Phil MacFarlane Living My Best Life
Mexico
Приєднався 11 бер 2011
My videos are mostly sailing and mostly on my boats and mostly on my Ericson 35MKII that I bought as a kid 32 years ago. There are a few of my Mini Trans-At full carbon canting keel water ballast racing machine and quite a few of my Hobie tandem Island including California Coastal stuff on that Tupperware! I do have some videos of flying and mostly landing a Citabria aircraft. A small fabric covered acrobatic tail dragger. I might also have some clips of cycling as I've done some of that and will keep doing more till I can't. And just two clips of my wife and I racing a sand buggy on a closed track in Baja California Sur years ago now. Oh, and a little kite boarding in La Ventana Mexico.

I've upgraded the electrical system on Sail a Vie my Ericson 35 foot sailboat. This is a test of electric cooking and freezing equipment all powered by the sun.
Just a few more projects

A beautiful sail from La Ventana BCS Mexico to La Paz that almost ended in tragedy.
Sixty Days in the Baja's

People often ask me "what do you do down there". Here is a small fraction of what I did in sixty days in the Baja's, North and south as they are two different States of Mexico. Another thing people "up there" don't understand.

Thanks for the video! Very helpful. Getting ready to order some replacement parts for our Monitor. Also couldn't find any other video on-line about rebuilding these units.
at 22:00, could you pole out that jib? might make the sail less annoying.
Yes I could have done that. There are several reasons I didn't : It wasn't bothering me. It was pretty rock and rolly there so I would have stood a good chance of going over board. It's a lot of work to set up the pole if you are going to do it right, topping lift, fore guy getting the pole in position...It is a fairly narrow gap between the rocks off shore and the rocks on shore, with a pole set you are committed and that could be a bad thing. I was so happy to be at the end of my 2000 mile solo sail I didn't give a crap about the sail flogging around for twenty minutes. But yes I could have but if I was there again I would not again.
reverse eddy leaving mile rock? We got nailed with that some years ago in Spin Cup, boats a bit further offshore missed it...
Exactly the boats right ahead of us got through then the door shut took us almost an hour. Boats right behind us got it worse!
Go, Jo, go!
Glad you made it through Phil! Your sailing adventures are inspiring …
Im in SB my boat was close to where you stayed, you just came up in my feed. Been thinking of solo sailing to Mexico. Would love to talk and pick your brain. Thanks for the video
Hey sure! I'm reluctant to give out contact info here so what are some of your questions?
I enjoyed your video. All of it in my home waters. The giant gantry crane at Hunter's Point shipyard was built for one thing: mounting the great gun turrets on battleships of WW2. My uncle Ed was a shipyard foreman there until the early '70s.
Hey, thank you for that. Yes just last night I did a little research and read that that's what the crane was for. Plus when it was built it was the biggest crane in the world. I found that Hunters Point has a much longer and scarier history than I knew. Thanks for your input.
Cool video!
Good morning coffee race vid, and ya are getting good at the youtube thing...
Thanks for the ride- along
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I hope to see you at the marina or on the water. I get a hall pass Labor Day weekend. So I'll be on the boat Friday through Monday somewhere in or out of the bay weather permitting.
Nice video!!!! I hate that little point known as Cabo Falso. Every time it pushed me W or Even SW!!! untill You can tack and start making some progress.
Oh yep... The old good Baja Bash.... 70nm S ot Turtle Bay is Bahía Asunción. I likes much better, and Lery is a very hamdy person to have. It is an upgraded version of Enrique in TB. Nice video!!!!
It's good to see the boat back in the bay. My Ericson 28+ is on dock 12 . I have not been sailing as much last few years . I did go for a day sail on friday, July 26, but didn't notice your boat as I was busy giving instructions to the crew . Anyway, nice vlog of the trip , look more enjoyable than my trips north. Hope to see you on the dock if you keep the boat there. Vince Swerkes old salt SSS
Wow must be ESP. I was diving on the boat yesterday and I was wondering if you were still around. It will be nice to see you again. I'm on 26. I was on the guest dock just for the first few days.
Great video
Hey man! That was a great series. My Ericson 32 is at Oyster Point Marina. I'll be back down there in August. Any chance you'd do an interview for my sailing channel? ua-cam.com/video/c8EkMWG8fE8/v-deo.htmlsi=g1Q1o-MytTjOLCXK
Nice boat mate.
Thank you!
My dad used to sell Ericson sail boats in Sausalito back in 68-70..they're still on the water so I guess they were made pretty well!
