. Still doesn't stop some dog owners from wanting to have their dog come face to face because their dog 'is friendly'.

    Hello, We have earlier had a golden retriver and our second dog was a rhodesian ridgeback.Our ridgback passed away about 12 years ago. We have now gotten on a bit in age. What used to be a percfect match may no longer be so. I am now 64 years old and have retired. My partners is 9 years yonger than I am but she has problems with arms and shoulders. In my view, the ridgeback is still the best and the most beutiful dog in the world. But given our conditions, it may sadly no longer be the best fit. We have not yet decidede to get a new dog, but as I am now retired we have talked about it. The breeds we have discussed are, German pincher Staffordshire bullterrier Continental bulldog We are not high energy people. We will go on at least one 30-60 minutes walk each day as well as a few shorter potty breaks. In addition we will occasionally go on longer hikes. Probably several hours. If we get a new dog we would like it to be ok with our less active days but still manage to keep up on our more active days. We would like the dog to be protective and guard our house. I strongly believe that the german pincher will best fulfill that role. The main task of the dog would of course be to be a pet. Probably the staffy will be the best for that. We are a bit concerned that both the staffy and the german pincher will be a bit high in their energy level. Therefore we think that perhaps the continental bulldog is the best fit. I would appreciate your comments on most suitable breed. B.R, Anders

    • @SkoolDoggery
      @SkoolDoggery 2 місяці тому

      Hi there. I will always recommend a Staffy to everyone as they can fit most of those requirements. They seem to meet the exercise level you can provide and have some guarding tendancies. However if you want a dog that will guard your home, its always best to take on a little extra training to make sure they know when to stop being protective. For example you need to be able to tell them 'thats enough' if they bark at the postman. So it can depend on how well you can train them to work with their breed traits.

      @@SkoolDoggery What can you say about their tendency to chase wild animals? I like to handle my dogs off leash in the wild. Even if there may be wild animals around. Will that work with a staffie? It worked just fine with my earlier dogs.

    • @SkoolDoggery
      @SkoolDoggery 2 місяці тому

      They are curious about wild animals and do have a reasonably strong prey drive. We work on recall with our staffy every day incase we find ourselves in a situation like that and I’d trust him to come back, but only after several years of training.

      That’s perfect though! You’re teaching him to switch off and decompress, that’s great.

      This vid is about English Staffies, but I think AmStaffs are quite similar.

    Thank you for getting the word out about this. As a dog trainer in the US, I'm always VERY skeptical of anyone who claims they want a protection dog or a "bite dog" as some people have called it. There's a lot of misunderstanding about protection dogs.

      We see it here in the UK all the time. People wanting protection, but totally unprepared to handle what is a professional dog.

    I have a 9 month old Staffy and she is the smartest most loving dog I've ever had, everyone in the neighborhood during our walks love her too. I live in Hawaii which the Pitbull is basically the State dog so nobody here freaks out about the bully breed.

      Oh that sounds amazing. Britain is famous for bully breeds, but they still have a bad reputation with some people 🙁
