Exploring the Mutable Rings Reverb Patch
Rings is still one of the most well known modules in all of Eurorack. The problem: I don’t think enough people are exploring its resonator audio input. This input opens up a world of processing options, including using Rings like a reverb. Or a delay. Or even a flanger.
Here is my attempt at giving people a different patch to try with Rings.
Basic Rings Reverb Patch:
Send sound sources to Rings input (use it like a send effect)
Frequency at minimum
Damping from 4-5 o’clock (max out for “infinite” reverb)
Structure, brightness, and position to taste (I like to start at noon)
Treat the even and odd outputs like a stereo output
This video is not intended to be a guide. It’s more of a patch exploration with a few small bits of wisdom that I feel are worth sharing scattered throughout.
Do I think Rings is worthy of being the only reverb in a system? No.
But this patch does get new sounds out of a module that many people have already. And it sounds cool, especially in a sparse mix.

In this video, I'm showcasing how the Mutable Instruments Plaits sounds as a drum machine (particularly on kick, snare/clap, and high hats). I am relying mostly on the Intellijel Steppy and Quadratt to sequence Plaits' algorithm. Overdriven filters and envelope followers help add saturation to the drum sounds and make them more punchy. There's also a helping hand from delays and reverbs, althou...

Here are two songs created with the same patch (okay, I’ll admit there are some small variations). I’ve been listening to a lot of Aphex Twin recently and wanted to make some semi-random grooves that embodied some of his groovier work. The first piece, “Slippery”, is largely random melodic sequencing from the Orthogonal Devices ER-101/102. New DX7 patch from Plaits is making the funky bass voic...

How to Make Complex Sequences From Basic Sequencers (ft. Mutable Stages)

I love sequencers. They are the primary reason I love modular synthesizers. But it’s easy to take the basic “utilitarian” sequencers that only have a few steps and build them up into much more elaborate pieces. I had been thinking about the new Buchla x Tiptop Audio 245t, the Korg SQ-1, and the Doepfer A-155 Sequencer. All simple sequencers that could be combined endlessly with the right suppor...

