Homeskooler Treading Water - Play Along to "Mad Loop Friday"
Well this was a fun way to spend a Sunday night. I was to sleepy to continue watching the Bills-Lions so I decided to take a crack at this one. Looped the first minute of the "Mad Loop Friday" and let it rip (with many starts and stops and redos). Nowhere to hide playing along to Bukovac. Deep pocket, deep well. How cool are those two bridges? No drum track and no click means I really had to pay attention to everything. Really tried to do that self-mixing thing he does so well. Not dexterous enough to mess with the volume knob much in time so hitting the strings so there weren't weird spikes making notes stand out in the wrong way and really paying attention to the end of notes took about as much concentration as I could muster. 4 hours later I ended up with 4 minutes and change. Good times!

Note relationship: when a raised 5 becomes a 1 (6min/4maj 3min/1maj) featuring Fender Deluxe Reverb
Переглядів 129День тому
As a shaped based memorizer (who also has to trust his ear because I can't remember shapes or where I am in the moment in relation to the chord progression) I am always trying to find ways to visualize the fretboard so I don't have to learn it. Counterproductive, but alas I go back to the relationship between the 6min/4maj and 3min/1maj chords from time to time as a compositional device. The tr...
One rig, different guitars - featuring Fender Deluxe Reverb RI and Universal Audio Ox Box

DRRI on the the Vibrato Channel, input 1, reverb off, volume 5.5, treble 6, bass 3. Routed into the Ox Box set to a preset called 50s Twang. Reverb coming from Ox (hard panned opposite the guitar/amp) and a little from Boss RV-6. Gm6/C F/C C looped. Didn't touch any settings throughout, except I increased the amp volume to 6.5 when I did the single note stuff on the strat.

What a time to be a Cavs fan! 15-0! Big one tomorrow night. Nationally televised matchup against the Celtics. Go Cavs! More noise made featuring the Native Audio Rising Sun Tremolo. Used the effect on all 6 parts. A bunch of knob twisting and pairing it with assorted, other effects on some of the parts. These are the results.
Native Audio Rising Sun Tremolo V2 pedal sounds and sights - echoes of something

I was after a tremolo pedal and decided to give this one a try. Native Audio Rising Sun V2. Put together a loop inspired by Uncle Larry's 'Slant 6' loop. The 2 major chord (F#) makes it for me. some knobs and put together a bevy of parts. Left the amp (Fender DRRI) largely alone (bumped the volume for the single note stuff towards the end) and used the same speaker sim from the Ox Box throughou...
Most of the reverb - Fender DRRI with reverb on at least 7 for all the parts (sometimes tremolo)
Переглядів 242 місяці тому
The drill was to max or near max out the reverb from the amp on every part. Vibrato channel, volume on anywhere from 6.5 to 8 and the reverb on at least 7. I rarely put the reverb past 3 on this amp. I'm not sure much changed once I went past 5. Not a huge difference between 7 - 10 that I could ascertain. Some of the tracks had tremolo from the amp as well. All the parts were what I could get o...

At long last I re-applied my go-to pedals into a pedalboard format. For the past 2 years I've been plugging them in as I use them. Had some scrap wood in the garage and decided it was time. Spent about 60 bucks at the store buying all the right cabling to make the thing work. It is nice to have what I use all in one place again. Had some trepidation when I first put it together. Did some troubl...

Who was the first person to look to the sky for answers? What was the question? When they got the answer they were looking for, who did they try to convince? How many people had to hear the story before they believed it? Just a little tune that popped in my head coincident with the recent super blue moon (Aug 19). The next blood moon is Mar 13/14, 2025. There was.a killer harvest moon on Sep 17.

Four Provinces - The Walkmen Cover; the chords I use
Переглядів 503 місяці тому
I imagine 'Four Provinces' is the name of the bar where the narrator meets his favorite girl. He's not sure how much is there, but after a couple drinks there is some chemistry. Someday she stops showing up. What a lovely, melancholy lyric. I dig this chord progression so much, I lifted it for one of my songs 'It Ain't Easy'. Available in my little dark, dusty corner of the world-wide-web. I us...

