Bar Mills Merchant Row Build in HO Scale (Jenkins/Hawkins)
Watch as I build two buildings from Bar Mills limited run kit Merchants Row in HO Scale. I go into some more detail in this build than I do in other builds, so this is a good video for those new to craftsman kits.

Locomotive Stalling on Turnouts on Model Railroads - Investigation in HO Scale

In this exciting video, I test four different turnouts to investigate locomotive stalling. Locomotives are from Athearn, Broadway Limited, Bowser, and Walthers. Turnouts are: Atlas #6 Atlas #8 Peco #5 Insulfrog Peco #6 Unifrog Some conclusions: Slower speeds are more likely to stall (not surprising) Generally the six-axle locomotives had few problems (also not surprising) The Broadway Limited l...

    Even though they were expensive at the time, they gave the modeler great value with all the time spent modeling. Bob’s direction was second to none, but sadly I see you don’t agree.

    Bar Mills makes great kits! I love all the grooves to line up the components. This video is a life saver for anyone building craftsman kits, especially the Cundy Hotel. This is an exceptionally long build, and I love seeing how it was done, especially the tiny mistakes.

    Thanks! In the original rigging plan of the earlier kit versions the advice indeed is given to prepare your masts and yards with the blocks etc prior to installing the masts on the ship. Those plans also are much clearer in the follow-up of the different rigging steps 😊

    You can drill a pilot hole in the plywood through the switch machine/throw. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the shank diameter of the brad. That way you can drive in the brad all the way to the head. You might even be able to push it in. Can't say I agree with cutting off the brad's head because you also want to prevent up and down movement should your epoxy bonds beneath ever fail.

    Nice video, I was born and raised in Wooster, OH., and still live there to this day. The B&O's Wooster sub is kind of a big part of me, as a kid i got several cab rides from the fairgrounds to either frito lay or around the wye up to place that threaded gas and oil pipe, I don't remember the name, I even have a few photos of the last CSX train D955 to work Wooster.

    • @asdasx392
      @asdasx392 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for all the comments. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. I really don't know how long it took to build this. Maybe 5-10 hours per week for six weeks. Most of these kits are from mom-and-pop shops. I am pretty sure this company was just a husband/wife operation (no longer in operation). I am guessing they build one prototype and then start producing the kits. So there is not a lot of quality control. Also, they typically produce about one kit per year. South River Model Works kits are expensive but they are huge. They are also labor intensive to produce and they did not have the computer technology available today. I think the complexity of this kit really pushed their technology envelope with all the building angles. The only thing I really hated at this price point was the printed brick wall. Not trying to make excuses, but just how I see the reality of the situation. If you pay $40 for a Walthers kit and build it in four hours, is that really any better value than paying $400 for a craftsman kit and building it in 40 hours? As you stated on my Walthers warehouse, it lacks mojo. This kit has a lot of character.

    • @chrishartz2397
      @chrishartz2397 3 місяці тому

      I guess my point is this, this kit is expensive, I don’t expect perfection, but I do expect crystal clear instructions, and parts that fit and coherent. Your video shows a stunning lack of directions, not enough materials, an in some areas inferior materials..my guess’s is many people attempting to build this model would have given up and either threw it away or simply smashed it. I really like your videos..thx…chrus

  • @chrishartz2397
    @chrishartz2397 3 місяці тому

    *when you glued the tarpaper roof down with whit glue... the wrinkles had a desirable effect imitating old, really old tarpaper. I can see that being bleached nearly white from the sun, cracks everywhere, with maybe some patch gravel in places... I have some buildings I'd like to practice that effect on. 👍

    You might consider obtaining a set or two of small twist drill bits from Micro Mark or another vendor. Drilling a small pilot hole through the mounting holes on ground throw will make it easier to drive those spikes home.

      Thanks for checking in. I am doing quite well but quite busy. I took up a different hobby and have not worked on the train in quite some time. I have a half-finished FSM kit on the workbench. It's been sitting there for at least six months. Maybe this winter I will get back to it. I do not have a patreon. I do all the train stuff and videos purely as a hobby and I really don't want to have any commitments that make them feel like work so I wouldn't feel right taking money from others for it. Anyway, I already have a stack of kits to build.

      @asdasx392 that's great to hear... I was a bit worried. You hinted at possible health problems with your voice being different in a few videos. A confession... because of your videos, I made the step and purchased my first "craftsman " kit. Now, I've built nearly 20 of them... and LOVE them. Your videos inspired me to take that terrifying step of purchasing an "expensive (over plastic kits)" wooden kit. But, it's what you love in the hobby. Anyway, glad to hear you're doing ok... look forward toward new content my friend.

      Well, since you mentioned it, I will spill the beans for anyone reading this comment. I had throat cancer two years ago and lost my voice temporarily because of treatment. Enough time has passed that it no longer seems like a big deal. Once I started building the wood kits, the plastic kits just didn't look right on my layout. And I think they are similar in cost on a per-hour-build-time bases if you think about how many more hours you spend on them. Glad you took the leap.
