Oak and Olive
Приєднався 1 гру 2021
Welcome to Oak and Olive, the place where we share our experiences of trying to build a new life in Central Portugal. After years of living a conventional life, we've saved up enough money to take a leap of faith and move to an old abandoned farm with our baby. Over the next few years we'll put our dreams to the test. We'll share all the details of the highs and lows with you here and hopefully we can learn about sustainability, nature, happiness and more.

Huge Harvest! // July (No-Dig) Garden Tour
We're slowly working our way towards our goal of never having to buy a vegetable again. We have a 50m² fenced do-dig garden that we have talked about a lot, and now we can finally truly harvest the fruits of our labour.
We are Zak and Jackie and together with our child we live in the mountains of Central Portugal. In 2019 we found ourselves buying 2 hectares of abandoned land and a house, and we finally made the move in 2022. Follow us on our journey of rehabilitating former Eucalyptus plantation land, building a house and a life in a new country.

Self-Sufficiency: Meat Rabbits in the Garden

We’re talking about using a rabbit tractor, how we raised and then butchered our meat rabbits and how we process our kiwis. Some clarification on the PFAS situation: We're not crazy concerned about exposure. We use Gore-Tex raincoats and other materials. We do try to avoid them when they come either in contact with heat or the mouth. This is the Podcast I'm talking about in the video: www.thegu...

How Do We Afford This? // COST OF LIVING In Rural Portugal & Garden Update

We break down our finances, so you can see what the monthly cost of living in Portugal looks like. We did have savings (about 25k) when we arrived here almost two years ago, but most of that has been spent on equipment, building supplies, car repairs and life in general. So now we just live with what we receive monthly and we're still doing really well :) We are Zak and Jackie and together with...

Portugal is probably not the safest bet when it comes to the future, but it was a bet within our budget. This place might burn down, but we're working hard to reduce this risk. P.S. while we did travel quite a bit and blew a few tons of carbon into the atmosphere (we mostly walked, hitchhiked and cycled, but there were a few flights), we have since changed quite a bit. Nothing compared to the a...

You inspire me to get out and forage 😊
What’s your opinion on the overall safety of living or traveling in rural Portugal?
Overall? Very, very safe. During the summer, basic fire safety and awareness is an absolute must, but this is not something that keeps you from enjoying everything that this country has to offer :)
Great video congratulations. Unfortunately my experience is that Portuguese people have on average no interest in changing this situation. Maybe I am wrong but this is my feeling leaving there. One question. Does anyone knows any organisation in Portugal or Spain that fights against this issue?
I hope next months will be better for you guys 😊
Awesome garden, you became a master!
How lovely to see you and your beautiful garden! Good to see all the progress and to see you recover from the horrible sheep tragedy. Much love from Josh, who is having a proud small vegetable patch this year.
Thank you so much! I finally started working on the wool blanket for our son, thank you so much for the advice back then, saves me some work 😅
Yay for the gem corn 🥳 Was that yellow courgette from seeds I sent you, or a different variety?
I think it might have been from you so I can confirm your observations 😂😂
the first time i bought chicken manure i didn't realize how high in nitrogen it was. it burned the hell out of my plum tree, it dropped all blossoms and didn't produce anything that year; the next year it was super healthy and strong though! i put a good helping of the chicken manure in the holes that i planted my tomatoes in as i did with steer manure in previous years... the tomatoes did not suffer at all, and were the best fruits i had ever grown!! :D so, if you have chickens... ;)
