A Gentle Feast or The Peaceful Press? Which one is the right curriculum for my family?
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I’m looking into the Alveary for next year. Currently with CMEC. Do there seem to be a lot of extra supplies needed for science and/or other subjects? Also do you use their math? Thank you for any insight!
Thank you for sharing. I love these videos! I will have grades k, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 next school year so I need to combine my forms 1-3 as much as possible. Do you have any tips for narrations? I find when my okder kids want to narrate, they have to wait for me to become available and then it feels rushed. Trying to figure out a better rhythm for adding them in!
You are so welcome! 🤗 Thanks for watching. It encourages me to hear they are helpful. My form 2 and 3 children narrate after all their readings are done. So they come to me once they complete their work for the day. They bring their agenda. I check off their work as they show it to me and narrate. It takes about 10 minutes per child. Often, it occurs while I’m in the kitchen cooking dinner or cleaning up from lunch.
How long do your days typically take using the Alveary?
We do 5 days worth of work in 3 days right now, so my form 2 students usually have about 3.5-4 hours of lessons if you count our family studies during breakfast (they are 45-60 mins long). My form 1 students does maybe 2 hours a day including our family studies.
Thanks for sharing! I love this insight into Alveary and I would love to see a syllabird tour/ review!
I need to be brave and do this. I know it would help some people. I jyst need to get over my stigma about being tech not savvy.
Yes do it anyways! I know a lot of moms who are not tech savvy (including me), we would appreciate overlook even if it’s not up to your normal standard. Plus it may even be more helpful because we can see that we could make syllabird work even when we aren’t very good at technology.
I saw that we can purchase individual subjects. I kind of put together my own Charlotte Mason curriculum, but I need help with science. What are your thoughts on the Alveary science? I have Form 1 and 2 if that helps 😉
I have talked a lot about how much I like their science plans. They are great, imo.
I love your little planners!
Thanks! They have been very helpful in keeping us organized. Simple and analog, but great for us.
I love that your son listens in on his younger brother’s Pilgrims Progress readings. 😊❤
I have just a little mom guilt for not adding him into the lesson formally, but it is about the only snuggle time my 8 year old gets to himself.
Yay!! I am so glad you did this video!! Thanks so much!
Sure thing! I hope you found something helpful. I hyper-analyze what I share for days afterwards, lol.
It says the educator must have a high school diploma or GED. How does one send proof of this to them ? Do they even ask for it ?
They do not require proof. You sign a Declaration of Intent annually and on it, you agree to the state regulations: one of which is you must have a GED of HS diploma to home educate your children in GA.
@@kindletogetherness thank you.
I hope Logic of English works for your son!!! As a mom of a severely dyslexic son and also a certified dyslexia and OG trained specialist, I agree that it’s so important to go with an OG program!! 🩷🩷
Thanks girl! Day 2 was yesterday and he knows a lot of the beginning lessons, so we are going sort of fast to get where he actually is.
The Anne White Guides are so helpful for Plutarch, and we also absolutely love Little Pilgrims Progress (though we have an older printing) and because of so many kids we read it every 2-3 years before starting Pilgrims Progress again. Formal Spanish also was on our chopping block unfortunately, but I can speak a few things and so sometimes I just start talking to my kids in Spanish and they try to figure it out. Though its not their favorite when I do that, but my high schooler is doing independent German lessons, and she will mimic me by speaking to me in German because I can't usually figure it out (though I know a few from my Grandma and she hates when I figure it out). She did this with Latin too when we did that, and it cracks me up because she thinks its a small way to make fun of me, but it secretly a homeschool mama win😁 My kids absolutely love Shakespeare and I hope to be able to attend some plays with them some day.
I love how you play with languages and your kids get exposure that way.
Hello! Which grade of science are you using for your 4th/6th graders?
Hi Amy! I chose to look at the Grades, 4, 5, and 6 plans and pick and choose what I knew would interest them most. It was important to me that this shift to a more lab based science was exciting and engaging as I want their buy in for the future. So we did Grade 4 plans for term 1 and have chosen Grade 6 plans for term 2. I have not yet decided which ones for term 3.
@ thank you for your response! We are starting The Alveary as soon as I get all the books in! I have a 5th, 3rd and 1st grader. I’m just trying to decide on how or if to combine any of them. The easiest would be my 1st and 3rd for science. I’ve considered going back a tad to 4th grade science for my 5th grader as she might enjoy it too. It’s difficult to choose!
Combining 1st and 3rd makes sense for sure. I would personally combine those student in several subjects. They are both "Form 1". We do Family lessons together each morning and I have all my boys combined for them: Poetry, Recitation, Bible, Bible History, Handcrafts, Paper Sloyd, Folk Songs, Art, Current Events, Shakespeare, and Composer Study. Then my older two who are Grade 4 and Grade 6 do Science, US History, World History, Natural History, Geography, and Literature together.
