Welcome to my Channel! Working on pre-war Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars has been a full time occupation for me since 1988. Even after all that time, I still find the process stimulating and interesting. Over the years, I have learned from some incredibly skilled craftsmen, most of whom are now gone. The knowledge and skills have been disappearing at an alarming rate. I am hoping to create helpful and informative videos to assist people in learning about these cars and how to care for them. Other interest of mine, such as aviation, may also appear on my channel. If you have found these videos helpful or believe in my vision, and would like to show your appreciation, please feel free to donate to my PayPal account- tim@royceparts.com and I will keep them coming. At the very least, please Subscribe, Share, and Like my videos! Happy Motoring!!

A properly set up car in good order should start quite easily, yes it is a bit more of a process then just pushing a button, but things are always evolving as time marches on . Also keep in mind this is a six volt car as originally designed and they turn over just fine

An important aspect of restoring cars and antique vehicles is being able to machine. how some shops operate without a Lathe or Milling machine is beyond me.

The old girl, still has it. But you sir are driving her like a sports car. Much to the surprise of other people when she pulls away on green. 😅
"Oh, it is just like starting my Spitfire!" -British WWII pilots 😂😂
Wow! The Rolls makes my 1928 Pontiac seem like it has push-button start. I'm disappointed that my start up procedure is so simple. I guess GM had to do that because a Pontiac wasn't chauffer driven. I don't even have advance/retard, it's automatic! All that and 40 hp! : )
Well when they took over the development of the Whittle jet engine, the famous saying was that it simply sucks along like a hoover vacuum cleaner with only a few moving parts, but we're going to over engineer the hell out of this thing and the rest is history
Honestly like the look of that switch panel. Reminds me of those in army trucks for the lights.
Can you start it by hand , no battry ?
Cars that had magnetos such as earlier ghosts and their British counter parts, yes, but dual distributors had to have a battery
Thanks for such an interesting video. I wouldn't have a clue how to start that prior to watching this 😅
That's a pretty cool machine! Keep it up. :)
No wonder they had a little man to drive it. Put him in a uniform with hat and gloves adds a nice touch.
This is why they had chauffeurs. You need a degree to get the damned thing going.
I think early cars and airplanes were very similar to start.
You might want to check the flaps and rudder before flight! 😉
Another silly comment from the US
That's probably one of the cars my father worked on, way back when.
@@ttm2609 Nope, 77. My dad was a late starter, born in 1903. Did the upholstery.
😊 Would love 😍 to see more of this classic Rolls_Royce. Eat your heart out B.M.W !...
How fast can she go?
This one has an Overdrive and will reach 75mph, but cruises comfortably at 60-65mph
@@D-JMI very nice!
@@D-JMIWhen was a Rolls_Royce ever designed for speed ?. Mostly comfort and ride quality.....
@alancrisp1582 early on they were surprisingly fast compared to most P2 and six litter Bentleys were an even match almost
@@D-JMI Yes,you are quite correct. The much later models from the 1960s - 1990s. Were not really that fast. Due mainly to their weight and automatic transmission....
Where is the carb located on this beautiful engine
photos.app.goo.gl/McKLYHVV2V6tXGJWA
it bolts to the other side of the engine cylinder block and there is a tunnel connecting it to the inlet manifold
Rolls-Royce does not break down they fail to proceed
@ttm2609 yes
all that sh1t just to start a Rolls......no thanks....I'll stick with a VW Beetle....LOL
You are missing the whole point of owning and driving a classic Rolls_Royce !...
You think like a poor person. Somebody who would buy this car would have their chauffeur do this for them.
And a few donuts, upsize burger meal with jumbo coke and a Harris vote, bless you 🎉
@@ttm2609 Of course the anti-democracy crowd needs to make it political again.
We have a 1928 P1 ( in the UK ) in our family next year 60 years ownership .The Derby cars of course are reversed , the induction / exhaust system on the left side .The starter motor though sounds identical !.
It is always good to hear about people staying involved with these cars
Great video! Thank you for sharing.
Not a good thing to find. At least with the block and head cleaned it will have a chance to run cool as intended.
She is fortunate to be in your hands
