Have you ever thought about who am I really, where am I going, why don't I have a better grip on things. Seems like there's always so much to learn and you feel like you'll never learn it all? A very poignant performance of my song by Terry Tufts.

    Many thanks for a such a good look at Perth's past - and parts and events - from someone who's new to this area. It's a fascinating story of setting up a town in the "middle of nowhere" with such interesting water connections (and problems) and pioneering people. The story of the whole Rideau lands is fascinating!

  • @InDustWeTrust19
    @InDustWeTrust19 4 місяці тому

    I come from Ferriers (Abraham Ferrier 1807-1879 and was one of the original pioneers that were sent to survey the land north of rideau and was one of the people who after surveying that area drafted a letter to the lieutenant-Governer of Upper Canada, Sir Francis Gore asking to settle bay of quinte instead but that request was denied! And they were sent to settle the land north of Rideau) and McNaughtons (Duncan sr first and then Duncan jr, who had one of the original Mcnaughton farms on Mcnaughton shores. The hamlet of Tennyson was born on a corner of his property and he and his brother john were the first to settle there). Have a book that was my great grandfather Ira Duncan Mcnaughtons called The Pioneer History of Lanark County. Its so cool seeing family names in there and reading about their journey. Planning a trip to Perth now that theres even more to see for me history-wise❤ a very, very beautiful place so rich in history

      That’s so interesting. There was Stu/Stewart Ferrier and family and Duncan’s living in Perth when I lived there in the 1950 and 60’s. They were close friends of our family. I can only assume they were related to your ancestors as well.

    Very informative and nostalgic history of Perth over the last 200 years! My dad owned Grainger Motor Service first on Craig street next to the Last Duel park and finally Gore Street next to our home. Denny Marks and John McGenty spoke about the numerous service stations in the 1960’s but Dad built his business on auto and truck repairs and not so much on gas and oil. It was a wonderful town to raise a family with generous and friendly neighbors. Even though many will move on in later life I hope Perth continues to attract young people to do the same. Shout out to my high school friend Richard Schooley who continues to work and support the GWM hospital and Algonquin campus in Perth!❤

      Thank you for your comment. You raise such a good point. By far most of the rank and file soldiers and sailors weren't truly enemies, they were just doing their duty to their country. For example a Canadian farmer and a German farmer caught up in the whole thing would have no reason to hate one another. I suppose it will never happen, but wouldn't it be great if some day war becomes obsolete?

    There is another piece of history not covered in this video that needs to be told. CPO Max Bernays was in the wheelhouse beneath the bridge conning the ship at the time of the engagement. He ordered everyone out of the wheelhouse when the fire broke out and stayed behind to man the telegraph, engine order indicators and Helm. In the 35 minutes the battle raged, he answered more than130 orders from the bridge by himself. It is normally a three man job, but Max handled them all and should have won the VC for his refusal to abandon his post in spite of the threat to his life. He survived the war and died after a long career as a naval reservist on March 30th, 1974 a the age of 64.

    This is fascinating to me. My great great grandfather Michael Lacey Cahill was a private in the British 19th Dragoons. He came with his family from Ireland to Perth in 1817 on a military land grant. By 1824 their crops had been consumed by grasshoppers, and they moved to Huntington Twp Carleton county (Ottawa) to the area of Shirley's Bay. Michael's wife Anne Shirley had a brother living there. Subsequently they moved to l'ile du Grand Calumet (Calumet Island) 60 miles up the Ottawa River where they settled permanently. For the next 200 years Cahills farmed on Calumet Island, near the village of Dunraven.

    Thanks, Rob for your excellent video showing the story of HMCS Assiniboine and U-210. Vice-Admiral Ralph Hennessy and Hellmut Liebold are welcomed contributors for sharing their history, and Mrs. Diana Hennessy and Mark Wunderlich are to be congratulated for helping to make this complete. This story is one I am familiar with. The deceased 18 year old sailor OS Kenneth Watson was a shipmate and friend of my then 19 years old father OS Jim Hart RCNVR (seen on the left in the foreground as part of Ken’s burial at sea honour guard). Dad went on, after a five year hiatus following the war and re-enlisting in 1950, to be buffer of HMCS Ontario, Cox’n of other vessels, sailing on the Cordova, Beacon Hill, CPO of Restigouche training division at Cornwallis, and much more, and then having married one of the earliest group of Wrens (WRCNS began Oct.1942) who also saw duty in Halifax (where they met) during WWII, later supporting two boys (my having gone to school named after John Stubbs), my brother and me in sea cadets, and seeing myself in the RCNR (‘64 - ‘71) with HMCS Swansea, HMCS Crescent, HMCS Oriole, tug HMCS St. Charles, and other ships. We both ended our careers on HMCS Mackenzie with my dad being Chief Warrant Officer, and myself Leading Seaman/Corporal. The Assiniboine was a cherished lady in our home, and were it not for the success of the ship and her crew I would not be here to add to your story. Thanks, again Rob. Well done.

      Hi Vern Thanks for the heads up. I retired last fall, but if you have any other questions or would like a copy of the DVD please let me know. In the meantime I have some updating work for that info on UA-cam. Regards, Rob Newton.