I’m always overly cautious with manure because I’ve heard so many stories about the roots getting burned 😅😅 but definitely excited to get manure again!
Good to see you again. Glad you’re getting such a bounty from your garden. Learning all the time.
Two of our sheep passed away in May. At the same time, we also had to scrap our car after it fell into a lake. The expense of buying another car forced us to make an entirely new budget and find more work to bring in extra money. We are doing well and rebuilding our savings again. A part of the solution was finding a new home for our remaining goat, as the medical expenses for the animals were piling up and the cost of buying new sheep off-set any savings that we could have made from the milk and cheese that we were looking forward to. We want to get sheep and goats again in the future, but plan to build more permanent fencing first.
Hello family! You are progressing so much! What hapenned to the sheep? Lots of love from Spain!
Two of our sheep passed away. Around that time, our car fell into a lake, and we had to buy a new one. We had planned on making cheese and milk from our sheep to save money from our food budget, but the cost of new sheep and medical expenses to take care of them suddenly became much larger than the amount of money that we spend each year on milk and cheese, so we decided to rehome the remaining animal and focus our energy on making more money and preparing to get sheep and goats again in the future. Paying for another car was also a major factor in our decision to change the way we run the farm and find more work away from the property.
The garden is looking so good!! Congrats!🧡🧡
Thank you ❤️❤️
using the land for free is not owning the land for free...
True, but we're not suggesting that we own it. We're pointing out the fact that there is lots of land available and some of it can augment what we already have, for free. Thanks for watching!
Very informative vlog, thanks for sharing.
I really appreciate your insights on Portugal. I am very attached to this beautiful country and its generous and loving people. One day i hope to return and live there again.
r u trying to reach for more subscribers or just fancied doing something a wee bit different? 🙂
Quite a few German speakers requested a video in German. We're thinking of trying one in Portuguese but that would be much harder.
@@oakolive yep that would be really hard, lol.
So nice to see you guys again! The German is surprisingly cool! I really enjoyed it, it's such a fun soundimg language! The ceramic shards in the patio and the wall are such a lovely gesture, looks beautiful ❤️❤️ The wall is also looking really great!! Keep it up, excited to see it all finished, I'm sure it's going to look gorgeous!!
To (re) build a stone house, to stack hay, to save on costs hay... even if you dont count your work as value time worth of money, it will still cost thousands...maybe im missing something. Hope you suceed.
I (Zak) don't count my time as money because I wouldn't make any money if I was doing a different job on the farm. It is a very small structure and we already have the stones and tools for the job, and tiles for the roof. We just need to buy sand, lime, and some wood for the floor and ceiling. Still, it will probably take me at least a year with all the other jobs.
@@oakolive its because most homesteaders dont count their time/work as money that many homesteads still exist. And its also the cause for most small homesteads around the world are being abandon... My guess is that it will still cost thousands, if its done right. Just the wood, nails and screws get in the thousand. Anyway, glad to see your progress.
We'll let you know how it goes 🙂 we successfully built and rendered an extra wall on the house with a second hand window for less then 400 euro. Aside from the window, the screws and the wood were probably the most expensive thing.
Nuce to have you back- i enjoyed the german with subtitles
"Astetics don't matter" ist eine Top- Übersetzung für "mir isch des Wurscht" :D I Like.

