    Great episode. My second favorite gundog podcast (yours is the best one IMO, it just is) is Nick at Gundog It Yourself aka GDIY that Jeff mentioned. It isn't retriever-focused, but Nick is a curious student of dog training and has a lot of guests that I think don't apply to me personally and an hour later they are one of my favorite episodes. PS - Don't let the "Unforced Force Fetch" make you raise an eyebrow - short version, you get the dog further along in picking up the item and holding it under a reward-based system and then layer in pressure with a leash and e-collar later vs starting with introducing pressure at the onset of FF.

    • @HuntTestHobo
      @HuntTestHobo 27 днів тому

      Interesting. I will have to listen but based on your description I could also say I "unforced force fetch" as my dogs clearly understand the command fetch with treats as a reward prior to applying pressure. I still do ear pinch and then e-collar pressure so that probably is a difference.

    I bought a yellow field lab at 8weeks old…amazing female, super smart…I got the itch, and wanted a stud For down the road breeding. I ended up Buying 2 British boys (one black and one chocolate) 3 months later. So I at the start, I had a 5 month old and two, two month olds and have trained them all Solo and amateur. They are currently a year old and 9moths old. All three are ready for duck hunting. They all have casting training and are good at it. Patience is definitely the key! And me as the trainer being a constant learner so as to better train my dogs. Love to talk about the process some time

    Barton emphasizes a lot that tests across the pond are extremely strict on making noise. Specifically with whimpers/whining vs. being vocal, is this something that they (British breed enthusiasts) spend more time training (and how, if so?), or is this more for genetic display?

    • @HuntTestHobo
      @HuntTestHobo Місяць тому

      I think it's more of the judging standard. If a dog makes noise it fails which over time will weed out the dogs that make noise from the British breeding stock. So I think it's more genetic. There are ways to help with noise issues but I definitely think the breeding standards lead to the British labs being less vocal.

    I never know when trainers refer to a collar level what they are talking about. A low one? On what collar? How does that translate to other collars? I don't think anyone should be training with collars unless they understand all the differences between the different brands and models so I hope any newbies will understand there are big differences between collars and dogs.

    • @HuntTestHobo
      @HuntTestHobo 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment. I think more important than the brand or level of a specific collar is the response the dog has to that collar or setting. It's very important to work your way to the right level no matter which collar you are using. Then once you have done that there is really three levels of correction that is unique to that dog. A small correction for a small infraction, medium correction for obvious known infractions and then a high correction that is used after you have given a small and then medium correction with no behavioral change. You level up the collar to be just enough of a correction get the dog to change its behavior.

"Ok Spike, when you pick something up I need you to hold on to it until I take it from you, never drop it ok? When I blow this whistle one time, I need you to stop and turn around and sit and face right at me, ok? When I put this hand up, you turn this direction and this direction only and go straight back, got it?" MISSED OPPORTUNITY CLARK! :D

    51:00 Emotional stuff, even for hardcore, skilled people at the highest level like Lyle. “It was the nature of his profession that his experience with death should be greater than for most and he said that while it was true that time heals bereavement it does so only at the cost of the slow extinction of those loved ones from the heart's memory which is the sole place of their abode then or now. Faces fade, voices dim. Seize them back, whispered the sepulturero [gravedigger]. Speak with them. Call their names. Do this and do not let sorrow die for it is the sweetening of every gift.” ― Cormac McCarthy, The Crossing

    Hi I live and work my dogs in the UK and a lot of your terminology is different to what we are used too. Any chance you can maybe do a short podcast explaining the competitions and tests you do, terms like poisoned birds etc. like an idiots guide to the retriever scene in the USA. Thank you for doing a great podcast the guys you have on really know their stuff👍 Regards Keith

    • @HuntTestHobo
      @HuntTestHobo 4 місяці тому

      Thats a great idea. We will have to plan an episode like that. FYI, a poison bird is referred to a mark that is thrown but rather then picking that mark up right away you run a blind to another bird. In competition that mark is "poison" until the dog has already picked up the blind. Sometimes you pick those marks up and sometimes the bird thrower picks it up after the test is completed. It is a testing practice to see how much control you have over your dog as they run blinds. We use the practice in training to help the dog develop memory as they have to perform a task before they go get the mark and have to remember where it is.