I recently read Erik Larson's newest book - The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak, and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War. I have read most of his books. My favorite is Devil in the White City, but this one is very good. They're all good. If you are looking for a book, read Devil in the White City and you will be hooked on his storytelling and eventually find your way to this one....
Where to Begin - My Morning Jacket cover; how I play it demo
Переглядів 2214 місяці тому
A dude, a bunch of reverb and a hand full of overdubs. In the long list of great My Morning Jacket tunes this one is right in there for me (Circuital reigns supreme). This was the first song I ever heard from them via the Elizabethtown soundtrack. Made an impression. I went and saw them in early July at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. As could be expected the sound was outstanding (the sacred ge...

I was working on a cover of My Morning Jacket's 'Where to Begin' today and got distracted by this tuning, C# G# C# F# A# D#. In other words, Drop D down a 1/2 step. Came up with this in short order. Not tight by any means, but I can live with the sounds. Sounds kind of big.
Strangers - The Kinks cover; ex. of using major chord substitutions to perfection & more thoughts
Переглядів 1094 місяці тому
Remember this song in The Darjeeling Limited? Me too. Dave (writer) and Ray Davies (producer) were at the top of their game here. What a great track. 'If I live too long, I'm afraid I'll die' indeed. Relatable. I was equally inspired by Lucius's great cover of this tune. I try to expand on why major chord substitutions work so well and are a little more versatile than minor chord substitutions....

Hey man, did you make your own loop for this? I need to do a lot more of this type of exercise. Really focusing on the "self-mixing" and paying close attention to dynamics. Cheers Pat
The bass and the initial guitar track came from Tom's loop directly. I recorded it directly from UA-cam via my interface into Logic. Ya man, he's so precise. Many erased takes for sure trying to get it 'right' (such as it is). Thanks!
Sounds good Pat, and hey, if you've got a Deluxe Reverb cranked up to 8 who needs overdrive pedals?
No doubt. Thanks!
Hey, nice job my friend! Goes to show that staying in skool pays off!
For sure. Thanks for checking it out!
Great stuff! 🎸👍
Rock on!
Very cool Pat! I like the sound of that Deluxe. Cheers
Thanks man!
You said it man - Tom is a True Treasure --- So are you bro, I laughed me wang bar off😂. Great Job!
Indeed! Thanks for checking it out.
Well done, you captured many of the physical mannerisms.
Thanks for checking it out.
this is my favorite so far. not too over the top... not taking the easy references. just right
Oh man, high praise indeed. Thanks for the feedback, very appreciated! I really tried to go into it with not much of a plan as I imagine Tom goes into it with some high points he wants to hit, but for the most part is almost completely extemporaneous. I really wanted to get in a reference to CC Deville, but I blew it. In the tradition of 1-take Tommy, I had to let it go. Thanks again!
Excellent! The Cavs shirt was a great touch! ****
Love my Cavs! They are bringing me much joy this year. Thanks for checking it out!
Spectacular
Thank you kindly
Excellent! Many details captured and referenced.
Many thanks!
Awesome tone. 👍🏽 Beautiful vocs too brotha.
Thank you for checking it out. Really appreciate the kind words.
This is so spot on! 😂 If we were neighbors I’d totally bug you to jam all the time. ✊🏽
To kind. Thank you!
Nailed it esp with the stories and inflections and playing. Top 3 for me. It’s close for first in my opinion. You are there 💪💪
Trying to channel some of that Bukovac je ne sais quoi. Thank you!

