Fluffles here! Again! My main mission here was as described: Talking points. There were a few movies I was trying to pick from before I narrowed it down to 2, and the rest were all eliminated because TGO is just a big ol box of Oops All Talking Points. You and I had the same reaction, Bill. This was my third time watching it, and twenty minutes in I just put my phone down because I couldn’t type fast enough to keep up. This movie did have a Hostel-like moment in it, but the other movie. I Saw The Devil, was filled with Hostels. It didn’t always kill the victim, but lordy oh lordy, the Hostels. I’ll take that one off of the burner, and that’s just fine. Plenty more talking point movies in my arsenal. Overall, I’m glad you two enjoyed the movie. I agree that it’s not something I think about watching very often, but once I put it on, I just sit there glued to the damn thing, laughing my ass off… Sitting in my Chair the whole time. My comfy, comfy… Chair. I’m going to regret missing out on being part of this for a long time, but just because spooky month is over for you guys, doesn’t mean it’s over for me… DUN DUN DUN.

Sorry for the wall of text. Eli Roth is an interesting individual in the horror community. He’s almost Tarantino-esque in his knowledge about horror, and is a bigger horror fan than probably anyone on the planet. His movies just… Aren’t great, the worst parts of mid-2000s horror. They’re mean, homophobic, sexist, and just all around hateful. There’s a place for all of that in horror, but not the way he does it. Cabin Fever has a special place in my heart for having one of the only scenes in horror that I can’t watch. But I 1000% can’t listen to it, it’s horrific. The rest of the movie is fine, but every side-character other than our main two comes straight from Hostel, and even the main two are not great, some much less great than others. Much more of a fun movie than Hostel, sometimes to the point of being fucking stupid, but it has some really good gruesome stuff going on. Hostel has a politically charged take that can be applied to it in the post-911 fearmongering state that America had become, but the movie just sucks with or without it. The first half is sex, every -phobe and -ist you can think of, and every main character being just the most unsympathetic douchebag you can imagine. The second half is the poorly-named ‘torture porn’, with nameless characters playing the personality-less antagonists, and that’s where the movie falls apart. I can recommend movies more disturbing than this that have a point to the torture beyond ‘I’m rich and you’re not’, and the motives can make the movie heartbreaking, fun, soul-destroying, and so very much more. Hostel 2 was his followup, that changed the trio of backpacking men into women, but the plot was the same. They delved more into the Murder Gang, following two guys who made purchases and are going to be partaking, and while interesting, it’s more than a little predictable. The kills are both more interesting and less torturous, it’s less of a joyless slog, but ultimately it just feels like more of the same. Is it better? Yeah, but not by enough that I’d recommend it. Green Inferno is Eli Roth’s take on the most notorious horror movie ever made (maybe second nowadays?), in Cannibal Holocaust. But it’s too modernized, too… sterile, in its brutality, even though it’s almost assuredly harder to watch than Hostel. But just like Hostel, the characters are paper thin and it’s hard to find anyone to cheer for. Hard pass from me. As far as the kind of person into this stuff. I’m pretty sure Feo’s specifically talking about me. :) I’ve been watching horror from a young age, and went through a phase where I watched many of the most disturbing horror movies ever made. I still do, and two of the notorious ones are on my Top 10 all time, but these days, there needs to be a point to the disturbing content or I’m going to get bored. If I don’t care about the protagonist, or the antagonist, or the story, or… anything, it’s not going to do anything for me. There has to be something beyond the gruesome content to pull me in, otherwise I’ll just turn it off and go do ANYTHING else.

I haven't seen this movie before. You guys talked a lot about The Chair but never gave any details. What's up with that?