I love the language you use--adjustments instead of ditched!
Yes, "adjustments" is a much more gentle approach, isn’t it?! I honestly don’t have any negative feedback about what we chose to opt out of for right now. So they truly were just some necessary change due to us being us!
Best wishes with LOE! We used another Orton-Gillingham program, All About Reading, with my struggling reader and it helped him tremendously! He really needed that daily repetition of phonograms and a slow, incremental approach.
I’m loving all the kind and encouraging words from mamas that have walked this path. Thanks for making time to tell me it was helpful. Being in the middle of it is a scary place and I’m super thankful for the many resources out there to get my little guy what he needs.
Loved hearing your own experience with this. We did mid term CM exams for the first time in Dec and it was fun! I recorded her voice at a coffee shop over hot chocolate. Got some great ideas here, thanks!
I love that you started assessments! We really like our exam dates. They are a true blessing and so insightful for me as their mama and teacher.
I just love listening to you and how your family runs! It blesses me every time 🫶🏽
I am honored that you watch and find it encouraging. All glory to God, friend.
@ I'd be curious to know- now that you've been a part of the Alveary community and used their curriculum/resources for half a year- if you could use Alveary from the start would you have? I'm not asking if you "regret" using A Gentle Feast. I know it's a fabulous curriculum. But do you feel Alveary would've been superior for your family?
@@jadadhite What an insightful and thoughtful question. I do not feel like I would have changed our path at all. I am VERY happy with the course we have taken and grateful we began with The Playful Pioneers from Peaceful Press, moved on to A Gentle Feast for 5 years, and then switched into The Alveary. My personal bend, my motherhood, and my children needed the gentleness of AGF in form 1. We moved into The Alveary with 2 students in Form 2. Most of the ways I see the benefit are in form 2 for us. I don't know that I wouuld have loved the Alveary like I do when I had 3 very little boys and was still forming my own rhthyms etc. It is a very rigorous and FULL curriculum, which even I am having to cut certain things.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on how the alveary book lists compare to those of Ambleside online or even cmec. I know they’re deemed as more progressive or modern books so I’m curious about your thoughts. From a fellow homeschool mom currently in decision making process 😅
I jotted this down as a future video idea. Thanks for mentioning it.
We love LOE over here. It has worked really well for us. My son's reading took off near the beginning of level C. We have slowed down using it since his reading has actually now exceeded where they expect it to be in the curriculum. I skip things now but I'd like him to finish learning the rest of the spelling rules and phonograms. I really like how it teaches spelling and found videos on UA-cam helpful when learning the "finger spelling" method. Look forward to hearing how it works for your son!
I’m loving the feedback I’m hearing about LOE. I’m excited to see my guy progress and for things to click for him.
I love your dress my daughter and I have the same one and love it. I would love to learn how you do your nature co-op it’s something that I would love to do something more in nature with my children
I need to talk about that more! It’s a common request. And thanks about the dress! Their dresses are so comfortable and feminine.
We struggled to add a foreign language as well! I love that you’re using LOE. We loved Foundations!!! Also, I am a type A person! But my children are not. Often MY systems don’t work for them and flexibility is so important! I love that you consider them and their needs above the curriculum or what others say you “should” do. Way to go Momma!
I love your use of the puppets as well! We do the puppets but it never occurred to me to pull them out while we listen. I have them color while we listen and then they will reenact parts with the puppets. But it is harder sometimes for them to make those connections after the fact!
Thanks so much for the encouraging words. God is kind and helps us learn to meet our families where they are and how to use our gifts and personalities to be a blessing to them!
I enjoyed this, thank you! Do you have any other videos about your son’s struggle with reading? I’m in the same boat.
Hi Ashley! Not right now. We are in the thick of it. I’m sorry you’re also facing this. It’s tough on a mama’s heart to see her kids struggle. I’m so thankful that the Holy Spirit knows them and can guide us!
We are doing spanish 3 times a week and I feel like we are so far behind but that is currently all we can fit in and im just going at our pace. I was having a really hard time with plutarch until I bought another resource that is alittle easier to understand for my daughter. We do hymms, composer study, and art at our Charlotte mason co-op once a week so that takes some off of my plate. We are loving this curriculum I didnt think I would enjoy the Alveary as much as I do.
I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying Alveary! Which Plutarch resource has been helpful?
Ooh logic of English was exactly what my daughter needed. It did take time and I was getting nervous it wouldn’t ever click and maybe logic of English was actually a bad choice then all of a sudden things clicked she’s reading every free second. I’m constantly tearing up finding her staying up late bc she just had to read next chapter. Rn I’m totally letting her indulge 😂
What a WONDERFUL thing to hear! I’m praying this will be the thing that helps it all make sense for him.