They have some well known issues but overall they are good boats.
Enjoyed tagging along virtually, Phil. You’re a legend!
Well I don't know about that but thank you. I'm glad you came along and enjoyed the trip.
Brought back many by gone memories of sailing around the Bay many-many moons ago. Thanks.
You shouldn’t waste all that warm water without a line being wet very fishy waters there 🧐 ya never know than I get to 25:42 ya just drove over them 🙄 Thanks for sharing .
Nice image of a Arleigh Burke guided missile destroyer!
Hey thanks for letting me know what kinda ship that was.
Well done, Phil. Fun to armchair sail with you.
Hey now that the boat is a lot closer you should come sailing some time.
@@PhilMacFarlane I would love to!
Is this the same Phil that won the solo transpac on the E35? Lol😊 Glad to see are you still sailing. Your channel popped up on my feed. You won a subscriber.🎉
LoL ! yep it's me! Welcome and thanks.
Great trip! Sail a Vie looks pretty happy at Coyote Point!
Got your sweetie and your dog waiting for you. Living large, Amigo!
The best day of the trip!
Well done, Skipper.
Muchas gracias!
What are the details of your boat? Make? Model? Year? What kind of auto-pilot do you have? Great video!
Hey Chad, It's a 1971 Ericson 35MKII that I bought in 1989. I have an Alpha 3000 electric auto pilot. A Pelagic electric auto pilot and what I use the most sailing is a Monitor wind vane. Thanks and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Its one of three for this trip but the third episode isn't put together yet as I just got back a few days ago.
I was wondering how you lifted the engine out you must have a designe point for hoisting
Well the engine, a Yanmar 3GM30F has a lifting point that I use but if you mean at the other end of the h=chain hoist. I have a large hatch out of view behind the mast and infant of the companionway. It open from the rear. So I take an old halyard and log it the=rough the hatch and the companionway several times and hang the chain hoist on it.
I live in oakland and have been looking for a sailing vessel to do the same travels. Im in my 40s and want to be ready when i an able to not work and sail
Good luck! It looks like you might be an electrician? I'm an Electrical contractor on the verge of retirement.
Is your Ericson a 32 or 35? I have a 32 from 1976. Great video. I aim to do that trip one day.
Hi Edward, Sail a Vie is a 1971 E35MKII
@@PhilMacFarlane wow! She's in beautiful shape 😍 I envy that bit of extra room you got!
i love the sunsets out there.
Always enjoy watching your adventures❤
Hey Toni! Awesome thanks
Wow! and here you are single handing up the Pacific coast to home/SFO a few months later. You da man!
Good medical care in La Paz
@@PhilMacFarlane That is really good to know as I turn 64 in a few weeks and won't have my boat ready to head south until I'm 65. Starting to feel my age a little!
Great job!
Thanks Steve I expected some joke comment 😅
It has been great to see your journey!
Hi Phil. Thank you for posting your journey so far! I don't know your plans but once you get to the bay area if you are planning on hanging around for a bit I'd like to connect with you if possible. I'm in the middle of a refit on my boat in the Brisbane marina near SFO and could use some advice on the trip down to BCS that I am planning. We live just north of Redwood City area. Have a continued safe trip up the coast! Cheers! Ken
Hi Ken, for sure I live in San Mateo and my Boat will be at Coyote Point. Lets get together!
@@PhilMacFarlane I’m in Foster City… howdy neighbor!
It looks like you finally got a good Wx window to continue North from what I can tell here in Cyprus.
Thanks Phil, it's been fun sailing along with you from the comfort of my couch.
Thanks Thea, great having you along!
This is why I fly a asymmetrical spinnaker
The boat back at the point?
The boat and I are in Mexico. Hoping to sail north to our new home Coyote Point. First time for her to live there. Your's & mine's old back yard.
Great🎉❤
smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy!
Ha!
Nice Phil! Glad to see it's all working well.
Enjoyed virtually sailing with you today. At least you solved one of the mysteries although kind of sounds like one step forward two steps back. Time is closing in, hope all goes well in your prep.
Thanks Thea. This morning has been very productive. I've fixed several of the other issues.
Looking good Phil! Any plans for departure date?
Yep.
Funny shit right there. Yep sometime between now and June 15th.
Poor thing.
Phil, great video and thanks so much for putting this up. I jsut acquired a used Monitor last week and am debating what kind of servicing it mght need. Amazingly, this seems to be the only video out there on the subject!
Never a dull moment….😂👍👍
Aw, crap, Phil, that sucks! Wishing you a fast and full recovery. Up to that point it sure looked like awesome sailing.
