    Why are they not using blocks to stop accidental rolling are the brakes in locked position? I also wonder how did they diagnose which wheel is in locked condition? is it because of heat on the wheel or any real time monitoring exists via thermo couple or infrared scanner non contact? Or is it via rpm differential with respect to other wheel / axels? Anybody please thanks in advance!

    Why are they not using ratchet after initial release with regular wrench . We are eons away from increasing productivity reducing down time also using torque wrench with preset torque setting is better way . Om I stand corrected they did use a ratchet . But there is enough space to use box socket instead of open wrench which can damage the hex nut. Also the have pneumatic jack or could be hydraulic then why not use compressed air tools. If you don’t have access to 240 volts power point to drive a compressor for tools one can use compressed air tank. Even better tap into the compressed air tank of loco which is used to actuate the brakes… well from a Mechanical engineer with 40:years experience in machine tools service in the field and commissioning huge machines . BE , mechanical, M. Tech Industrial Engg and MBA from UM . Now retired in DC having worked for Godrej and GM like companies with modesty I say. I fondly recall my basic skills of Marathi having worked in Mumbai during late 78 till 1987. Amchi Mumbai😊

    This is som scetchy $hit, almost as scetchy aas cutting off the lower half of the wheel, which is what one of the private rail companies did here in norway, with an acetylene torch😂.

    This also happened when I was in Bangalore railway station several years back, just to take some videos. Brindavan Express was crawling into SBC, but stopped halfway into the platform. So I walked up to the loco, which was a WAP-7, and they said the wheels had locked up and started ‘cutting’ (don’t know what they meant). After several minutes the train crawled very slowly to reach the end of the platform, where the service people started milling around the loco to fix the issue. I didn’t stick around to see what they’d do.

    No one is wearing safety gloves and still manual work is required. No automatic instruments for unscrewing the nut and bolt... Railway has to modernise for maintenance jobs of locomotive....

      Wearing of gloves is not necessary as the work is done on the periphery of the loco and no heavy part is being moved/lifted. Someone mentioned use of pneumatic tools, . That's not required as the work does not involve major fastening.

      @@vara1499gloves should be mandatory, it’s about worker safety policy. Also power tools are required, workers can get repetitive strain injury. You should learn from western countries, about worker safety and repetitive strain injuries.

    This is surely an easier way of dealing with a locked axle condition. However, would this work seamlessly given that axle's load is no more equally distributed between the remained axles? Doesn't this risk overheating the journal bearings or even stressing the track/infrastructure?

      I would guess it is used just to limp it into the main shop where it is going to be properly fixed. So to just get it moving, even when with restrictions like limited speed or so... By the way the 30% extra weight is by far not that much of a loading on the other axles, as is the fact they effectively deleted all the suspension, the two working axles are holding the frame via hard steel lifting inserts, so any uneven spots and the dynamic loading will become not 30% bigger, but 3x bigger than normal at the same speed.

      If the loco is not used for hauling trains, not used at higher speeds than a crawling speed, it is okay. The next trip for the loco is to crawl to the maintenance shop anyway.