Do you think you’ll stick with the Alveary for next school year?
I do! They open membership in February and I intend to continue.
@ I would love it if you put a video together showing how you combined some subjects! We signed up for the Alveary this year, but it was so hard to use with 6 and I didn’t even the main parts of it 😳. We’ve been using it for Art, sloyd and handcrafts.
@ I’ll try and share more about that. I think I’ve touched on it here and there in the 7 week update, but I’ve not made a dedicated video.
@ thank you! I’ll have to go check that video out.
We started the year with the Alveary too and we had to drop A LOT. This was our second year with the Alveary and it just feels like the feast was too large for us. 😩 We are just burnt out. My kids take an art class, a Spanish class, and also attend our local BSF. We were just tapped out and lost some of the joy and love of learning. I love the book selections so I decided to use their books and ditch their plans for now and almost turn them into unit studies. We ADORE the book selections but I feel like our neuro atypical (ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and dysgraphia) family doesn't click well with the typical CM schedule/lesson style, especially with having a toddler and having a large age gap between my older two. 😅 So currently we are focusing in on the US history, we are using some unit studies and we already have to dig in to the US history topics and time period the Alveary has planned. I still stand by the Alveary being an AMAZING program and I NEVER thought we would love Shakespeare as much as we do thanks to the Alveary. My 5th grader became obsessed with Hamlet! We just got to a very similar spot as you guys. ❤ I literally cried a bit and felt so horrible pulling way way back and dropping stuff but at the same time, I felt such a huge relief.
I’m so glad you ditched what didn’t serve your family, friend. Burnt out mamas don’t make great teachers, do they?!?
I think you explained how your brain and “system” works so well. I feel it 🤣 some things are just very innate and the process is more of an internal feeling than a clear cut system. I enjoyed your update 💙
Thanks for validating my brand of chaos. LOLOL. Nice to be seen and understood, even as a mama. Sometimes, I feel like an imposter making videos and offering suggestions to others, lol.
Also you are amazing! I appreciate your videos
Thanks so much for watching and for the kind words!
We dropped Spanish because it wasn’t sticking two years ago; we switched to ASL and are doing great. We tried Shakespeare but due to having a new baby, we stopped it and will pick it back up next year. I had to drop a few extracurriculars because I couldn’t handle it. I’m grateful for that Grace.
Good for you for knowing what is serving your family well and what isn’t. Our kids will learn even from those choices. ❤
I have another question did the sight and sound not work with your child?
Hi Brandy! I used the AGF reading curriculums for all three of my sons. With my eldest two, it worked great! They are both wonderful readers and they worked well. For my youngest, I actually discuss a bit more in the update I posted today. He needs an Orton-Gillingham approach.
Right now in our first year with the gentle feast cycle three I have a first grader and a third grader and we’re gonna be switching next year
Let me know if you ever have questions. I hope you finish strong and love the switch too!
Hope you come back soon! Miss your videos. 😊
Thank you for checking in, I hope to have more out soon! Life is just so very busy.
I spy a super cute dress 👀🤭I thought I recognized your sweet face! I am so glad to have stumbled upon your videos!
Thanks! It's fun to connect with other families! 💖 So sweet of you to notice.
I drool over her curriculum but the price of her digitals are far far more than I can afford!
It’s true that a lot of what she has is pricy. I can understand being on a budget!
School during naps doesn’t work for us either! Thanks for saying this! Now I’m off to go purchase a bell!! I also have 3 boys! 7, 5, 10 mos (super mobile! Can’t stand being contained!) and currently expecting! I’m so nervous for the next 2-3 years of schooling thinking through how tough it will be with a newborn and toddler!
I hear you! It is hard to plan ahead for all the what-ifs! It is tough, but very worth it. You’ll find what works for your crew, and look back and forget exactly how hard it all was.
Thank you for all this info! Im new to homeschooling, like so new that I'm trying to find what curriculum!!!! This is great info!
Welcome to homeschooling! I hope you find a curriculum that's a great fit for your family!
I appreciate your video! I have been teaching traditional homeschooling for 3 years now and I gradually want to make a swift to Charlotte Mason on specific subjects like history. I discovered BOC but have no clue how to create one since I am on a very tight budget. Is it possible if you can make an in depth video on how to exactly label pages etc. I would greatly appreciate it! TYIA! 😊 GOD BLESS!
It is definitely possible to create a Book of Centuries on a budget! I’ll try and see about a video like that.
CMEC mom here, second year with them, and i definitely recommended them even if you're not a purist like me. Thank you for your time.
It is always encouraging to hear from other families who are also choosing a CM approach! Thanks for weighing in with your experience.
