D.C. Council Chair Mendelson Press Briefing Highlights on $515M to Downtown Arena Owner
On April 1, 2024, the Chairman of the DC City Council, Phil Mendelson had a press briefing on the controversial "emergency" gift of Half a Billion dollars to Ted Leonisis, the billionaire who own the Washington Caps, Wizards and other teams.
We wish this was a joke, but this video are some highlights including this contrast of statements and positions:
"I have a pretty good idea of what the terms are..." says Mendo about the $515M public funds deal, but he admits he doesn't actually have any term sheet in writing.
But then the Council Chair turns around and says he had a closed-door "gathering" of DC Councilmembers (attendance unknown) to discuss the terms of the deal (which he doesn't have in writing) involving $515M dollars of public money which are "secret."

Chris Williams of SW Voice hosted a meeting with Ward 6 residents and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson recently to discuss the DC Comprehensive Plan and the proposed amendments to the Plan and maps by the Mayor. Big takeaway, Mr. Mendelson notes how major projects like the stadiums induce impacts on existing communities, including displacement and environmental impacts.
The DC Comprehensive Plan is Racist!

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser and her Office of "Planning" have suggested hundreds of amendments to DC's central planning document and maps called the DC Comprehensive Plan. Despite ongoing massive displacement of Black residents from DC and the substantial racial wealth gap between Blacks and whites in the city, none of the Mayor's proposed changes to the Plan address these critically adverse socio-e...

Ward 6 resident and organizer testified before the Twilight Zoning Commission in DC on January 31, 2019 about a new hi-rise project on public land at 1000 4th Street SW. The project includes no family sized (3 bedrooms). Cook says this is part of the black removal happening in the city and asks the project be denied.

Recent Council hearing to reaffirm another white man to the 5-person Zoning Commission. At this time there are 5 men on the Zoning Commission. 4 of the 5 men are white. 1 lives in Virginia. Another has most of his work and energy in PG County. The Chair, Anthony Hood has been on the Commission for more than 15 years. None of them care about displacement or impacts on the environment. #mcmillanpark The people's victory befuddles elected officials and is heralded by preservationists and environmentalists. "The Court has ruled about governing law for DC's planning agencies, in that they must look at impacts from developments including land value destabilization and the environment," said Chris Otten with DC for Reasonable Development. "Key figures at the Office of Planning (OP...

Reese is the man. "Black people are incredible people, but we can't live underwater."
Thank you
I learned a lot in that allotted time. Thanks, Chris!
Thank you
Are those the ones by the hospital
The politicians of DC have been selling out black folks for over 2 decades now. Its a damn shame.
Wow! Everytime i drive by there I've always wondered what that was, it looks so strange, still the same in 2022
Great work!! You should use Promosm!!! ! It’s a great way to quickly grow your channel!
Plain and simple, this city is making it unaffordable, untenable, unsustainable and un-whatever else you want to say for working class people. And this is FAR AND AWAY disproportionately affecting, HURTING and KILLING people of color. Apparently, it’s okay if you work in the restaurants, office buildings, and retail establishments in DC if you like. As long as you have to commute from PG County because that’s the only place you can afford to live.
Thank you brother
Some of these sites could use an engineering expert with the cameraman.
yes, can you help?
@@dcforrd Sorry I left the DC area and I live in Geneva, Swisslandia now. If R.M.Jones Associates of DC /R.M.Jones is a civil engineering professor at Howard Univ. too/ is still there-their office was on upper 16-th Street and they would know a lot. But penguin6 may also do good investigation /youtuber in DC/
YES MA'AM
I grew up in Barry Farms in the mid '70s, it's over.
I was there during the same time. Well, we moved out in '73 so not quite mid 70's. It was never utopia but it's sad to see what it became just before being torn down. So much neglect by the people who were supposed to be running it.
@@Earl_Richter It's was a utopia to the people who thought it would last forever. I was there about 3 months ago, they're only about 4 houses left. You can't beat the location, though. All of DC is so easy to get around. You'd think wealthy Blacks would see the bigger picture and invest in Black community economic lol infrastructure, but on the other hand, poor Blacks need to invest in Self economic development as well. Other nationalities do build economic infrastructure for their own kind, wether their own kind are "ghetto" or not. We just don't do it. Why? Because of our fear of the White Man.
Well how cool is that. I hope they just keep it as is
Unacceptable!!
Will Merrifield is awesome. Please vote for him in the November election!
Get 'em Kirby, gift 'em.
I grew up up the street around a neighborhood that was beefing with this neighborhood.. NOW I'm a grown ass man with a child and I see that this is WRONG smfh Some of those people have been there over 20 years!!! That's their home! They treat us like the deers in the fuckin woods that "THEY" also destroy!!!!
Continue to organize to fight back, throught art, music, street heat, getting in the politicians faces. fb.me/dcgrassrootsplan

The answers that could have saved Barry Farms can all be found @ any "neighborhood library". In addition, the residents have access to the Library Of Congress, plus no less than 6 universities.......however of you don't look in the right places, you will not find the right answers.
what are the answers to a group of corporate developers in cohort with sell out bureaucrats and what section of the library can the answers be found to that conundrum.
"...what dc needs now more than ever is a thoughtful, concerned, and dil dil diligent commissioner to pay attention to the details of creating a [.unintelligibble ]...truly inclusive [for low income residents] city.." that encomium is as unreal as you m. cort.
I would love to come inside and make a urbex video but there are construction workers there who are planning to make it work again or something like that. Amazing video.
Ecchi Cap I think they are tearing it down to build homes.
DC Office of Planning gives the city to Developers and they make sure that the current residents are displaced or can't afford to purchase housing upon completion of development.
There is nothing wrong with the MLK library that more books and some minor interior decorating won't correct. Fix the damn water fountains. Install some hand wipe things that you see in every goddamned supermarket. That turd from the CityPaper Adam Weiner called it "grimey." I was at first offended, but the truth is there should be a massive cleaning done, especially all the DVDs.
Mr. Wolkoff has placed in stark relief the lack of regard for the opinions of DC's citizens demonstrated by Mr. Hood and DC Government in general. Opposition to the McMillan land give away was overwhelmingly AGAINST the project. DO NOT listen to what they say but watch what they do! We are presented daily with the most obvious examples of indifference. Our opinions are solicited and then ignored. It is clear to everyone that those who have influence in this city are those who have the wealth. The simply buy support. We get lip service and the illusion of Democracy.

Love the video. This would make a such a great park with amazing vista view. Do we really need more condos? NO!