Wow, it's a real improvement! I love the pieces of dinnerware in the wall. ❤
Thank you so much! I hope to continue it in other parts as well if we have some more broken ones ☺️

I just don’t get it. No effort or what so ever to build a good shelter for your pigs! Pigs like straw to sleep in, have an enclosed shelter especially in the winter time. Your chickens are living on 2x2m, the chicken house looks like it will break any second! No additional food for the pigs? That’s shows you have no education when it comes to animals.
Do you have an opportunity to talk to the local farmers for advice on growing grains & other crops. Your garden is really flourishing this year.~Keep up the good work👩🌾🐌🌱🐑☀️❣️
Certainly, the local people who grow grains (mainly corn) use small tractors to prepare the land first. We would love to own one of those machines one day to help us move things around, but we're trying to learn how to grow grains in tight little corners and edges, which I don't see people doing. It's a steep learning curve but we're making progress 🙂
Such a great piece of land for agriculture,if one owns 2 acres of land, you would never visit the grocery story
Another problem is criminal activity most of these fires are started by humans and they go unpunished. Ecological crimes arent taken seriously
Northwestern portugal used to be home of temeprate rainforests
The answer to your qestion in my opinion is that we now have a generation of work shy youth that want the easy life. They are quite happy living on state handouts and complaining about their situation. always the victim mentality. Hope this helps
It doesn't seam rational that older generations have been blaming younger generations for society's problems going all the way back to ancient times... Surely human civilization would have stopped working ages ago. Here's a 2400 year old quote from Aristotle: “[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstances." Sounds kind of familiar to me. Soon, the youth of today will begin to condescend the next generation. I already see it beginning between the millennials and genZ. We we all forget (or pretend to forget) that we are also inadequate...
Amazing how practice makes better, not only a learning curve for you but for us viewers too thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Yes it is hard, and yes it should be hard. It gets easier, but killing anything grabs you by the stomach. I think you are doing it beautifully, if that's any help - probably not 😢
Definitely trying our best!
Basil central, let's GO
At least that is coming up this year!
Very nice
I've just subscribed your your channel. This is the 3rd video of yours I've watched. You've impressed me a lot because I'm portuguese, almost 64 years old, born in Africa but living here since 1976. I also feel a disgrace what is happening to this country demography. What a lost of knowledge. I love both the coastal / oceanic areas and the countryside. In Africa I used to fish and spear-hunt almost everyday after school and only twice I had to kill a chicken and a turkey. Just in Portugal at my in-laws' I've learnt how to kill rabbits and assure it's much easier than birds. I don't know how is your level of Portuguese language, but there's a recipe called "Coelho à caçador" you should try and you don't need to process so much the rabbit, the axe is enough to chop it..."Coelho à caçador" = "Rabbit at the hunter's way". Cheers
Thank you so much for your comment! The rabbits were definitely so much easier than chickens and we’ll get some new ones soon. We do speak Portuguese in our daily life & the recipe looks like the perfect winter meal, thank you for pointing us that way!
You're welcome@@oakolive
The banana and kiwi jam isn't something I've seen. Interesting. I'm glad I don't eat meat, the whole process is awful.
It tastes delicious! And yeah, it took us a while to decide if we want to eat animals again, it’s not the easiest process.
Hire you to look around for me. Interesting to see irrigation system. One farm I saw I figured it out ... if cant you can divert water and always wind mills . Adapt new system easy enough . Plastic pipe. Any way... I give gas money travel expenses as private search... lol. Donate for a few answers.
Lovely to see you guys are doing well in Portugal best of luck and keep post this lovely videos thank you guys
O amendoim é uma cultura de verão. Sementeira em Março/Abril.
Lovely video! The teams noises gave me anxiety though, took me a while to realize it was in the video haha.
I hear that noise in my sleep at this point 😅
The rabbit looks great! Definitely want to do that in the future, although I'm not looking forward to explaining that to the kids 🥲. The risk of botulism is only with non-acidic foods like vegetables, kiwis and other fruit are fine especially if you add sugar
Yeah that’ll be a bit harder as they get older. It was really important to us that there was no “pet” connection with the rabbits. To toddler, they were just there and then they weren’t. He had very little interaction with them.
Incidentally, kiwifruit is high in pectin, especially when it’s not quite ripe/ a bit firm. It’s an amazing fruit, extremely high in nutrients ( twice that of apples per 100g): plus which, per 100g has double the amount of vitamin C as an orange. Also high in Vitamins A, B1,B2, B3, E; also high in Calcium, iron, potassium…. The list goes on.
I peel, slice and dry my Kiwi fruit, it then keeps for literally months. I don't know exactly how long, because I always eat it ....
It feels good to get advice from someone with kiwi in their title! With the next batch, we’ll probably experiment with drying them over our wood stove, thanks for the tip :)
Homesteading is about survival and food management anything that keeps alive till the next meal is a blessing. you should breed them they are easy ,and they grow so quick ,protein supply all year round. thanks for sharing.
That’s the plan! We wanted to see first how we would feel about them and are totally convinced now. More rabbits to come in the near future :)
Do you think raising your own meat gets easier? My partner and I were both former vegetarians, even vegan for a little while. He has gotten used to killing animals, but i just can't bring myself to do it (unless the animal is already injured). We get a friend to help on trade because she's comfortable using the 'broomstick method'... I told her i need to learn but I really don't wanna 😪
We are also former vegetarians/vegans. It definitely does get easier. The first time with any animal is probably the hardest. It's already gotten easier with chickens, we're sure that rabbits will be easier next time. We do it too infrequently to get 100% used to it...
Sustainability is not found in Petrochemical being in your Food. Not even Plastic Wrap. Micro plastics clog up ocean fish guts? What about humans?. So. Glass, iron, steel, copper are excellent options. Investment for Life. Do not store any Food in Plastics.
You are very hard on yourselves with the slaughtering. I admire the sentiment, but if it is affecting you so deeply, you can just try buying from an ethical, humane source. I think sometimes all this (and with the PFAS) shows how hard it is to be healthy and sustainable as individuals.
Thank you for your comment! As former vegetarians, it is very important to us that we raised and killed the animals ourselves. If we can’t kill it, we can’t eat it. This way, we hold ourselves accountable and don’t overindulge in such a precious resource
@@oakolive Yes you said that in a previous video. And obviously, we all ought to know how our meals are obtained and experience it first hand. I am also just aware of how hard it is to be truly accountable.
You can preserve lemons, they are fantastic!
We actually made a ton of lemon curd the other day! Working on preserving a lot for the hot summer days :D do you have a favourite recipe? I love to try out new stuff!
Pickled lemons are easy and fabulous