How does the world history in this work? I see it in the plans, but can’t find any you tube videos on that part. Everyone only talks about the American history part of it. I am so confused by the world history part lol
Hi Sarah, there is exactly a world history strand in a CM education. It happens, but in a unique way. In grad 4, students begin to study a “sister country” to their own. This is a country where their own history is very intertwined, and often dependent upon one another. For US students, England makes the most sense. In Grade 5, students also add in Ancient history. They begin learning about Mesopotamia, Egypt, then into Asia, Africa, etc over time. In Grade 5, students are doing US, a sister country, and Ancient all at once. Then, they often swap in other countries for the sister country once very familiar with the sister country’s full history.
What are your thoughts on SCM Arithmetic vs. Beauty & Truth now that you've used B&T for a while now? We've used Math With Confidence for K-2nd are are about a quarter of the way through 3rd, but it's never been a great fit and feel we really need to make a change. I'm researching Math U See, SCM Arithmetic, and B&T Math. I would love to hear any advice you may have!
Sadly, I’m at a math crux. I’m just not sure we’ve found our great fit. My eldest is too advanced to fit into the SCM Arithmetic. He is ahead of their production levels. So we had to switch out of it. I never loved B&T due to having to print it and then sort of gather up everything and another book and go back and forth to videos. If all my kids could use it, I’d choose SCM.
This is going to be a random question, lol. But, I love the bookshelves you have in the background. Do you mind telling me where you purchased them>
They are “cubbies” from the Better Home and Garden brand at Walmart.
This video was great and informative. I am interested in Alveary, and your videos so far have been very helpful. Also, I wanted to recommend Jady A's Elemental Phonics program. There are three levels. It's so simple for busy moms. At first, I thought this was too easy for me to teach. Will it really work? And yes! My son is very active, so the length of the lessons really helped.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll check it out.
Can I ask--how have you liked the community read-alouds referenced? (Understandably, I can't access book lists for those, but I am curious if you've found that a lot of the titles have been repeats from AGF.)
There are so many of them listed, that it’s not been an issue of finding one that wasn’t a repeat.
I was so interested in your video about how you switched from AGF to The Alveary--it surprised me, but the more I watched your video, the more I agreed with what brought you to make the change. I also need/love refreshment in our homeschool, and while I love AGF, it's been hard going back around to Cycle 1 again with most of the material being repeat for me as mom. :) Thanks for making this updated video on how it's going!
Thanks for commenting. I found it hard to jump ship because we truly enjoyed AGF. Hope you find your stride again.
Hello! Do you have the link to your alphabet card swirl stand??
I got it at Hobby Lobby 15 years ago.
My daughter is 11 and my only homeschooler. Would Peaceful Press be a good fit for 1 child?
You bet! It is totally manageable and fun with a single student.
We have the same type of schedule and I’m super interested in those agendas you made for your kids. I don’t see the link to that video. I honestly never thought of scheduling our weeks as days 1-4 instead of Mon-Fri. We also do a 4 day week but complete in 3 days. I’ll definitely be rethinking my planner going forward. We use AGF so it’s pretty easy to manipulate the schedule and combine kids. Thanks for the ideas!
It is a lot easier to adjust the days rather than specific days of the week! 💕 Maybe this video would help? ua-cam.com/video/ZFLO-pDN6FY/v-deo.htmlsi=L_Ply09bZMdcm5am
Do you don’t have to have a GED or high school diploma to home school in ga ?
One parent must have a GED or High School diploma.
This is one area my husband and I don't fully agree. We walk a balance, between the fairy tale world. For example some of the Blue Fairy Book is ok with him and Grimm's etc aka classic fables and fairy tales, but Narnia is a hard no for him. I respect my husband so, even though I see so much goodness in Narnia, LOTR, and many other fairy tales, I don't read those one's with my children.
I concur that we should always seek peace in our homes and honor what our husband is comfortable with. 💕
If fairy tales were wrong why did Jesus teach with parables?
That’s a great way to discuss this topic with others.
This was so fun to watch, we use the Alveary also, I have two Form 1 students and some littles. It's our 3rd year using it. I appreciate you sharing how you are using the Alveary for your family. It's not a super common CM curriculum yet so every time I see content about it I get really excited. Your morning combined subject list is actually very similar to ours. I like the idea of having the list visible for them to bring their own books to the table. I decided to get Syllabird this year also and I love paper too but Syllabird is saving me so much time it is well worth the investment. We have a small home for the size of our family so I am trying to be mindful of storage and the flow of supplies and books from the table and back to the living room where they are stored. I look forward to more videos from you :] subscribed
Hello and welcome! I hope that whatever I share continues to be encouraging and helpful! It’s always awesome to connect with other families using the same curriculum.