Super well done. What modern battery do you recommend? I have a 1928 Phantom 1 ( Chassis 45WR) and use wet cell battery of 70Ah. They last about two years without any trouble. Toying with the idea of going to 60 Ah sealed battery this time which some people advise against for fear of exploding if overcharged. My 2nd question is regarding the Ammeter in my car which is calibrated to 40 amps. It shows no more than 2 amps charge or discharge in use. Is this normal. The car is on original wiring and has no electrical issues. Amer Ahmad Lahore, Pakistan
Have you left the chuck key in your lathe chuck Tim ;-)
@@tunneltug maybe?
@ neat.
Absolute legend thank you very much.
Timothy, I could watch you work like this for hours well, I have in fact. Wayne, Australia
Thank you for a lovely video. You have a very good job
@cobar5342 glad you enjoyed it
Did you have a video of removing the masterswitch?
I don't know if I show any of that in video 1? I will also check to see if I did get some, however it is a fairly straight forward process. It is only attached to the wood with 3 or 4 wood screws, undo all the upper fuse panel terminals the conduit from the firewall, two fasteners and there you go
Super. Thanks. Q1: Should you not always start with timing on early ( retarded) even on electric start, as done on a phantom 1. Q2: what is the lever/ handle with knobs on both ends , seen stowed above the fusebox? Q3: on the dash there is a push button marked reverse. What is that, reverse lamp? Amer Ahmad Lahore Pakistan. RR PI 45WR
it is best to start fully retarded most of the time, if the engine is warm it is not as necessary. The lever with the knobs is the handle for the on board jacking system DWS scissors jacks, one front, one either side rear . these are found on mid 30's models R-R and Bentley . Yes my car has a reverse lamp. It was required in the UK to pass MOT
Running like SWIS WACH
Man, I already love you; This are real cars ,pure mechanical cars !
She is zipping along rather nicely, Timothy.. err except for the wobbles
Yup, it keeps you on your toes and awake. My 1929 Seagrave Fire Truck does it too only it is even more dramatic, kind of like riding a bucking dinosaur
awesome video!! thank you
great video!!! thanks again!!
Can you show me how to start the phantom III from the inside. We don’t know how to start the one we are trying to get out of our garage😂.
When did it run last?
1991
somewhat good shape without rust but the tank sadly had gas in it which I’m pretty sure has went bad.
chassis number is 3AZ214 if that helps. I don’t even know what that is but I assume it’s the vin.
@@americanbeserker2324 As with any old car that has been sitting, it sounds like you need to do a typical recommisioning, start with dropping and giving the gas tank a proper cleaning blow through all the fuel lines rebuild the fuel pump, clean all fuel filters including the one at the rear of the engine. Remove the carburetor and give it a good clean out too , it is also a good idea to remove the rocker covers and pour oil over the rockers, this will lubricate the cam and followers. Give the oil a change as wellas clean all the oil filters you can then go through the ignition system clean points and see if it will fire off
This video is much appreciated - there is so little information available about the P3 so this is invaluable to the next generation of owners. I'm in the middle of re-wiring my car for the first time in it's history. It's neat to see the original brown chassis paint on the car you are working on.
It is mine
Is this project for you or for a client?
Great detail. Thanks
Lovely work. I dismantled the carburettor in my Wraith with only the manual to go by and found the referb rather daunting This is a beautiful piece of machinery
Very helpful, thank you
Thank you Timothy. The attention to detail is superb
Thank you for this. I hope it applies to that in my 1939 Wraith
Wraith uses a later type pump, I can email info on it, but have not done a video on it yet, tim@royceparts.com
Just to say that I broke down on the A303 in the UK this afternoon- just past Stonehenge. I found your video - followed what you did - and you got me home!! Thank You! You are a star! Best wishes Johnnie
That is excellent to hear, glad it worked out for you and not much walking or trailer was needed
what a boring fellow and miserable vid,
Very informative, nicely presented, thank you
Those square-headed bolts remind me of the coach bolts used to hold together the wodden cant rails and B-pillars on wooden framed cars made in the UK in the 1930s, 40s and early 50s
Thank you, again, Mr. Jayne! Can´t get enough of this Klingon Battleship you´re working on. By Golly, the chassis is so long one could use it as a template to build a trailer for a PT Boat!!
Please edit.😊
Are there any aftermarket synchros available for the transmission?
No it was simply not designed for that