OMG! . Awesome homage...made me smile...
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Really cool. At the end you expressed how I believe all the Homeskoolers feel. Nice touch
Thank you kindly. The gracious nature and generosity of the dude is astounding and greatly appreciated for sure. Thanks again!
Nice one Pat! You captured many of the Bukisms we've all come to know and love. I've been watching a bunch of these videos. Some pretty funny ones out there. Cheers man
Oh dude, DonnieChoppa's is so good. Highly entertaining. Thanks man!
Loved it. Tasty. Thank you.
Thanks for checking it out.
What are your thoughts on the pedal now after a year?
Still dig it. Compared to my other pedals that do overdrive, this one is the best at making the amp sound like more. Not much coloring of the sound, just more presence and oomph.
Do you normally run the amp/pedal at settings in the video or is there preferred setting? Great tone.
Thanks for the interest! I would say I generally default to maximizing volume over gain. I primarily play a Deluxe Reverb with volume in the 6-8 range, more treble (6 to 8), less bass (2 to 4). When I use an overdrive pedal, like the ODR-mini, I have the drive (gain) knob turned almost all the way to the left, the level (volume) most all of the way to the right and the presence (eq) knob at noon. It all depends on what sound in my head I'm trying to emulate, but I think minimizing gain helps maintain dynamics (how I hit the strings matters) and clarity. Also, allows for other pedals (reverb, delay, tremolo, etc.) to add gain subtly to signal. That's my philosophy at least. Thanks again.
Thanks again. Have you compared the pedal to an unmodified mini? Surprisingly no comparisons on UA-cam..
@@johnsaltsman7230 I haven't. The modification is supposed to cut some of the bass from the circuit.
I like it Pat. Started off with a Reggae feel and ended heavy! You going to be watching these NYC shows?
Thanks man! Yes, I'm going to catch night 3 hopefully. Thanks again!
First night was awesome!
I bet you had fun tracking this lively little jam! That pedal sounds great. Cheers Pat
Thanks dude. Got the foot tappin' a little bit. Thanks again!
Hey Pat, great song! I loved the lead part and the layered guitars were so nice. Cheers man
Thanks dude! I vacillate between 'not bad' too 'this is terrible'. Thanks for the kind words.
Haha, I know where you're coming from. I'm also highly critical of myself. It really did sound good, though.
Loved the tremolo! The harmonizing and doubling guitar parts were fantastic. Cheers Pat
Ya dude! Reverb 1a and tremolo 1b for me. Dig that sound. Thanks man!
Hey Pat, great tune! I loved the solo. I really like melodic solos like this one that you can sing. Beautiful.
Thank you kindly David!
Sounds good man! I bought my '68 DRRI in 2016 and it's probably ready for service. It sounds great, but it's noisy as hell. I usually play it on 2-3 volume, but if I try to turn it up to 5-6 the background noise is bad. Fortunately, there are several places here in Austin that work on them. Still in all, best amp ever made. Cheers Pat
I'm amazed how quiet this amp is now. Never knew that was possible. Thanks dude!
Great cover Pat! Both guitar and vocal sounded really good man.
Thanks dude! Great source material, such a tune.
this stuff is lovely 🤌
Thanks for checking it out and the kind words.
Hey man, I thought I posted a comment yesterday. This song was so good I had to watch the video twice. Also, ever try pre-cooking your bratwurst in beer? Shiner works great. Seriously, great song dude! Cheers
Thank you kindly for checking it out, twice! I'll try the beer bath. Can't go wrong! Thanks again.
It’s got a little Frank Marino vibe. ✌🏼
I've always wanted to see MMJ live. Can Jim James sing or what?! I love that album Evil Urges. Sounded great, cheers Pat.
MMJ is a force live. Really, really good. Jim is the man! Prolific dude. His solo album, Regions of Light and Sound of God is great. Thanks!
I'll check it out
Yeah Pat, that's heavy! Kind of an STP vibe. Did you listen to a click and add the drums later? I know I'm always asking about the drums but that sounded legitimate.
On the drums, kind of both. I recorded a 'scratch' track to the click. Logic has a drummer function that will 'follow' a track after some analysis, so I had it follow the scratch. Then whatever the computer comes up with can be manipulated. I got rid of the scratch and went back and re-recorded the guitars you see in the video to the drummer track.
Good stuff Pat. I really like this song and you did a great job. Ray Davies is so prolific and Kinks catalog is so deep I feel like there's probably music I still haven't heard. Wes Anderson is one of my favorite directors. The soundtrack is always so good and integral to the film. I'm sure he has a part in choosing the music. Cheers man!
For sure dude, Wes Anderson is the man. The soundtracks are always great. My favorite is the one for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Thanks!
John Gosling? played for the KINKS in the 70's I like your take away from this . Sounds great too.
Yes! That guy. Thanks for checking it out and the feedback.
Another great song Pat. George Harrison was a master of building the descending chromatic thing into chord progressions. I'm sure Tom gleaned that from the Beatles. I really liked the acoustic sounding tone you were able to get out of the SG. Did I also detect a criticism of our modern society's habit of ordering box after box? Cheers dude!
Thanks for listening and the feedback! I dig the SG, very comfortable to play. There's a little social commentary in terms of consumerism in general in the lyrical idea for sure. I could write many essays about what the box represents metaphorically. I go back and forth on delivery and where it lands on the spectrum of benefit/detriment. I'm generally skeptical, but it is so damn convenient. Thanks again for checking it out man, appreciate it.
Yeah Pat! That was a funky groove...you were definitely locked in.
Thanks dude! The struggle is real, but fun nonetheless. Thanks again.
Love this song Pat! I liked the solo and your vocal sounded great. Cheers dude
Thanks dude! I am actually a little proud of that solo as well. Simple, but a good fit I think. Thanks again!
I'm right handed as well. I thought about it this way before: If I had to wear a glove on my right hand, I could still play. Not so with the left. I guess the left has the edge on importance, but all of the best players do so much dynamically with the right hand. Great song man, I am such a sucker for harmonizing guitars. Cheers Pat
I agree with you dude. I think much of the magic is in the picking hand. The more I get into this the more I realize I should have put a lot more time and effort into my fretting hand a long time ago. I have to think too much to get the left hand to do what I want it to.

