Creating a homemade barometer to monitor high and low pressures can be a fun and educational project. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to make one using simple materials: **Materials You'll Need:** 1. Glass jar or container with a wide mouth and airtight lid 2. Flexible rubber balloon or latex glove 3. Clear plastic straw 4. Cardboard or heavy paper 5. Scissors 6. Tape (duct tape or clear tape) 7. Ruler or measuring tape 8. Marker or pen 9. Water 10. Tape measure or online weather source (for calibration) **Instructions:** 1. **Prepare the Jar:** - Clean the glass jar thoroughly and ensure it's completely dry. - Fill the jar with water, leaving a couple of inches of space at the top. - Seal the jar tightly with its lid. 2. **Create the Barometer Chamber:** - Cut the bottom of the plastic straw at an angle to make a sharp point. - Attach the balloon or latex glove to the wide end of the straw, securing it tightly with tape. Make sure the seal is airtight. 3. **Prepare the Cardboard Scale:** - Cut a piece of cardboard or heavy paper to fit the length of the jar's side. - Use a ruler or measuring tape to mark equal increments along the cardboard. These increments will represent pressure changes. You can start with inches of mercury (inHg) or millibars (mb) if you prefer metric units. 4. **Attach the Straw to the Scale:** - Tape the straw vertically along one side of the cardboard, with the pointed end of the straw at the bottom. - Align the straw's base with the zero mark on the cardboard. 5. **Calibrate Your Barometer:** - Look up the current atmospheric pressure from a reliable source like a weather website, local weather station, or mobile app. - Adjust your cardboard scale so that the current atmospheric pressure aligns with the water level inside the jar. Use the marker to indicate this point on the cardboard. 6. **Monitor Pressure Changes:** - Place your homemade barometer in a stable location indoors, away from direct sunlight, drafts, and temperature fluctuations. - Observe the water level in the straw over time. As atmospheric pressure changes, the water level will rise or fall in response. **How It Works:** Changes in atmospheric pressure affect the air pressure inside the balloon or glove connected to the straw. When the outside air pressure increases, it pushes the water up the straw, and when the pressure decreases, the water level in the straw drops. Remember that this homemade barometer might not be as accurate as professional instruments, but it's a great way to observe general pressure trends and learn about weather patterns. Make sure to keep an eye on the weather reports to validate your observations and understand the correlation between pressure changes and weather conditions in your area.
