Not me only now seeing I misspelled “anticipated reads.” I was so excited to finally set up a reading journal for the new year. Plutarch was a Greek who lived in Rome for 10 years and later became a Roman citizen. He wrote in Greek and spent most of his life in Greece. Parallel Lives was written to analyze and compare the characteristics of famous Greeks and Romans who had similar life paths.
The one book of Wilkie Collins that I read in the 1980s, which I love, and no one talks about is The Black Robe. How crazy is that? Soar high Jenny, I love your videos, such an intelligence, amazing young woman.
The one book of Wikie Collins I read in my twentues but that stayed with me ever sincecwas The Black Robe. Some might find it dry, as it deals with the Catholic faith and a wealthy older man on his deathbed being persuaded to take back his faith and thus leave his inheritance to the church, I loved the story very much. So much intrigue, 30 years on, it is still with me.
I'd probably never have discovered Consolations and Confessions if not for this upload.
Wow, never heard of Varney the Vampire! Sounds like Barnabas the Vampire of DARK SHADOWS fame (talk about meandering and long--1100-plus episodes). I recommend a modern long classic--Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. It's the longest novel I've read and was worth the investment of time and thought. I know the King James Bible is not a single book but a library unto itself, but certainly a classic (Penguin and Norton both published editions). Shakespeare fans it will find it a literary treat even if one isn't religious. Italian travelogue recommendation: George Gissing's "By the Ionian Sea." Great video, Jennifer!
A read Longfellow and I regret it so much 😂😂😂😂
I didn’t know her channel and I was doing more research on Dante as well and was watching some of her videos for over an hour now and I’m in shock I did not know until now 😮😔😔😔
I discovered Jennifer just before she passed away. Her presentations were so insightful and welcoming. She was far too young to be lost to us.
Great video and like you Great Expectations is my favorite. It was my first, read in high school, and it hooked me for life. I took a Dickens course in college way back in the early 1990s and most all of us loathed Hard Times, so your sinking feelings may prove true. Still remember Gradgrind. Ugh. This was dedicated to Carlyle, I believe, and was more social commentary than a story that had to be told. Thankfully, it's short. Oliver Twist is indeed worth finishing! David Copperfield is my second favorite. Sadly, not a big fan of ToTC. I will never read Drood knowing it has no ending, so I don't count that one. Enjoyed this a lot!
All of these are going to my tbr
I miss you 🎀
Boy do I miss this girl❤

Thank you for the recommendations! I'm expanding a collection of Gothic Poetry I did last year, and was looking to include more work by Shelley. My first edition included "The Cold Earth Slept Below" and "Ghasta", which are arguably predictable selections, and "Ozymandias", which would not be a conventional selection, but which "ticked off all the boxes" in the definition of "Gothic" that I had set forth. Do you think "Stanzas Written in Dejection, near Naples" would be appropriate? The pervasive daytime imagery would argue against it, but the spirit of dark lamentation and themes of mortality may, conversely, qualify the piece.
I am so saddened and in tears in learning this suddenly now. I just cannot believe it, and this news is so shocking and sad. She was so young, and this is tragic, tragic news. May there please, please be some peace in some other world. My thoughts and prayers and condolences. 🙏
Just happened to find the review about Moby Dick which I . Her way of introducing to read it is so beautiful and already enticing through her comments, at the end I read this sad announcement and I am totally shocked. So sorry to hear her loss, and I will miss her in a special way and will be thinking about her while reading Moby Dick. Forever young and pretty dear Jennifer, now as a Sleeping Beauty. Rest in peace.
What happened to her she looks so vibrant and healthy it must have been an accident
Wow this was fantastic ...God I miss this beautiful smart intelligent lady so much...I'm saving this video and reviewing all her videos for that matter...
Such a great vid! I am currently reading a mystery novel by Matthew Pearl called The Dante Club about Prof. Longfellow, Holmes, Lowel, and Fields who started a private club to translate Dante from Italian into English. Its a mystery novel because there is a murderer on the loose who is very familiar with Dante's work and commits murders that mimic the punishments found in Inferno. The detectives working the case ask the Dante Club for their help.
Only just joined based on her recommendations of versions of Dante. Sorry that I wasn't here earlier but I have loved Jennifer's You Tube broadcasts. As an avid lover of classic books it is wonderful to see Jennifer's love for them also.
I just came across your daughters channel through another book tuber. Jennifer has such a beautiful beautiful voice. My heart goes out to you and I'm hoping these videos of her bring you some comfort and joy as time goes on. She's looking out for you...😇
I just finished The Woman in White for Victober. I miss you much, rest in heaven 🩷
oh no! rest in peace, jennifer!
Love your channel! I find it very informative. Recently I came across a wonderful Victorian Era mystery novel by Matthew Pearl called The Dante Club ....thought I would share.
Plz no I love her dante video collections. She was the first one who encouraged me to read these large books now I like them so much. I just came across her channel to watch her again after so many months. God is evil, how can a precious person like her be no more. May her soul rest in peace. I really really loved her videos. I could fall asleep just by hearing a gentle voice like her when she talks so passionately about the books she reads! She was a huge inspiration for me. I would really miss you Jennifer. I might be a stranger, but the little connection we made through our common ground really holds a great place in my heart.
