Grub Damage + Fall Lawn Care
Переглядів 7193 місяці тому
Grub invasions can feel like a gardener's worst nightmare, as these tiny pests quietly devastate lawns just as summer ends. God I need help here, my story is a long one, but I've been doing tons of brutally hard work on top of spending a small fortune since last season. Long story short, I have a 1200 sq ft yard up here in the northeast, I started from nearly bare dirt after totally killing off and removing what was there. I used all the supposed "best products", I did everything by-the-book, I used Jonathan Green Black-Beauty Ultra seeds and everything grew in quite beautifully, then that unexpected heatwave in late June just melted it all!!! So is Johnathan Green Black-Beauty Ultra seeds incapable of growing a lawn that can handle a hot summer?? Do they expect you do grow in a new lawn every year it gets a little hot???? So now I'm preparing to do it all over again this fall and I'm worried to death about doing this all again FOR NOTHING!!! This time I'll be using a heat & drought seed but I haven't put any kind of weed killer down because I know that it keeps grass seeds from germinating, I have Tenacity and Sedgehammer but I'm afraid to use them also because they've killed My grass as well as my weeds, so what the hell do I do here??? Whenever I go in my yard, ITS ABSOLUTELY HEARTBREAKING!!! To think about all the money, all the unbelievably brutal back-breaking work I did just to see this terrible ugly mess, you'd never in a million years think for a second that this mess was an entire Black-Beauty Ultra planted "lawn", if that's what you want to call it. I cant take it anymore, I'm seriously considering just walking away, throwing down weed-killer just to stop my yard from getting overgrown with weeds and just not caring about having a lawn anymore 😢

    I'm a huge fan of the Bay of Fundy mulch and use it every year for weed control as plants are establishing and ground covers grow in. It's awesome because amends and add nutrients to the soil and actually decomposes into the beds rather than needing to be raked out and cleaned up in the fall in and spring. It's more expensive and it's 100% worth it! If you use a landscaping service, you don't have to let them talk you into using the using traditional (often dyed) mulch - it's easier for them, but you'll get a lot more value out of using Coast of Maine. It also feels good to use a product that's a preferred environmental choice and comes from right here in New England. Highly recommend. Thanks Domina's for carrying it! :)

    I have a planter pond on my deck, it holds 65 gallons. I'm in Minnesota, the previous 2 years I have brought my 4 goldfish indoors, this year I'm leaving them out because they stink. I purchased a floating heater that keeps a hole in the ice and I run an aerator as well. What I'm worried about is the -10 degree days we get here. Do you think it could freeze solid with those 2 measures in place? Thanks.

    • @dominasagway
      @dominasagway Рік тому

      We’ve never tested it so not quite sure. But definitely don’t use an energy efficient heater because it won’t keep up. You would need a 1200 watt heater to have any chance to keep them alive. Keep us posted, I’m curious to see what happens. Thanks!!

    I use a heated pet dish in the winter for birds to drink from. They can't bathe in it, but can drink. I put a concrete bird bath nearby and remove the frozen ice when possible as the temperature warms up during the day for the birds to bathe in it. It works for the birds in my yard.

    Northeast NY Got super cold just today! But I know temps will still come back up and down etc. Leaves dumped from the huge oaks in my yard, just put a fish net across my 7 ft x 11 ft pond. Next day a clean cut right across the pond through the net! $25 down the drain. The heron here is relentless! What to do?? I’m sick of spending money on nets that the heron easily cuts through. So today I purchased a big roll of pliable plastic construction fencing. It’s a bit harder to cut through this material. Ugh! Hope it works. I have many hiding places in the pond pvc pipes elbows etc. I have 2 caves several hiding spots etc. we’ll see. But so frustrating!

    • @dominasagway
      @dominasagway Рік тому

      It seems like you were doing all the right things to protect the fish. I think the issue is you simply need a better quality net. We deal with mink and heron all the time. We use Aquascape pond netting and have not had any issues with them cutting a new net.

    Before you go to bed set out a can of tuna, tuna removed. Add in cooking oil half way with some bacon grease or soy sauce. Dig the can into the dirt to make crawling in easier for the earwigs. They get it and can’t get out. In the morning dump them out and start again the next night. This took about 4-6 days and I greatly reduced the population without using anything to harm my animals or beneficial insects. Dog will eat the oil traps so make sure they can’t get to it. Earwigs literally destroyed my veggie garden in a week. So frustrating!!!
