Your claims about the longevity of student oil paints is very troubling to me. I wonder what those claims are based on. Winsor and Newton have separate permanence and light fastness ratings which indicate equal performance for both the artist and Winton line for a particular color. Please explain
The pigment colors will hold up for a long time, but the paintings made from student paints will crack flake or peal sooner than professional paints because of the fillers that are in the student paints.
@@arrogantartist It feels silly for me to be poking at you like this but the idea that I’ve made a terrible mistake that will limit the life of my work at the cost of a few bucks is deeply troubling and one that I don’t want to accept. I suspect others may feel the same so I post this for how I’ve rationalized it. I would say the definition of “student” grade may be imprecise. That they aren’t all equal and I believe Winsor & Newton can be trusted with their permanence and lightfastness ratings for their Winton line. Based on that, I would very much question the accuracy of your longevity claims for Winton. It is difficult to find actual data regarding the longevity of art supplies. I would speculate that how one goes about applying the paint and then how the work are treated later have a huge impact on how long the work lasts

After your comment I thought it was time to investigate into this to see if it is still true. I had back and forth correspondence with Winsor & Newton and Royal Talens (the maker of Rembrandt oil paints). They both stated that their student grade oil paints will last just as long as the pro grade as far as cracking or pealing. The light fastness of course would depend on the pigment they use. So this is very good news. Note: They did say the biggest problem with cracking, chipping and flaking is due to low quality ground work. I have seen several paintings where the paint is falling of the canvas after 40-60 years because of the gesso breaking down. So stick with pro quality gesso or pro quality pre-gessoed canvases. Watching you paint these very foundational steps is incredibly helpful and encouraging for me! I was only given quite inattentive and ineffective instruction decades ago and the foundational basics were never covered at all, you're filling in all the gaps that made me struggle. Thank you!
This was super helpful! It has been 20yrs since I last took art instruction or did any kind of serious artistic works, and I had totally forgotten that "carbon papers" as we called them back then still existed! So far since coming back to art I've just been free-handing when I transfer pieces, and while that's a great skill, it doesn't match the ease or precision of actually using the right tools to transfer images to canvas. (also, my gosh! lightboxes have gotten small and thin in 20yrs!!!)
I hope you continue making videos! I just got back into painting after 20 years away, and I've chosen to start working with oil (as I hated doing watercolor and acrylics all those years ago). I love your style of presentation and the content you have put out so far!

Thanks for the good tips. One tip of mine is also simple. Sometimes when boxes are delivered, they are really thick cardboard. You can protect the cardboard by covering the surface with packing tape and make it waterproof. That works as well as Masonite. I like the idea of the Masterson palette boxes, but I have such a problem with getting the lids on after a painting session....they never seem to line up.
On the Masterson palette box try vaseline on the rim of the box. Some of my students have had great success with getting the lid off and on by using vaseline.
The only thing missing aside from your Username, and stache is a turtleneck sweater.
Boiled linseed oil is good to condetion the wooden pallets

Nice explanation. Before using georgian brushes, I'm using cheap brush or normal brushes in my area (SE Asia) and just for me I guess, the paint usually stick in the bristle and rarely smooth, but that brushes kinda succeed with anybody else, idk how

Mixing thoroughly wasn't needed for the demonstration.
student grade isnt god for glasing and special optic efects , student paint isnt long lasting and lightfast , it usuali stif and you need a lot of medium to work with it wich is not that grate.
There is a wide quality range of student grade paints. Some are, just as you said, very poor quality. The Winsor & Newton "Winton Oil Colours" perform very well in lightfastness, glazing, and stability. My beginning art students have been using them for many years. For more information go to the Winsor & Newton website and read their literature.
Good video. You even have tubes of paint to show it, some artists on UA-cam just explain the difference between artist and student grade without showing it. You even mention different ways a palette can be put together, depending on what price point makes sense for aspiring artists with their budget.