I can’t believe it. I am so heartbroken! Jennifer, you are missed. ❤
I’ve read The Count four times and will do so again. But, I’m currently reading Varney the Vampire, which will take some time.
Must everything be about having more women in the narrative? You have an obnoxious quantity of choice. If you don't like it, then find something else.
I started watching Jennifer in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. I regret that I was never able to tell her just how much she changed my life. She truly opened my eyes to so many books, and most of the books I read are due to her. It has been almost a year since her death and I miss her more and more everyday. I hate that it has taken me so long to write my condolences, but Pam, if you are still reading these comments, just know that Jennifer had an impact on every single person that watched her videos.
Same here. I regret never telling her how amazing her voice was for me. As a person with ADHD, her voice really calmed me down when I listened to her. She was a great booktuber!😭
Varney the Vampire does not quality to be in the list with these other great books, really!
I have been watching some of Jennifer’s videos about the poets this month and miss her videos so much. What is here is such an amazing resource. I hope Jennifer’s family are all doing ok
I’m in love with your channel! I have been reading through the classics over the pst couple years and it just felt right to start the divine comedy as we’re in peak spooky season right now. Little did I know how it would interweave the Bible, Virgil, homer and more that I’ve already read! I’m reading the Mendelbaum translation but the notes from Durling/Martinez which are fantastic. I did read Musa’s translation of Vita Nuova so that was my experience with him. I’m already telling this is going to be a book I reread many times in my life. But it’s difficult because I don’t have any bookish friends to discuss or read it with so I’m living vicariously through your videos. Thank you for posting and sharing your thoughts!
I've never heard of Varny the Vampire before, I'll definitely be checking that out, God willing. Thank you!
I love the lobster talk 😂 I’m from Maine and love lobster
Tip two: the Provo Great Books Club I lead is reading these life-pairs this fall: 1 Pericles, Fabius 2 Alcibiades, Coriolanus 3 Timoleon, Amelius Paulus 4 Aristeides, Marcus Cato 5 Pyrrhus, Caius Marius 6 Alexander, Caesar 7 Demosthenes, Cicero 8 Demetrius, Antony 9 Dion, Marcus Brutus If more time, we'd definitely do Lycurgus/Numa, Solon/Poplicola, and Phocion/Cato II, but the above is a representative core of the Lives.
Tip one: if you want to focus on the Caesar-era lives, it helps to read them alongside Tom Holland's Rubicon. Ms. Brooks is correct of course that the better way is to read them is by the Greek-Roman pairings.
Oh my.. I am so very, very sorry to hear this. I just discovered your daughter today and was so excited to subscribe and to watch more of her videos. She was clearly a brilliant and wise woman and a marvelous communicator. She has left a treasure so many will continue to enjoy and benefit from for years to come. Sending love and appreciation. <3
Also, great recommendations on how to approach this material. I definitely was looking up figures in Wikipedia after hearing or reading the sections about them.
I miss your videos Jen! I always go back to see your catalog!
Me too, there is so much knowledge and insightful perceptions on literary work and life in general. I would say she packed so much in her short life, that I am twice her age and feel such a child in comparison. She is an amazing soul. I feel privileged to continue to access her videos.
I wonder if Jennifer’s mother watches these videos when she’s missing her daughter. I didn’t ever know Jennifer other than UA-cam, but I frequently rewatch her videos to be soothed by her amazingness. I would loved to have been her friend in real life.
Many thanks! Great list! I definitely will add a few to my list to read along Dante. Your videos are just great. Many thanks for sharing! 😊
I miss you so much today. So I will listen to you about the books you bought, while I put together the books I will read this week 💌
About to start the Maude translation. Thanks for this
Rewatching during Victober 2024… I really miss Jennifer 😢
Oh how Victober is so different this year without you.😢 I am sitting here reading ( once again) The Woman In White and thinking of you. I just had to stop for a moment and come here to comment about it. If you read this Pam , you are often in my thoughts and hoping that you are doing ok. All my best, always.
I've just watched this video again, and once more Jennifer inspires me with her wicked sense of humour, and unique, good-natured personal delivery. Like so many of us, I miss her. If any of her family and friends ever read these comments, please know that you have my thoughts and my very best wishes.
As it is Victober again, Jennifer is on my mind. I revisit her videos and learn something every time I watch them. Jennifer was a beautiful, articulate and generous person whose love of books was contagious. Thank you for keeping her channel open.
Still worth considering are Cary's highly influential early 19th translation. It was a major influence on Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Byron and Blake among others. The Temple classics translation influenced T S Eliot deeply. Dorothy Sayers's translation is strongly grounded in the Medieval Christian ethos of the poem. Her elaborate end notes touching on the allegorical aspects are hard to beat.
I’m devastated and heartbroken… she was incredibly knowledgeable and I loved learning and listening to her… I’m so sorry
If you haven't read it yet, you should read the Amores by Ovid, they're so much fun
