Lou Projects is a sustainable building company based on the Central Coast, NSW. Our focus is to build healthy, energy efficient and sustainable homes, at an affordable price. We also want to make the building process easier for everyone involved, particularly the homeowner. We do this by working closely with our designers, engineers and suppliers to ensure a smooth build from start to finish.
We believe in building homes that are not only beautiful, enjoyable and comfortable, but also save money, water and energy. This means we build high-quality homes that are energy efficient and sustainably made with the best materials available. We work with clients who, like us, believe in creating a connection to nature, family and friends through their home. Project Update - CLT Passivhaus Dulwich Hill - HRV Installation, Wood Fibre Insulation
We've made some progress since our last video, which was the CLT installation. Now we're up to the roof being installed, the wood fibre insulation is on the walls, it's been battened out, we've done all the rough ins, the HRV unit is in, the windows and doors are in, and it's looking pretty special so far, so let's check it out and walk you through it.
What is HRV?
Often referred to as the "lungs of a Passivhaus," a heat recovery ventilation (HRV) system plays a crucial role in maintaining indoor air quality, controlling humidity levels and enhancing overall comfort.
Why use it?
All Passive Houses need a reliable mechanical ventilation system. A HRV system ensures a continuous supply of fresh air while also stabilising the indoor temperature. The HRV system goes beyond temperature control; it also filters the incoming fresh air. Basic filters capture coarse dust particles like pollen and fog, while more advanced filters target fine-medium-sized particles, including mould spores, dust, bacteria, and carbon soot. This feature is particularly beneficial for individuals with allergies.

Hey Lou, how does does construction cost stack up with using CLT compared to framed construction? I assume the labor savings wouldn't outweigh the material cost but you're obviously getting a different end result with the CLT.
Unfortunately it's hard to provide you with a clear cost comparison as the project was always designed as a CLT house and we never had the chance to price it comparably to standard frame construction. However, we can say it was about $20k in labour to install and tune up plus almost $20k in crane hire and traffic control etc. Sorry I can't help answer your question a little better...

As someone who's Newcastle based, great to finally see a local builder who takes building performance seriously. Currently working on improving the building envelope of my house and it's a pain. I miss my old house in Norway

Thanks for watching! We did try for PH but it was a little late in the mix as we had already started the project and the windows had already been ordered. It got modelled through a consultant and we applied all the detailing of the PH requirements which was looking great, however unfortunately the blower door test read of 1 ACH due to the sliding windows and doors, so we just missed out there.
It would be great to see more technical aspects of the CLT build as you move along.