Thank you for an excellent, and eye opening video. Also, a very big thank you for writing the patch details above.
This sounds great. Please help a guy out. I’m color blind, what color are the leds so I can match the settings?
@@Pamaracas Primarily in the orange/yellow sympathetic strings mode! There are a couple of clips using the other two modes and the Western chord alt mode but the main patch is sympathetic strings. Only use a single voice of polyphony too!
@@TravisKennedyMusic brilliant. Thanks
Pretty unique reverb sound. I like it a lot.
9:06 mark
Super cool!
I’m pondering this out loud so someone yell at me if I’m wrong: rings does karplus strong. Karplus strong uses and abused comb filtering. Reverb math focuses on delay lines and comb filtering. So at its core, rings does have the math under the hood to do reverbs? Am I getting this right? EXCELLENT VIDEO.
One of the alternate modes on Rings has a reverb: Karplusverb Hold the model selection button when non-linear string model is active (red). This is similar to the original model, but with a reverb, the absorption and decay of which follow those of the string.
@solongyouth Yes, I toyed with that mode a little but for this video wanted to showcase modes that did not have reverb algorithms built in.
@@TravisKennedyMusic Yeah, it was just a reply to OP. The video is very good!
Well if you oversimplify it, a delay network running at very short delay times can make a waveguide for physical modeling or a reverb model at much longer delay times. Same as a delay at very short times becomes a comb filter that can be used in a karplus strong patch! So yes, you are right. Although the green mode uses bandpass filter instead of delays which is also why it doesnt really produce any reverb sounds. It makes cool drums at very low frequencies though!
sound example 3 is a banger
Neat
Yup. Beads seems (or at least seemed) to get a bit of hate but I love it.
Did you patch in aftertouch? Nice video!
@@TheMachinesWon No aftertouch, just a mod wheel controlling vibrato depth on a couple of patches.
@@TravisKennedyMusic Ah of course, that's way more sensible haha
Thanks for sharing this 😊 Sounds great!
I had no idea Rings could be used like this. Thanks!
I use 2 C4rbns as a complex oscillator. It rules
I bought a voltage block for this very purpose
That is as amazing! First time in a while I’ve seen techniques new to me that are something I want to try. Thanks
This is making me want to put Rings back into one of my systems. Is this in vanilla mode or easter egg?
@@oddObjekt Vanilla mode!
Sorry but what means Vanilla mode ? ( Can't find it on google )
Standard
Regular mode; no Easter eggs or alternative firmwares necessary.
i would kill to be able to recreate the ending, so sick!
Awesome demo!
Awesome, Travis .. Stages, being a project of mine, for some time, now. What a gadget! What's cool too, .. is running signal out to separate voicings, such as one feed out to Beads, .. and then another out to Rings.
Great idea! I need to play with that idea more.
I honestly forgot I was watching a live jam! "This wicked Techno album was just playing away in the background!" :D Very nice work indeed. :)
... except its not a reverb/delay module..
I’m going to have to disagree with you on that one. Rings is a resonator. Think of a plate or spring reverb - it is just a physical item that is resonating and being amplified. While Rings may not have been designed and marketed as a reverb or delay, it can still perform those functions if you set it up correctly. Would it replace every reverb or delay I’ve got in my rack? Not at all. But it has way more in common with a module like the Make Noise Erbe-Verb than one would think and I am here to celebrate that aspect of Rings.
@@TravisKennedyMusic .. fair cop mate!
Thank you for this. I am once again wondering why the f I bought this module lol.
It’s a great module to have, take your time getting to know it!
great music
The footage of the stage using two devices is valuable in itself! Patching also seems complicated. There is currently a sale on used Stages products, so I'm thinking about what to do with them.
Very cool! I’ve never used beads in this way. Will definitely try.
Wow, I think I may buy a mutable rings, and I might put mutable rings into the noise engineering versio product line too if it hasn't already been done
Thanks for this. Great comparison. Now I know that I can get 8hp ripples and be fine
I have Rings.. so where is the reverb coming from
Rings is making the reverb. Turn frequency all the way down and plug a sound to the resonator input.
@@TravisKennedyMusic ..very interesting thank you for your response.. I will patch that up.. have been spending an entire day working on each module.. working on Rings tomorrow.. today working with Atom (Elements) and Magneto today..
In a single Plaits setup how can you get more than one drum sound - is this through utilising the model parameter to switch alternately to another sound? Then use delays and reverb to spread beats - I'm only going to use a Grids and Befaco Rampage and wondering how I might get the Plaits to spit out some decent drum arrangement..
You pretty much nailed it. With Grids, take the gate or accent outs and mix/attenuate into the model input.
Very nice work ! I’m curious on how you dial your modulation on the model input to to get precise instruments like on patch 4 (I think) ? Do you send an lfo and dial it manually until the hits land on the right models ? I love to send randomness to the model which sounds often very cool but in a more chaotic fashion 😅 Cheers 👊🏽
I’m using a Quadratt to attenuate gates from Steppy to change the model. There are a lot of ways to do it but I like how this technique doesn’t require any fancy modules.
I wasnt able to recreate this wkth the crease output but several other outputs worked okay for creating decently loud noise.
Why doed this module get so much hype lately? I dont think it sounds all that interesting tbh. No offense to the video creator. This module just doesnt do it for me.
Superinteresting video, because I did not see any other person doing this yet. Sounds a little bit like a spring reverb with modulation possibilities.
It feels good being a student. Thanks for the education🙏🏾
Made music on this thing for 4 years now. Horrifying how much it can do yet how simple it is.
Makes the filters sound like Filter of Crows, which is one I’ve wanted badly but now that I know I can do this I’m happy.
im confused. are you using the "resonator" mode or whatever with and external sound source in the video? if so what are you feeding it? sounds ridiculously nice.
Rings is in standard resonator mode, no Easter eggs or alt firmware. It’s been a while but I’m pretty sure the external sound was just Plaits.
How do you clock your set up here? When you mentioned divisions, is there something that's special the green mode is doing? There are these unsyncd LFOs? Awesome ideas here by the way
great video.. this is quite helpful. do you have the cycle jumpers on the back of the module set to bipolar or unipolar? also, are you using the warble (jumper) feature? any info is appreciated.. thanks
Mine is set to bipolar and no warble.
@@TravisKennedyMusic excellent. thank you! ... i found the other SM2 video that you made.. some really fantastic sounds that you're making with the sport modulator. it doesn't seem so impenetrable as it did, initially
I am still learning to use it and this is definitely one of the best (scarce) videos of this module.
Thanks for making this. On my list now.
Can you do a video on the Cluster? I am not sure I understand what it does...
Blows my mind how little visual media is available for that module still. :(
Do you ever find that the level of the audio input is too low? I'm wondering if I have an issue with both of mine.
Not that I can recall but I no longer have the A-106-5. Doepfer is very responsive to emails though!
I have this same issue. The module goes pretty much silent close to the halfway point.
With those type of filter design, high resonance will reduce the output volume. It’s just a characteristic of this circuit and is very common. You can use a VCA to boost the levels a bit after the output. One filter that sounds great and doesn’t drop volume with his res is Mutable Instruments Ripples. Both old and new versions. I have several of them and they sound great. Somewhat based on the old Roland filters.
This trick also works on a lot of VCO’s. Sometimes getting in LFO territory.
Thank you for this video, it was extremely helpful! I was struggling to get the Shape knob to control the envelope until I realized the Seed control was set to ON, so I deactivated it and it works great...Much appreciation!
😮😮😮👏👏👏👏👏👏🤩
Lovely dude!
Very nice! Have you seen Traffic module by Jasmine and Olive Trees? Really nice way to simplify the model-switching technique plus a bit of random to spice it up.
I have seen it and it looks like a very useful module. It saves a lot of patching but I don’t find myself in need of that functionality all of the time. Glad to see someone making a module for this very function though!
Traffic is very nice indeed. The ?? and Random function really adds to Plaits as a drum machine.
All very good stuff!
The absolute versatility of this module should not be over looked. The latest firmware really pushes it back to the front.
Couldn’t agree more!
Patch 4 is a bop, keep up the good work homie