Underated SGs, love my 04 ebony board🤘
I went into the store expecting to plunk down on a '61 reissue. I wasn't bonding with it and the salesman pointed me towards this one (he said he had one and loved it). I dig it. I probably go for this one more than any of my other guitars. Very comfortable to play.
Sounds really good Pat. Custom drum sounds or is it some kind of loop?
Thanks man! Those drum sounds are from the drummer app imbedded in Logic. It has a feature where it can be set to ‘follow’ a previously recorded part. There’s little adjustments that can be made to whatever the machine comes up with. Pretty useful for getting ideas out.
Cool, I've never done much recording, but I think I'm ready to choose a DAW. Logic is Mac only, right?
Yes, Mac only now (some of the old versions were PC compatible). I don’t know a whole lot about but check out Luna. It is Universal Audio’s DAW. I think you can get into it free and then buy bundles of plug-ins if you end up liking the interface.
Yep, I've heard of Luna. Thanks dude!
Nice playing and tone! 🎸🎶👌
Thanks for checking it out and the kind words!
Nicely written song. Lovely guitar parts.
Thanks for the kind words.
Sounds pretty cool😃
Thanks for checking it out and the feedback.
Hey Pat, great song with an excellent title! I love catchy song titles that provoke thought before you've even heard the song. The POG on the intro part gave it a bit of a 12 string sound. Good job dude!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
I concur . You should be proud. Lovely, soulful and resolute.
I’ll take it, very kind of you. Thanks!
Sounds great Pat. D,G,A has to be one of the happiest sounding progressions and I love what you did with it. Cheers
Thanks man!
You're right about knobs full up on a pedal, it rarely sounds good. That sounded great though. Also, what sounds good or bad on a solo guitar can sound different in a recording mix. I've found that I usually find good settings at 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock on most pedals. Cheers Pat
Thanks dude! Agreed. That's about where my favorite setting is on this one too (10 on sub-octave, 1-2 on hi octave, 1-2 on dry).
Sounds great Pat, I'm looking forward to the song. I bought a POG years ago because Jack White uses it to such great effect, but I never could connect with it. Maybe I'll give it another try. You're right though, a piece of gear can sometimes inspire when nothing else can. That is so cool that you saw Rick and Nathaniel...I watched the video they made this morning. Nathaniel Murphy...talk about inspiring! Did you talk to those guys?
Thanks man! I saw Jack White in 2022. What a performer! His band was tight as hell. He’s never to far from some octave device. Nathaniel is a bad man. I’ve seen him in there a couple times. I didn’t get any words in. Thanks again!
Very nice Pat! That one sounds like it's ready for some lyrics. Have a great weekend man.
Thanks dude! Great weekend to you as well.
Fantastic!
Many thanks!
