I had someone mention this to me before also, and had a similar thought when I started playing myself, but the term Jews harp is used colloquially all around the world. The instrument isn't related to Judaism, nor harps, but the term is old, and may stem from "jaws harp", "juice harp", or from the french word jeu. Some people prefer to say mouth harp, or by their traditional names.
