Team Exulans
My wife and I bought a Catalac 8M catamaran in 2020, modernized and recommissioned it. The catamaran had had been out of the water for 17 years. We named it Exulans from the Latin name of the wandering albatross, diomedea exulans.
Based in Northern Ireland we are planning to explore the Irish and Scottish sailing areas initially and share our experience with views of the locations visited.

Two Engines are better than One! Sailing Catalac. Catamaran sailing Ireland. Fair weather sailing.

This was a short sailing season for us with unfavourable weather (when we had time) and two separate problems with our main outboard engine. We ended up doing only short trips when the weather was fine. Our planned holiday in Scotland did not work out. Hopefully, next year will be better. Some views of fair-weather sailing (or motoring) here.
Planned trip to Islay. Sailing Catalac catamaran. Ireland & Scotland. Rough sea, wind against tide.
My planned trip to Islay did not turn out as hoped or expected. It shows that even small things can have a big impact on an outcome. Single-handed sailing trip from Red Bay, East Coast of Northern Ireland heading for the Isle of Islay in Scotland. Nearly 2/3 of the way turned back due to damage to the mainsail. The subsequent strong tide against wind results in 'interesting' sailing conditions....

Lovely but a very exposed mooring 😮
Indeed. One has to monitor the weather forecast and move the boat when certain limits of wind direction/speed/waves are likely going to be exceeded.
ah...neue Abenteure kommen wieder. Super!!!
Danke für den Kommentar. Ja, lange überfällig.
🎉😊❤
My grandparents had a 30ft catalac. I spent every holiday on board. I absolutely love them. They are so easy and stable to sail
Great to hear you had a such good experience. Thanks for the comment, really appreciate it.
Might get more views if it weren't for that damned music. Sailing is a quiet hobby!
Thanks Roy, appreciate your comment. I agree, and I am still learning how to best edit the videos. Sometimes, I think music can add to the footage, but just the natural sound of the environment is often probably the best. Hope it doesn't put you off watching my videos. Will aim to minimise music in future and see how it goes. Further future feedback is appreciated.
Habe leider Deinen Kommentar erst jetzt gesehen. Ja, war ich. Alles gut verlaufen.
Hi, congrats on the restoration of your 8m. I have one as well. I noticed your trailer that you had the boat sitting on. Trying to build one for mine as well....Any chance I can bother you with asking dimensions?? Do you have an e-mail address so I can message you? Thanks. Laurent
Hi Laurent, you can contact me on Skype 'Reimerair'.
Wieder mal gewas anderes😄
Danke schoen.
you just had to ruin everything with that crap music? what about proper commentary? dont be lazy

Saw a few of your films; that is great to see what you are doing. Looking forward to the next videos. Kind greetings from The Netherlands
Looks great and imagine the cabin cushions (lovely) took some blood sweat and tears for whoever made them!.
Hi Team Exulans! This is Team Naos! In Minute 8:12 your Mast is still laying on the dog house. We are looking for information about the exact measurements of the mast tabernacle / Jutbaum and the Mastbracket (wooden X), to be although able to rise the mast without a crane. May you can help us?! Thanks in advance and fair Winds! Lars (Hamburg/Germany)
Skype Name Reimerair.
@@Team-Exulans ich melde mich gerne per Skype!
how much coppercoat did it take to do the boat?
I used 10 litres for 4 coats (including the rudders) plus a fifth coat near the waterline. 9 litres would have been just about enough.
Looks magical😀
Thanks. So it seems "offerings" were made🤢 Did you bring back any catch in return? 😁 *PetriHeil* 👍
Actually, "offerings" were not made at the end, this was perhaps the reason why we didn't catch anything. PetriDank.
Hello, is this small catamaran ok for open sea cruse?
My understanding is that it was designed for the UK and the Irish sea. A number have been sold to the USA and crossed the Atlantic.
I believe a Dr and his family sailed one from UK to Australia, some yeras ago…
Hi, thinking of getting a catalac 8m. Could you tell me the length of the boom and the foot of the main sail? The boat I am looking at needs new sails. Thanks David pedley
<smile> getting dizzy/seasick on this one <smile>
Could you tell/show us some of the electrics - esp. induction cooktop.
There are some details on my first video re. refit, showing the electrics, starting @ 7.19 minutes or so. The ceramic hob is a simple, free-standing unit with a max. of 2000W, 8 settings, it can be used as low as 500W. It is screwed onto a board and a second board fitted at the top level, providing the space for the cooling fan. The power supply is a 24V solar system consisting of 4 x 130W panels two of each in series and the pairs are then parallel connected to the charge controller. More efficient than a 12V system. Charging LifePO4 batteries 24V 130A. A 12V transformer then supplies the board electrics. The 24v inverter is directly connected. Microwave and hob cannot be used simultaneously, it overloads the system unless it is connected to a shore power supply.
Re. the above correction: it's an induction hob, not a ceramic hob.
@@Team-Exulans Thanks-Dankeschön ... getting old here. Forgetting what I watched in February. Q.: Did you get rid of the 2nd watertank? What were you reasons to place batteries there?
I kept the 2nd water tank. My reasons for installing the batteries in the port bilge were as follows: keep the centre of gravity low where possible; keep wire lengths to a minimum; utilise the relatively small but ideal space for the inverter, fuse boxes, transformer and battery charger close to that bilge area in the cupboard.
Now that's a REVIVAL - not just a refit 👍
Thank you. Still, work to do, but it's usable.
Superb.
Thank you.
Keep up the great work! You should check Promosm!!! ! I’ve been using it on my other channel to promote my videos.

Hi, thanks for the request. We only bought it last year. Perhaps sometime in the future, unlikely over the next few years but no one knows what the future holds.
