I think a chunk of that is due to how King K. Rool’s character design complements Donkey Kong well, plus strikes a good balance of being recognizably unique yet still simplistic enough to be versatile. Like, having the antagonist be an anthropomorphic reptile seems to provide a nice mirror/contrast to an ape protagonist, similarly to how well the Joker’s colorful clown appearance conveys him as an equal-and-opposite to Batman. Also, I think part of why it is easy to have K. Rool appear in many different situations is how easy it is to dress him up in different costumes (crowned king, pirate captain, mad scientist, etc.) yet still have him be recognizable. Meanwhile, Lord Frerik and the Snowmads appear to have their appearance/identity specifically dependent on that “Ice Viking” gimmick, which may limit the variety of different ways they could be portrayed/utilized.

Of course, they were literally inspired by king kong and godzilla..

Agreed. The scenery kinda makes me feel cozy and wanna get under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate, and the theme song gets me pumped with excitement for seeing the boys go on a crazy adventure. Those feelings don't mix. Something else I'd love to see is using this animation format in the episodes themselves.
