Linux (Ubuntu) is running on the Surface BEAUTIFULLY! Bye, Microsoft!
A few things have happened since my last update. First, and most importantly, I got engaged! Christmas eve! Next, I installed Ubuntu on the surface pro, and it works wonderfully
been on it 3 weeks now. I love it. In fact, I'm filming this and editing this video on it right now.
It's not replacing my main computer, because it's slow, old and has no storage, but it is lightweight and small so I can take it everywhere in my tiny one shoulder backpack bag and it basically replaces my Chromebook for being on the go. In bed, it can't sit on my lap, so I therefore can't use the keyboard, so in bed, my Chromebook is still my Chromebook.
I do plan, now, to unlock my Chromebook and turn it into a linux Chromebook. I have to bust into it with a screwdriver in order to do this, but this is the plan and I will update you all once I am prepared for that.
One problem, though, linux is not going to be able to replace Windows on my main computer entirely as long as I'm a DJ. NONE of the DJ software that I need to operate the physical hardware that I spent thousands of dollars on has linux versions. If I'm not mistaken, the operating system on my Denon mixer probably IS Linux, but there is no linux version for thier library management software that I need to prepare my music. Nor does Pioneer/Recordbox. Nor does MixedInKey, Lexicon or Platinum notes. The only software that I use that has a linux version is Media Monkey, which I use to quickly and easily edit all the meta data of new downloads.
There's no real point in me doing it with WINE right now. I have this linux computer, I'll have a second one soon in the old Chromebook, and the DJ computer can just be a windows computer. I doubt that I'm going to be able to truly find a workable sustainable work around for this as long as I'm still a DJ, so for the foreseeable future one of my machines, and probably the one with the most storage, is going to have to remain a Windows machine.
But so far so good. I'm starting to get the hang of using the command line to do stuff, I've updated my packages several times already--very exciting.
So next steps will be to do the same thing on the Chromebook. Then, the big project will be to set up my own VPS out there somewhere and start to offload some stuff like my RSS feed reader, my websites, a peertube, and pixelfed instance for myself, and maybe some other fun stuff. So if you've done these things, and you can give me some advice about hosting multiple sites and apps on a single VPS account, let me know! My websites aren't due for renewal until later in the year so I'm going to be taking my time, doing it right, and making this sustainable for the long term. But I'm hoping to be running my sites and apps off my own VPS soon. And then who knows? Maybe I'll set up my own server at home! Definitely thinking of doing a media server... but no solid plans for that yet. Stay tuned.
